The most impressive groups of prehistoric caves in the world are located in Tasli n 'Azer on a vast plateau of 72000 sq.km. of SE Algeria in the Sahara Desert. An open natural museum with numerous prehistoric works of art on the rocks, from the early Neolithic era to the end of the last Ice Age, have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982. Most of the works (rock paintings and engraved figures), date back to 9000-10000 years ago and untilnow more than 15,000 engravings had been recognized. In the rock paintings we see women with almost modern dresses and headgear, warriors and shepherds with well-written faces and bodies, while in the paintings the animals dominate. They were discovered in 1933 and the area was named by the Tuareg people ‘nomad tribe’ "The plateau with the rivers". It believed that in the Neolithic era the Sahara landscape was green plains or even savannas, large trees, rivers, lakes and grazing animals and cypress and other forest trees. The archeological site has been designated a national park, a biosphere reserve (cypress) and has been included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites as the Tasili n 'Ager National Park.
At Adventure Algeria we organise tours from the Mediterranean coast to the deep south Sahara of Algeria, we cover the magnificent site of Tasili n’Ager and Djanet.
