One of the main Suema/Suri tribe of Ethiopia customs is stick fighting. This ritual and sport is called Donga or Segenai. It is central to in Suri culture. It is a way for warriors to find girlfriends; it can also be a way to settle conflicts. On this occasion men show their courage, their resistance to pain, to the young women. This was a documentary I filmed for Cosmo Film Factory of Austria. The main film crew was afraid to be on the location of the fight, because some days ago there was killing each other among the Surma at the end of the stick fight ceremony. I decided to go to the field alone with the the Surma villagers to film this. I was the only outsider there. Was a great experience.
