🇵🇹 ENGINEERING STUDENT SARA MARIA FROM PORTUGAL APPRECIATES THE CLOSE CONNECTION TO THE BIOTECH COMPANIES DURING THE STUDIES

Sara Maria Gamito is on her last semester of the Bachelor of Engineering in Biotechnology and has already practical hands-on experience from international companies:

"I have recently completed my 6-month research internship at in Reykjavik. I had a wonderful experience, both with a project and exploring the country. During this time I gained valuable knowledge and grew in the fields of molecular and microbiology, while also making friendships that I hope will last a lifetime.

From my return to Denmark in August, I have started a new student assistant position at in the DD&IT - Digital and Tech team. I have been received incredibly well and am very excited to be part of the team. My work at Digital and Tech will mostly consist of data analysis and display in collaboration with different stakeholders inside Novo Nordisk.

Last but definitely not least, I have the absolute pleasure to announce that I will be doing my bachelor thesis in collaboration with Unibio Group Plc. I am thrilled to be working with such an amazing group of motivated and hard working people, who have also received me with open arms. My thesis is set to be finished in January, when I will also hopefully complete my Bachelor in Engineering in Biotechnology.

I look forward to this busy but definitely fulfilling chapter of my life."

Natália from Portugal 🇵🇹:
“When I started in high school, I realized how much I especially enjoy science; Mathematics📈, microbiology🧫, chemistry🧪 - and how it relates to each other, and the different ways you can combine them. I especially liked the laboratory🔬 practical courses”

The past 3½ year Natália has studied the Bachelor of Engineering in Biotechnology and finished in February. Shortly after se started working as a full-time Process Engineer in Novo Nordisk, right next to campus.

Natálias advice for students still considering their study path:
“I would advise students to keep an open mind regarding the city they are about to move to or live in. The same goes for the career opportunities, as there can be so many opportunities. When you study engineering, you really do have a lot of choices to pick from in Kalundborg. Perhaps you already come with a career choice in mind, which is great. However, try to look at this education as a toolbox and don’t be afraid to try a field, or job position you haven’t thought about before, as you can be surprised about how interesting many subjects can be.”

FIELD TRIP TO Fuglsang Kunstmuseum | Art Museum
INTERNATIONAL HONOURS DEGREE IN TEACHING

On Wednesday March 6th, all of the first-year international students with the subjects pedagogy/didactics and life education went on a field trip to Fuglsang Art Museum in Lolland, together with international visual art students.

The international visual arts students, worked with Christian Norberg-Schulz's Genius Loci theory, which is about discovering and experiencing the spirit of a place and how it affects us and our lives.

💡According to this theory, everything is connected:
places, our lives, thoughts and ideas as well as the art and architecture we create.

With a starting point in the Fuglsang Museum and the entire natural/cultural landscape that surrounds the museum, the art students investigated and experienced the place, using all their senses and with a phenomenological approach – the Fuglsang as an architectural design, and the artworks in the museum, were explored and analyzed.

In the museum, all students also experienced the art pedagogue Guri Skygge Andersen's tour with a focus on how reflections and feelings about identity are expressed in art in different ways. Alongside Guri's presentation, themes such as people, citizenship, culture and historical awareness were put into play in relation to the local artworks, which are essential elements in the subject of life education as well as art.

The students were all very engaged in the artworks inside as well as outside in the nature scenery and they taught each other how art works can be interpreted together in different ways.

The trip gave the students many good ideas for more Open School activities, which is a relevant subject area in their teacher education, and can be transferred to internships and their future work as teachers.

56 biotech students went job and internship hunting at this year’s Matchmaking event in Kalundborg where the companies were invited in on campus to do the interviews.

BIOTECH INTERN AT NOVO NORDISK
Meet Mommina, one of our great international students, who just finished her internship on 6th semester at Novo Nordisk working with AR in employee training:

“My primary role as an intern has been to support the development of training material using HoloLens’s. It has also meant being close to the manufacturing processes, where I have drawn on theory such as chemical unit operations, industrial fermentation, insulin production and purification, as well as microbiology learned at Absalon. I have experienced a direct line to the work environment from the practice focused learnings from Absalon, which makes a lot of sense,” Mommina explains.

GREAT NEWS IN THE BIOTECH CITY⤵️
In collaboration with Novo Nordisk and other business partners, Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU) is developing a part-time MSc programme in Biomanufacturing in Kalundborg. This is being realized through Kalundborg Symbiosis, which is a partnership between 14 public and private companies.

This is a fantastic opportunity for our bachelor of engineering graduates to continue their close collaboration with the industry from the bachelor studies.

EXPLORING ICELAND 🇮🇸
Internships? Exchange? Future students?

We continously try to improve our educational offers by (among other things) getting to know the minds of potential students, expectations and dreams for the future.

This also mean exploring for potential collaborators in finding exciting internships or exchange partners for students dreaming of combining their education with a semester abroad.

Last week our two heads of education at the engineering programs in Absalon therefore went to Iceland to learn about and explore:

💡Relevant companies in Iceland for future collaboration around internships abroad. We visited very interesting companies on this matter: Matís, Samey Robotics ehf and Alvotech.

💡Exchange of students for a semester now or in the future. Here we visited Háskólinn í Reykjavík (Reykjavik University) to hear about the engineering programs and see facilities.

We also visited Danmarks Ambassade i Island (the Danish Embassy) to hand in materials about our educations and not the least have a good talk about the important work with building a bridge for Icelanders to Danish educations.
