In 1990 I was riddled with self-doubt, religious anxiety, and exhausted by years of questioning myself and God about the nature of who and what I was. Instead of Google we had libraries, and radios, and if you were a preacher's kid like me, you also had church. The search for answers to tough questions wasn't quite so easy as it is today. 1990 was the year George Michael released Freedom, a timeless anthem with a message of liberation to all of us caged birds out there, wondering if we'd ever be free. For those of us who identified as a mistake (or in my case . . . an abomination), just to hear that "some mistakes were built to last" was the kick up the arse I needed to start the process of understanding and loving myself for exactly what I was. If I was a mistake, I was going to be the most fabulous, loveable mistake God ever made . . . except of course, we all know God doesn't make mistakes. So . . .
So yeah, this release is personal. Even though I didn't write it, it's a song that helped to write ME. It's a page from one of the greatest songbooks left to us by one of our greatest teachers. It will be six months tomorrow since my beautiful mom passed on to a higher place, and to honour her I thought I would share this letter I recently found that she had written to me in 1997. I think her words say everything and more than anything I could say. Love Is In The Air was her favourite song. It's not hard to imagine why. ♥

Al Green’s 1974 classic ‘Take Me to the River’ was once described as “a light, easy, late-night sound, in which the strings, the horns, the organ, the guitars and that wild-honey voice blend into a single swinging, winning thing.” Revival have headed back to the banks of that infamous river to take you on a late-night adventure that is definitely swinging, but perhaps not quite so lightly or easily as Green’s original did. However, the mighty & fierce Mary Pearce adds plenty of her own wild honey into the mix. Throw in the GEO Gospel Choir and a sax solo from Ibiza’s beloved Lovely Laura and suddenly Revival have you on a wild rapids ride down a river that’s perhaps too dangerous for swimming. But on a dance floor it’s sure to be winning!

I am so pleased to see how quickly people have responded to the GoFundMe campaign to offer support for Kathy Brown as she battles stage 4 cancer in her lungs and brain. Nearly $20K has already been raised from 403 donations. And with REVIVAL RECORDS pledge to match donations up to 10K, that means we’re already at $30K in just under a week!! I spoke to Kathy a couple days ago and she is overwhelmed by the love and support that is pouring in from around the world. Let’s keep it going and reach that desired goal of $50K by next week!!! There are a lot of smaller donations of 10 & 20 dollars which is how we’ve managed to get where we are so even if you can only spare a fiver at this point, it all makes a big difference in the end. Kathy Brown is a dear friend, a beloved colleague, and a living legend in my industry of dance music. I know first-hand what it’s like to make a living from performing LIVE, and even with club hits and regular bookings most of us are not financially in a position to just stop working and pay for all the enormous extra costs that come with having cancer. (Kathy is in the US remember!) I’ve seen the dance community rally around its own many times to great effect over the years, and I believe we can do it again now for our divinely talented sister, the one and only Kathy Brown. REVIVAL RECORDS has pledged to match contributions up to $10,000. After years of watching Jools Holland on TV, and seeing his show break so many huge artists (Amy Winehouse, Adele, etc) it was a little surreal to have the honour of working with him on Revival Records’ new single, Brighter Days. I expected him to be the consummate professional, but I never imagined he’d be so incredibly friendly, down to earth, and generous with his time, talent and spirit. He is undoubtedly one of the nicest people I have ever met, not just in show business but in general. Revival presents Brighter Days (Emeli Sandé feat. Jools Holland & GeO Gospel Choir) - OUT NOW!!
Admittedly when I sat down with Emeli Sandé to record this podcast, I was a little nervous. And I remember thinking to myself that it felt good to be a little nervous. By then I’d listened to a lot of her music as part of my homework, and was awe-struck by the poetry in her lyrics. (And yes, they are HER lyrics!) Some people idolise great athletes, or feel intimidated by famous actors. Others reserve their deepest admiration for brilliant scientists, painters, architects, fashion designers, etc. For me . . . it’s writers. Always has been. Maya Angelou, Walt Whitman, Nina Simone, James Baldwin, Shakespeare, Gabriel García Márquez, *Cole Porter*, Toni Morisson, etc etc. And Emeli Sandé is one of ‘those’ anointed with the super power of being able to transport us with words and phrases, to the places and faces that don’t even exist until someone shows you a portal and shares the passcode. So, yeah. Of course I was nervous. Writers are my rockstars and poets are my prophets. But I totally nailed it anyway 😂 and now we’re besties so . . .
