Designers and advertisers often create playful illusions meant to create brand awareness simply by causing viewers to do a double take and ask, “What am I looking at?”The key to this kind of clever design is not to force it. The imagery needs to integrate seamlessly with the overall message or goal. When used sparingly and in the right context, visual deception can be a really unique way to set your brand apart.

GETTING A PRINT QUOTATION
The number of printed items you want to end up with can alter the cost of your job enormously. Traditional litho printing has a lot of up-front setup costs and these factor into the price whether you have 10 or 10,000. Unit costs can come down dramatically as your quantities increase because the printer just needs to keep on running. For example, the price between 500 and 1000 may not be that great, depending on other factors such as finishing. Sometimes, like-for-like pricing may not be so like-for-like when you weight up the specifications of the job. That's why we always like to chat to people and advise in a friendly 'plain' way. So, if you are looking to get a print price, just let us know what you need and what you need it for and we will provide a competitive quote. - [email protected]

There is little doubt that without the effectiveness of a well-printed document, whether it is a flyer, business card or brochure, advertising and promotion would have little impact on your business. Flyer printing has to be attractive, eye-catching and free of any waffle. Flyer Printing - If you have already made a decision that you need to inform the world about your product, or the local community about an event you are holding, you’ll no doubt be thinking about producing a flyer. Flyer printing involves more than just lots of pictures and headlines about a third off a product. It needs to make use of the available space there will be on the flyer. Effective flyer printing means one must realize that there is only a certain amount of room to work with. Most flyers are printed on A5 paper size and providing you have the right design and everything spaced exactly where it should be. You could make use of the limited space by employing a graphic designer or you could just try and go for it yourself. Equally important is the world of printing is to design and print an effective business card. A business card printing service is something you may want to consider as this card will be your gateway to potential clients and new customers. A badly designed or poorly printed business card can put customers off and send them elsewhere with their business. Adversely an effective well-printed business card shows potential clients you professionalism, style and business acumen. It really is a case of first impressions counting and all that. Brochure Printing - What are the fundamentals of printing an effective brochure? A brochure will showcase your business and advertise to the outside world what you can do for your clients. A good brochure is often a standard requirement in the travel industry, luxury product industry and the clothing and textile sectors too. Effective brochure printing involves sitting down and working out with colleagues what will be included and where. Little things like the size of the images, the font set and the style of print are all important. Get these little key things wrong and you could find your customers may be put off by a shoddy design.Brochure printing services can advise companies on the best layout and the most effective way to grab the attention of the reader. The Printing Process - Sheet Offset Press - English

OFFSET PRINTING EXPLAINED and why anything over 5,000, offset printing is definitely cheaper! Offset printing uses wet ink need drying time before binding, cutting or folding to avoid smudging or ‘offsetting’ the print. This is more suited to larger scale print runs with a flexible timeframe. Because the bulk of the cost involved in offset printing is in set up rather than materials, you can benefit from economies of scale if you print enough copies. Print Mallorca can print from 10 to 30 thousand copies per hour with our offset printers, 5 to 10 times the speed of a digital printer. Once the job is set up, it can be completed much quicker than with a digital printer. However, offset printers typically print 16 pages on a single sheet, which then need time to dry, making it unsuitable for rush orders. With an offset printer, only the front and back of a single sheet, or 32 pages, can be set up at a time, and there is more work involved in cutting, folding and binding multi-page publications. That’s why offset printing is better for bulk jobs, The crossover point where it’s generally better to switch to offset printing depends on the page count and quality of the finished product. In general, though, if you’re printing less than 1,500 copies, digital printing makes more sense. Between 1,500 and 5,000 the two may be quite closely matched, depending on your individual job, and over 5,000 copies up, offset printing is definitely cheaper! :-)

Advantages of Offset Printing

1) Large quantities can be printed cost effectively
2) The more you print, the cheaper the price per piece
3) A large variety of paper types with custom finishes can be used
4) Special custom inks such as metallic and Pantone colours are available
5) Highest possible printing quality, with greater detail and colour fidelity

Waterproof paper menus vs Lamination.

If you are laminating a sign, menu or a banner, there is a chance you may want to use it outside. If it is outside, there is also a chance it could be affected by sun, rainwater, snow, sprinklers and other elements. A question I frequently get from customers “Is laminating film waterproof?” This is a great question. This is my answer. Laminating film is waterproof as long as there is a sealed barrier around the sign, menu or banner. This barrier prevents water from seeping in and damaging the paper, photo or sign. If for any reason you use scissors and cut into the film and into the laminated paper, water can now soak in from the edge. Laminating film will, however, deteriorate over time as hot sun can break down the glue. This process usually takes months of direct harsh exposure to the elements. If the laminated item sits under cover or isn’t in direct sunlight, it could potentially last years. The sun can also cause colours to bleach over time. For this reason you can add a UV film. While it is a bit more expensive, UV film can help filter out bleaching sunrays and dramatically enhance and preserve colour. So what is Waterproof Paper? Waterproof paper is made with thick, tightly-bound fibers that prevent water from saturating the paper. Such fibers prevent the paper from weakening, dissolving or changing shape. Sometimes coatings of various forms are used to make paper waterproof. Waterproof paper is ideally suited for use anytime printed materials will be subject to frequent handling or extreme environmental conditions. Waterproof paper is tear-resistant and durable, as well as impervious to grease and chemicals and designed to withstand high and low-temperature fluctuations. These synthetic papers offer stunning print results without the need for lamination or varnish coatings. Our tear proof and waterproof papers have the strength and robustness of plastic paper but look and print like standard paper stocks. Did you know illustrator John Horsely designed and printed the first Christmas card in 1843? It was mass produced and sold for 1 shilling, featuring a family enjoying dinner and drinks! The Christmas card was the idea of Horsley's friend, Sir Henry Cole, who was the first ever Director of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.Sir Henry commissioned the design from Horsley in 1843, and then printed 1000 cards, some of which he sold for one shilling (£0.05) each - a considerable sum at the time. The card is divided into three panels, with the central panel depicting a family celebrating Christmas, while the outer panels depict people caring for the poor. Although apparently, it caused some controversy due to apparently showing a small child sipping wine.Eighteen of the original cards are known to be still in existence, one of which recently changed hands at auction for around £22,000. A further example can be seen (by appointment only) in the V&A museum.

BUSINESS NAMES

“Groucho isn’t my real name. I’m just breaking it in for a friend.” - Julius ‘Groucho’ Marx

Naming a business is a lot like laying the cornerstone of a building. Once it's in place, the entire foundation and structure is aligned with that original stone. Don’t come up with your business name while you’re hidden away in your dark “thinking space” after a few too many drinks and without consulting anyone. It’s a process, come up with lots of possibilities, and get lots of opinions and advice from people you trust. Think about it, you want your business name to resonate with every single one of your potential customers. In the end, it doesn’t really matter how you came up with it or that it was the nickname of your pet rat in college. When thinking of a name – research, research, research. Don't use something that's forgettable nor something someone else is already using – confusion won't help either business. Come up with a few names and ask as many people as you can which they prefer. Find out why they don't like some of your choices. Say your shortlisted name over and over and imagine yourself using it to introduce your business. Also, try to visualise it everywhere it's likely to appear. Will it look as good as you think it sounds? Make sure you own the domain, check to see whether the domain is available, you don't want some kid on the other side of the world creating some obscure site that has nothing to do with you. Once your decision is made, start building your enthusiasm for the new name immediately. Your name is your first step toward building a strong company identity, one that should last as long as you're in business. Your business name will get used more and last longer than any other investment you make in. It’s important that you get it right the first time.

Wishing you well,

PRESENT YOUR PRINT HOW YOU WOULD YOURSELF, PROFESSIONALLY. It's somewhat ironic that people say, “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” because that’s exactly how everyone does judge a book. Books are judged by their covers, houses are appraised by their curb appeal, and people are initially evaluated on how they choose to dress and behave. In a perfect world, this is not fair, moral, or just. What’s inside should count a great deal more and eventually it usually does, but not right away. In the meantime, a lot of opportunities can be lost. This doesn't mean we (or our business) need to be the best dressed or look like something we are not. It does mean making sure our image reflects who we are. So that consumers can 'size us up' quickly (which they will do anyway) and that the first image or impression we leave them with is a positive one. A first impression that will draw them back to us, cause them to remember us, when they want or need what we have to offer and, just as important, will keep them coming back to us after they have experienced what we have to offer.

Doing business without advertising is like winking at a girl in the dark. You know what you are doing, but nobody else does. (Steuart H. Britt). That’s a memorable quote for a real problem. Just because you are doing business — and maybe even doing it really well — nobody is going to know about it if you don’t make it known. The impact of a leaflet in this day and age is undeniable. You simply cannot not run a business nowadays and expect to have a competitive edge in the market without it, treat it as an investment. Promotional products inspire. First Impressions Count – Why Professional Design Is Key and
The Three Second Rule – You only get one chance to make a first impression! Within a few seconds, people judge you. Whether you meet them in the lift or someone reads sees your marketing material you have just 3 seconds to make a first impression. If you don’t instantly send a clear, coherent and compelling message, you run the risk of losing them forever.
The thing is, you don’t know where or when you’ll make that first impression, it may be your leaflet, your business card, your Facebook profile or even an email that gets forwarded on. Every single one of these touch points has to contain the seed of what you uniquely do, who you serve, what their problems are, and how you can transform their lives. This message comes across in your name, your logo, your branding, and every word you write. All these elements come together to convey your unique value proposition or the clear essence of the benefit you uniquely provide and how you’re different from your competitors.

The Differences Between RGB & CMYK Explained.

There are basically two types of colour spaces in graphic designing & printing. RGB and CMYK. The former stands for Red, Green, Blue and is used in computing by devices like desktops, scanners or cameras. The latter stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Key and is used by printing machines. An image we see on a desktop will not necessarily be the same in terms of colour when printed on paper since a printer does not serve RGB colours, which we can see on the desktop. In a nutshell, the difference is that RGB is additive and displays better on a screen; CMYK is subtractive and is intended for a printed page. www.printmallorca.es

WHAT IS EMBOSSING?
Embossing is the process of generating a raised relief image or design onto paper or other materials (known as substrates) such as cardboard, leather, plastic and others. The pressing raises the chosen surface giving it a new dimension. The process of embossing is a very elegant one, it affects the nature of the material being embossed by elevating its standard and quality. It adds a level of beauty that may not have been originally present.

SPOT UV Paper stock, printing processes and special finishes all contribute towards the overall look and feel of a piece of printed literature. Although often overlooked because of the additional production cost, special finishes are a great way to create distinctive and memorable print items, especially for high circulation items like business cards. All of the finishes detailed below can be applied to most pieces of print, including brochures, leaflets, invitations etc.

Varnishes (Machine/Gloss/Matt/Silk/UV)
Much like a wood varnish, print varnishes add a protective liquid layer over the paper stock. The varnish is applied after the printing process, but before the cutting and binding of sheets (so production and drying times can be increased). Common types of varnish include; Machine, Gloss, Matt, Silk and UV.

First impressions matter when you’re printing leaflets.

It’s not just the print design that matters. The type of paper you choose, the thickness and the overall quality of your leaflets are vitally important as well. Especially, if you’ve spent hours working on the perfect design, you don’t want to ruin the impression by specifying cheap, thin paper. How thick should the paper be?.....A simple question that doesn’t really have a set answer. It depends on your budget (of course!), what you’re promoting, how long the leaflets need to last and where you’ll be distributing them. If your leaflet is designed to be read once then thrown away then you might be able to get away with thin paper, leaflets in general on the island tend to be quite thin (90sam to 120gsm) so and we prefer to print our leaflets on our standard paper 150gsm to give the edge on quality and thickness.
Again If you’re looking to print an A6 leaflet to go on a noticeboard or remain on a desk for quite some time then it's advisable to specify something thicker, 350gsm (which is essentially card) is a good choice for something that will last longer. The finish line...Normally, the answer to this question would be gloss or matte? There are actually other choices and options bearing in mind these will cost more.

Below are three types of finish that you might not have considered for your leaflets:

Foil Blocked – This is well worth considering if you want your leaflet to stand out, Part of the surface isn’t printed on but is instead covered in a very shiny foil. You can even use this surface as a mirror – perfect if you’re promoting a health and beauty product (if you have a Superdrug Beautycard in your wallet, you’ll be familiar with this effect).

Spot UV varnish – This is a tactile effect that changes the feel of part of your leaflet and makes it shinier and more reflective. This is well worth considering if you want a certain part of your leaflet (for example your business name or telephone number) to be more prominent.

Embossed Blocked – This is similar to the spot UV varnish effect but means that part of your leaflet is lowered. Again, this is a tactile effect that stands out and makes parts of your leaflet more prominent than others.

If you’d like to talk to us about your leaflets then get in touch with us today. We’d be delighted to help you make your design look as fantastic as possible when it appears in print. www.printmallorca.es

OUR TOP 5 TIPS FOR ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS LEAFLETS

1) Short & Snappy Headlines
Try and stick to five words that focus on the main advantage of your service or product. This might be your only chance to get their attention with it being the first part they’ll read so think hard about that.
2) Show Us Your USPs (Unique Selling Point) .Pick five things that make you the best and clearly communicate them on your leaflet. Why are you different to the competition? Do you offer more? Try and keep away from listing what you do or sell as customers are more interested in how you help them. It may seem obvious what they are to you but folk like you to simply spell it out to them to be won over Put yourself in their shoes, tell them what you’ll get to the bottom of and how you’ll improve their lives.
3) The Big Picture
The quality of the graphics and images you use on any marketing material will instantly affect your brand image and the opinion potential customers form on your service or product. An image can speak a thousand words (before they’ve even read your leaflet) and one impactful pic is worth more than lots of small ones. Consider purchasing existing photography if you don’t have the right high-quality imagery. Or if you can, earmark some budget towards professional photography for a long-lasting and invaluable marketing resource.
4) Don't Cramp the Style!
There’s a psychology to leaflet design. Most will be read top to bottom, left to right so the layout of your key content is important. Keep it brief. It’s not a brochure. Don’t be afraid of some spacing as it will be easier to read. Use the powers of artistic persuasion by dangling a creative carrot to persuade your prospective customers to get in touch for any more info they might want.
Your content needs to be uncomplicated, appealing and direct. Allow your headline, imagery and text to talk and avoid overloading your leaflet with excessive and uninspiring info. Don’t forget to goof-proof it! Check through every part of the artwork, proof-read every word, price and date and get second and third opinions to see if your customers would easily understand it too.
5) Hold Some, Fold Some
Many will just go for a standard option when it comes to leaflet printing but there’s so many choices for your brand out there and an effortless fold for a change can make your flyer really stand out. Contact [email protected] if you are thinking of a leaflet campaign for more details.

FUNNY WORDS THAT YOU FIND IN PRINTING

IMPOSITION – In ordinary life, this describes when your in-laws are staying over at your house for the holidays. In the printing industry, this describes the positioning of pages onto a large sheet of paper. A chief reason for imposing a job is for efficiency. For example, if a project has 10 different business cards and a quantity of 1000 each, there are two options for production. Option number one is to repeat the same card 10 times on an 8.5 x 11 sheet and run 100 sheets of each card. Or, the 10 different cards can be placed on one 8.5 x 11 sheet and printed 1000 times. Many times to maximize the real estate of a large press sheet, different jobs are imposed and sufficient quantities are run to satisfy the minimum quantity. It used to be an incredibly complex task to calculate these different scenarios. It’s relatively easy now by using special imposition software.
The other time that imposition becomes important is when a multi-page book is being produced. Presses are classified as being able to print 2, 4, 8 or 16 pages onto a sheet of paper. These large sheets are folded into SIGNATURE. A signature is used is to designate a large sheet of paper that contains multiple pages and then bound in a variety of different ways ie folded into a smaller size to form a booklet. To maximize the efficiency of using the largest sheet available, there may be pages contained on the signature that is not printed and blank. For example, a book that has 15 printed pages may contain 1 page that is blank since a signature always contains an even number of pages. Sometimes on government publications, you will see the phrase “This page intentionally left blank” to dispel any type of conspiracy theories on what should have been printed on the blank page. Finally, remember as, with any technical jargon, it’s important to ask for an explanation if something doesn’t quite make sense to you. I'm fast learning this with my boat!! ;-)

The importance of proofreading and how To avoid costly errors with your print. How do you prevent costly reprints and delays with your product? You proof! Proofing your artwork doesn't take long - but can save you thousands

Everyone makes errors and it’s true that we often don’t see our own errors. As G. Rawlinson from Cambridge University famously wrote:

Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn’t mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a total mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit a porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe. Incredible eh?

To proof something means to check it over – thoroughly. It’s not just you who needs to take a look, either: get at least one – preferably two or three – other pairs of eyes on the final design. It’s OK to tell people you don’t want their design input, especially if you’re worried about a ‘too many cooks spoil the broth’ situation. Just let them know to check it over for all of the following information:

All spelling is correct (and consistent particularly if you have a house or brand style)
All phone numbers are correct
All websites are spelt correctly and are clear to see (i.e., not on highly patterned backgrounds)
Any event dates are correct – this is particularly important if you are listing the day of the week, such as ‘Thursday 1st September’, in case either the day or date is wrong!
Images don’t conflict with the text making it hard to read
The document has a full 6mm ‘safe zone’ (9mm on spiral bound booklets) around the edges, with no text or graphics in this area, to prevent these being trimmed in the print process
Any important terms and conditions (such as non-refundable tickets) are included where necessary
Ticket prices are clearly listed – and correct!
Even if you think you’re absolutely, totally, 100%, entirely, definitely positive that your design is correct, it’s still wise to get someone else to check it over. When you’ve been looking at something for hours or even days, it can be easy to miss the glaringly obvious errors. We’ve all been there!

What To Do If Your Design Is Wrong – And It’s Too Late To Stop Printing -It’s not all a tragedy, however: there are some steps you can take to remedy the situation. The first option is the most obvious: absorb the cost and arrange for a reprint with the correct artwork. This is great if you have plenty of time before your event, or before you send out your direct mail campaign. If it’s too late to hire your designer, or you simply can’t afford one for any more work, don’t fret. See if there is a way your error can be corrected: if your ticket prices are wrong, can you arrange for fast delivery customised stickers to be sent out? Doing this will mean you can cover up the incorrect ticket price, for example, with just a little bit of manual labour. You could also consider adding an amendment slip – either in the style of a compliment slip or as a small A7 leaflet – stapled to your flyer, menu, or price list. This again requires a bit more design and printing, but if you use a design online template you can get this put together in an hour and have it in your hands very quickly. This is often faster than recalling your designer to change the artwork and ordering a re-print.
