The María Luisa Park has its origin in 1849, when Antonio de Orleans, Duke of Montpensier and his wife, Infanta María Luisa Fernanda de Borbón, acquired the included San Telmo Palace and its gardens and turned it into their residence. They commissioned Lecolant, a French gardener, to design a colossal garden in the style of the building. This gardener designed it according to the English and French fashion, which was in vogue at that time.

When the duke died, his widow donated practically all of these gardens. In this way they remained abandoned until they were renovated with the 1929 Exhibition that gave María Luisa Park the majesty that it maintains today. The French architect Forestier was in charge of this. He transformed what were palatial gardens into a beautiful public park with monumental and recreational spaces. Although it has years of history, it was considered public in the spring of 1914, when it was freely accessible for the first time.
