The present simple form of "BE"

The present simple of the verb be has three forms:

I am.
He/She/It is.
We/You/They are.

"They" = people and things

We use "he" for a man, "she" for a woman, and "it" for a thing.

- He‘s a little boy.
- She‘s beautiful.
- I like this TV. It‘s very big.

We use they for people and for things.

- I love Sara and Jonas. They are my friends.
- I love these chairs. They are very beautiful.

Don’t forget the subject

We always need a subject before the verb.

- It is cold. (NOT Is cold.)
- Sally is a wonderful woman. (NOT Is a wonderful woman).

The Baby Learning Technique 👶🏽

When learning a language, I believe the best way is to learn like a new born baby.

When babies are learning, for the first 2 years, all they do is listen, listen, listen. It is entirely inputting the language and trying to comprehend it.

After a while, naturally, they attempt to talk. At first they make a lot of mistakes, in which the parents correct them, and slowly they get to the point where they rarely make any mistakes.

This is the baby learning technique.

Input Phase.
6-12 months (depending on the language difficulty) resist trying to speak or write, just listening and reading.

Output Phase.
Now you should have a good grasp of the language, it’s time for you to try practice speaking.

Find a few friends that speak your chosen language, or maybe you’re lucky enough to have relatives that speak it. Once you’ve reached the output stage, make a habit of actively trying to use the language, and don’t be afraid of making mistakes!

La técnica de aprendizaje del bebé 👶🏽

Cuando se aprende un idioma, creo que la mejor manera es aprender como un bebé recién nacido.

Cuando los bebés aprenden, durante los dos primeros años, lo único que hacen es escuchar, escuchar y escuchar. Es enteramente introducir el idioma y tratar de comprenderlo.

Al cabo de un tiempo, naturalmente, intentan hablar. Al principio cometen muchos errores, en los que los padres les corrigen, y poco a poco llegan a un punto en el que rara vez cometen más.

Busca algunos amigos que hablen el idioma que has elegido, o quizás tengas la suerte de tener familiares que lo hablen. Contar con un profesor que sea nativo parlante es una gran herramienta que puede corregirte y guiarte a un ritmo más rápido que el que tendrías normalmente.

Una vez que hayas llegado a la fase de salida, acostúmbrate a intentar utilizar activamente el idioma, ¡y no tengas miedo de cometer errores!

English Learning Tips for Beginners!

6 ideas to help beginners learn English faster:

1. Listen to English every day
Listen to English radio.
Watch English TV.
Go to English movies.

2. Make an English/ESL friend
Make up conversations.
Practice dialogues.
Use beginner textbooks.

3. Read English stories
Start with children's books.
Try ESL readers.
Read advertisements, signs and labels.

4. Write down new words
Start a notebook for new words.
Write words in alphabetical order (A, B, C).
Make example sentences.

5. Keep an English diary
Start with one sentence.
How do you feel?
How is the weather?
What did you do today?
Write another sentence tomorrow.

6. Visit an English-speaking country
Learn English more quickly.
Stay with an English family.
Hear native speakers talk.

Applications I use to supplement language learning:

1. Language Transfer (Free)
Listen to a tutor and a student go through lessons, and learn with them! Pause the lessons to give yourself time to think of the response... Say the answers out loud!

2. Smartcards+ (Free)
Tired of writing new flashcards and find it annoying carrying them around with you? Create your own flash card decks on your phone, categorize them and review them everywhere you go easily. The app also prioritizes the cards you struggle with so you see them more.

3. Pimsluer (Paid)
This is the only app I have paid for, and in my opinion worth every penny. There are 5 levels, each with 30 audio lessons lasting 30 minutes each. The lessons begin with a conversation (in which you do not understand), then for the following half an hour you simply listen and repeat, and by the end of the lesson you will understand everything!

Anytime I want to study a language, I use these 3 applications. Notice I called them supplements (to be used along side a structured learning routine with a school or private tutor).

10 ENGLISH IDIOMS / PHRASES!

Learning these typical English idioms and phrases, is a great way to show off your English level, and in turn will make you appear more fluent!

1. ‘The best of both worlds’ – means you can enjoy two different opportunities at the same time.
“By working part-time and looking after her kids two days a week she managed to get the best of both worlds.”

2. ‘Speak of the devil’ – this means that the person you’re just talking about actually appears at that moment.
“Hi Tom, speak of the devil, I was just telling Sara about your new car.”

3. ‘See eye to eye’ – this means agreeing with someone.
“They finally saw eye to eye on the business deal.”

4. ‘Once in a blue moon’ – an event that happens infrequently.
“I only go to the cinema once in a blue moon.”

5. ‘When pigs fly’ – something that will never happen.
“When pigs fly she’ll tidy up her room.”

6. ‘To cost an arm and a leg’– something is very expensive.
“Fuel these days costs and arm and a leg.”

7. ‘A piece of cake’– something is very easy.
“The English test was a piece of cake.”

8. ‘Let the cat out of the bag’ – to accidentally reveal a secret.
“I let the cat out of the bag about their wedding plans.”

9. ‘To feel under the weather’ – to not feel well.
“I’m really feeling under the weather today; I have a terrible cold.”

10. ‘To kill two birds with one stone’ – to solve two problems at once.
“By taking my dad on holiday, I killed two birds with one stone. I got to go away but also spend time with him.”
