Did you know that there are over 80,000 honey bees who have a home at the Otaniemi campus? These little pollinators are like the campus's own tiny superheroes! 🌍 In a world where biodiversity loss is a real concern, with extinction threatening around a million species of flora and fauna, pollinators play a crucial role. They maintain the growth of trees, flowers, and other plants. 🐝 All the honey bees live in locally built hives, which are named after pop queens (obviously)! Hives are called Cardibee, Cardibee Jr, and Beeyonce. 🌻 Beekeepers are students at Aalto who build and take care of each hive and its residents, contributing to a thriving ecosystem right on our campus - check out what life as a beekeeper can be like!

Like Swarowski – but so much better! 🎇 These wooden crystals are a gift from Noora Yau, Anna Semi and Konrad Klockars to a fashion industry struggling with sustainability – in a world where humans love things that sparkle. 3D-printed onto the fabric, they’re complemented with the nanocellulose colour coating. It’s non-toxic, biodegradable and renewable – and naturally gorgeous just like the bright colours of beetles, peacocks and butterflies. If all goes well, in five years the trio hopes to be working with a major company or manufacturing wood crystals in their own studio for the world's top brands. But luxury isn't about using glittery eco-colours to sell more disposable goods. First and foremost, it's about valuing the material and respecting nature, the trio say. 💚 Read more: https://www.aalto.fi/en/news/natural-luxury-3d-printed-wooden-crystals-make-fashion-shine?utm_medium=social_own&utm_source=facebook
Our focus on short-term profit has caused a cascade of problems. The fashion and textile industry, in particular, highlights the consequences, namely environmental degradation and societal inequality, of our current models. The solution isn’t more of anything, it’s less. Minna Halme, Professor of Sustainability Management, has dedicated her life on finding alternative solutions to measuring success and well-being. 💚 We need to prioritise resiliency over efficiency, placing greater emphasis on long-lasting products, repair and reuse. 💚 To achieve a sustainable model, we must make it fashionable and easier for consumers to choose environmentally and socially sustainable products. A shift in our collective values will push the industry to do things differently. 💚 We can ensure companies stay competitive while transitioning to a sustainable model by embracing local production and closed-loop supply chains. Alusta, a green oasis in the heart of Helsinki, is a perfect place to spend the sunny Spring days – and to experience award-winning architecture! 🏅 Last Friday, Suomen Arkkitehtiliitto SAFA awarded Alusta with Tunnustuspaanu, recognition for advancing sustainable development and sparking discussion on ecological building practices. "Architects Elina Koivisto and Maiju Suomi have successfully created a place through architecture where biodiversity can be experienced with all senses, offering a physical and mental space for togetherness, discussion, and seeking the right questions," explains Juha Päätalo, the chair of Eko-SAFA, which selects the award recipients. Our heartfelt congrats to Alusta as well as Elina Koivisto and Maiju Suomi for the brilliant work done in creating a place for collective exploration, connectedness and hope 💚 📍 Alusta is currently located in the courtyard between the Museum of Architecture and the Design Museum. In September, the pavillion and its plants will find a new home on our campus in Otaniemi. 👀 Among other fascinating projects, Alusta is also part of this year's Designs for a Cooler Planet: Makers of the impossible from 6 September to 3 October 2024.
Avaruudessa on meidän lisäksi (todennäköisesti) muuta elämää. 👽 Tämä asia pitää astrofyysikko Joni Tammea hereillä öisin. Mutta voisiko auringon läpi tosiaan lähettää sanoman toiselle planeetalle? Studiossa sarjaa ruotivat astrofyysikko ja Metsähovin radio-observatorion johtaja Joni Tammi sekä Aalto-yliopiston alumni, scifi-intoilija Suvi Rantonen. Vieraana myös kvanttifyysikko Mika A. Sillanpää. Jakson voi katsoa kokonaisuudessaan Youtube-kanavaltamme tai kuunnella Spotifysta, linkit kommenteissa.

How about some cool new dance moves for Wappu celebrations? This choreography is designed for Virtual Reality, but never mind, just ride the wave, and keep on dancing! In general, one cannot follow a new choreography in real time because of the delay in human perceptual motor control. The WAVE technique developed by the researchers, on the other hand, is based on anticipating future movement, such as a turn. ‘The wave-like movement of the model dancers allows you to see in advance what kind of movement is coming next. And you don't have to rehearse the movement beforehand,’ says Markus Laattala. ‘In the choreography we implemented, making a wave is communication, a kind of micro-canon in which the model dancers follow the same choreography with a split-second delay,’ says Perttu Hämäläinen. Today’s the International Dance Day, that celebrates all kinds of dances and dancers today. Read the story and watch the full video here https://www.aalto.fi/en/news/researchers-develop-a-new-way-to-instruct-dance-in-virtual-reality?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social_own
We're re-evaluating education policies for the well-being of kids and families with a unique data-driven initiative! In Finland's Two-Year Pre-School Experiment researchers, policymakers, and educators aims to determine the long-term effects of starting pre-school a year earlier than usual. 👉 The experiment offers the opportunity to improve the quality of education and equal opportunities to all children, setting them on a path towards better educational journey right from the start. 👉 The goal is to continue monitoring children into adulthood. This way, it would be determined whether the possible effects of early childhood education are also evident later on or if they level out during the school years. 👉 Such an extended study would also be internationally significant. By testing and monitoring policies over time, governments can make better decisions and avoid wasting resources on ineffective or harmful initiatives.
