Walking through time and design in Bilbao: A personal view Bilbao is a “bang for your time” city, successfully offering whatever a modern society needs since the last 700 years. Los Labs se pueden considerar una especie de talleres extendidos en el tiempo en los que una universidad o institución académica local colabora con una internacional para trabajar sobre un reto planteado por la ciudad de Bilbao. Los cuatro retos o ejes temáticos que se han planteado son: Hábitat Urbano, Ecosistemas Digitales, Patrimonio Cultural e Industrias Creativas en el Espacio Público. En los Labs, NO es necesario un registro previo.

Workshops are one of the most valued aspects of DRS conferences, providing a space for practical engagement and experimental sessions for conference participants to experience.

For Workshops will be held in three ways: in person, online, or in hybrid format.

Remember that Fringe Activities have a maximum number of participants and therefore, registration is mandatory.

has been designed to be a safe space, Covid-free, to ensure your safety all throughout the conference. Additionally, upon arrival, we will provide all DRS2022 participants with local contact and conference contacts in case of COVID-related emergencies.

These will allow for space between participants to each session. Most of the rooms do not have doors, so fresh air can circulate. We will make sure rooms are properly ventilated between sessions.

Most of the meals will come with a lunch box that you will be able to take away to enjoy your lunch either on the terrace’s lawn or the nearby river banks and park. Each event takes place in a different venue, all of them are large open spaces with good ventilation.

Fun fact: Did you know that Norman Foster designed Bilbao's metro () system?

Sir Norman Foster resorted to “cave architecture”, emphasizing the originality, simplicity and efficiency, making it perfect example of the result of engineering and architecture when they work together, looking for convenience for the user.

One of its most renowned details is its glass canopies entrances known as ‘Fosteritos’ in reference to its designer. Its shape is reminiscent of slanted movement and is generated by the profile of the escalator tunnels as they rise to the level of the pavement. They receive natural light during the day and light up at night, forming welcome beacons in the urban landscape.

From 28 June to 3rd July, Bilbao will host 'BIlboko Kalealdia', the 23rd edition of the theatrical and street art festival. Over 58 performances by international and local companies will be performed in different emblematic spots of the city.

If you are traveling to Bilbao from another country, you are probably looking for information related to the COVID situation here, and the requirements to enter Spain.

- 𝗩𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲: Currently, the Basque Country has a vaccination rate of 93.5% among adults and 60.3% among children. Antigen tests can be easily purchased in any pharmacy at the government regulated cost of around 5 euros.

- 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝗸𝘀 𝘂𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲: In general, masks are still mandatory on public transport and recommended in any case where social distancing cannot be kept. No other limitations are currently in place: public events are taking place regularly indoors and outdoors, without any capacity limit. 𝗛𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱
María is an associate professor of architecture at New Jersey Institute of Technology. Prior to NJIT, she taught at Madrid School of Architecture Etsam (her alma mater) for 15 years, and at Cornell University from 2011 to 2013.

She is author of “Clinical, an architecture of variation with repetition”, published by Actar publishers. A clinical study of a trilogy of health-care centers built by entresitio in Madrid, Spain. She was awarded the Spanish academy Rome prize for architecture in 1996.

estudio__entresitio is a Madrid-NY based practice that is invested in the material actualization of the architectural concept. The practice has extensive building experience with an emphasis on public work that utilizes novel solutions for what is functional and necessary without sacrificing creativity or exploration. A large number of international awards and recognitions for projects, and especially for built work, speak to the attention that entresitio's work gives to spatial thinking and tectonics.
