Yet again, my color palette of the month isn't realistic! It's more about how I want May to feel.
The reality is that here in Finland the leaves are starting to appear at the beginning of May. And then it only takes a couple of weeks for all the plants to go green and blossom.
So, my color palette should match the reality by the end of the month.
This month's plant is patchouli, one of my favourite insenses for yin yoga and meditation

APRIL color palette is fresh and vibrant, and is more in tune with how I feel, than with what's going on outside 😅
April in Finland isn't green at all. The first leaves will start appearing at the end of April at earliest. But there is definitely less and less snow every day, and I can finally stop wearing my winter jacket 🙂
What's April like in your places?
A very special flower for me!
Crocuses haven't bloomed here yet, but they should appear in a few weeks.
When I see these colorful beauties, spring is officially here!
For the past three years I've been trying to rename my design business a dozen times.
I called it Crocus Paperi when I was doing wedding prints. I thought that:
- I'd work with paper, so there's "paperi" (paper in Finnish)
- I'd create floral designs, so let's throw in some flower name
Later on, when I moved to illustration and brand design I tried to come up with a new name or simply work under my own name (which is Irina 😊). After days of brainstorming, drafting new logos and brand concepts, nothing seemed right.
So, at the beginning of this year I realized that I'm so used to .paperi. Sounds cute, spells pretty, love it!
FREEBIE of the month is this elegant minimalist wedding set, which includes:
- Save the Date card
- Invitation
- Menu
As usual, only free fonts are used.

March color pallette is here!
To be honest, it's my least favourite month of the year. I feel like it's not fair that it's considered spring, when in fact it's a fourth winter month here in Finland. Or fifth if you count November 😂
But although it doesn't look like spring, it starts feeling so. The sky is a bit brighter, the earth starts thawing, and there is a feel of hope on the air.
So, in March I'm feeling hopeful!
A new plant from my botanical collection available on
I knew liquorice only as a medicinal plant. It's a key ingredient in cough syrups.
But when I moved to Finland 10 years ago a whole new world of liquorice opened up to me. Here you can find pretty much anything with liquorice flavour: candy, ice-cream, chewing gum.
I'm not yet a big fan, but it slowly grew on me. Still prefer it as natural medicine.
WORKING ON THE GO
Freedom and location independence used or be one of my favourite things about my work.
At first I was really excited about the idea that I can work and take time off whenever I want. Working in airports and new places felt cool and free.
I felt like I'd just respond to a couple emails, send an invoice, make a few iterations. I tried to persuade myself it wasn't actual work. Just a couple hours a day.
But this "freedom" turned out to be tricky
Working while traveling blurs my perception of reality. The difference between workdays and weekends disappears. Am I on vacation or am I still working?
The second issue is that working on a laptop is damaging for both my back and my eyes. Even for a couple hours a day. To me desktop monitor is a must.
Every time I came back from "working" vacation, my massage therapist noted how tense my back and neck were, and I had to take extra care about my posture.
So, this year I promised myself to take real vacations and to enjoy places where I go.
I'm currently exploring English countryside in a laptop-free mode.
And here is February freebie: hand drawn herbs illustrations!
Available as vector and PNG on my website - crocuspaperi.com. Link in bio.
February palette is a perfect reflection of Finnish nature at the moment: it’s actually monochrome. Black earth and trees, grey show and white sky.
Makes me feel gloomy and focused.
OUTSOURCING
I've been recently thinking that although technically I am a one person company, in reality a bunch of people are involved running my small business.
I get help with:
▪️accounting
▪️photography
▪️marketing and business strategy
▪️website design
▪️social media
Overall, I can say that I know a bit about all these areas above. I can take photos and videos, I’ve got some knowledge in marketing, taxes and social media.
At the beginning I did everything myself, even accounting, because I couldn't afford any services. I made mistakes and learnt on the go.
With time I realized that to provide better services and grow into a company I needed to:
1️⃣ focus on what I do best
2️⃣ accept the fact that although I can take photos and make a website layout, professionals can do it much better
3️⃣ be able to afford their services
So, as soon as I had extra budget, the first thing I did was to get an accountant.
✨ What should you get help with as a small business owner?
It depends on your location, personal skills and preferences. But I would say that having a professional accountant take care of your finances and tax reporting is a great idea in most cases.
✨ What do you outsource as a small business owner?
Of course I’ve got Pinterest boards full of ideas and inspiration. But my favourite inspiration source will always be botanical books. Swipe to see three of my top ones:
1️⃣ Yves Rocher "100 plants 1000 usages"
This book is a treasure! You must know as a natural cosmetics brand. Yves Rocher was the founder of the company and a pioneer of the use of natural ingredients in modern skincare.
This book is a collection of plants and recipies of home-made skincare products you can create using these plants.
2️⃣ Jason Irving "The Gardener's Companion to Medicinal Plants"
Beautifully illustrated book by medicinal plants resercher Jason Irving and .
has long been on my list of places to visit, and I'm finally going there this March!
3️⃣ Rowan Bain "William Morris's Flowers"
William Morris has always been a great inspiration to me. His floral and botanical pieces are an example of perfection to me.
I'm in love with the use of color, sophisticated patterns, printing techniques and his love for the English nature.
