Hey! I am Niko Gamett.
I am from Las Vegas and I am half-finnish and half-american. Being from America, I grew up not meeting my relatives on my Finnish side terribly often, and I learned most about my family through stories which my mother would tell. However, I always looked up to my grandpa and enjoyed telling people about him. I notice a lot of personality traits in myself which also resemble his own personality. Most specifically, he represents sisu very well and I have noticed some sisu in myself. Now I am living in Lahti where I get to listen to my grandpa tell stories about himself very often. I love learning about my family and where my tendencies and personality come from.

Hey I'm Jenna Lambourne!

My great-grandma was Armenian and immigrated to America when she was 7 years old. She would make amazing Armenian dishes! She passed all of her recipes on to my grandma who is also a wonderful cook. One of my favorite Armenian dishes is Borek. It is cheesy, buttery, and made of phyllo dough. I love making my great-grandma's recipes and learning more about my family and my unique heritage!

Hi this is Kyleigh Messinger!
I want to tell you a story about my family history. My great grandmother Fen was born in China. When she was a baby she got very sick. Her parents took her to the Voodoo Doctor to find help. The doctor told them that Fen needed to marry a widow to be healed. So they went to the Matchmaker to find such a man. The Matchmaker found a young boy, by the name of Chang around 8 years old, who was a widow. And so to save Fen's life, they were married. One day the Emperor's fortune teller told the Emperor that someone from Chang’s family would overthrow the Emperor. So the Emperor sent out a decree to kill all the men in Chang's family. So he and his family fled from China to Thailand, leaving his wife Fen. But the marriage in fact healed Fen and she grew into a beautiful young woman. Later, Fen's mother went to Thailand in search of Chang on Fen's behalf. She found him and he thought she was so pretty so he agreed to take in Fen because, like mother like daughter. They came back to Thailand together and Chang's Thai wife did not like Fen. She would call her terrible names but Chang would just tell Fen that she was telling her how pretty she was. Eventually Chang's Thai wife left him for another man and left, in their custody, her four kids. Chang and Fen ended up having 8 kids of their own for a total of 12 kids. I come from Chang and Fen's kids! I imagine they lived happily ever after.

I have loved learning about my family history and I invite you to do the same!

Why do I love Finland?
Because it is where my family came from and it is a part of who I am!

Where is your family from?

09/10/2022

Who are you?
Where did your big blue eyes come from?
Why do you have such a beautiful voice?
It's because you inherited them from someone in your family! Message us to learn about why you are the way you are!

Who are you named after?! And what's their story?

My middle name is Audrie. Yep, spelled with ie not a y. Like my great grandma. Although I never met her, my mom and grandpa have told me a lot about her. She was courageous, caring and a devoted mom and daughter. I feel honored to be named after her. Thanks to familysearch.org I have pictures, stories and letters about her!

I'm Lilly! And this is my twin brother, Sterling!
My mom took the first picture of us years ago when we agreed to a truce after a sand fight on a beach in California. Because she captured this moment, I forever have a sweet memory connected to it. Sterling and I recreated this picture our senior year of high school and it will forever be my favorite!

Recreate a picture of you and your family! Upload those photos as a Memory on FamilySearch.org, explaining the story behind the picture as an audio recording or a written story!

Hi! My name is Matthew Stratford, and I've lived in Finland for almost a year!

Before I moved to Finland, I knew I had some family history in Finland, but I didn't know much about it. But I was excited to come to Finland and hopefully learn more about my family history. By some "crazy coincidence", I moved to Jyväskylä and lived there for a few months. I told some members of my church in Jyväskylä that I wanted to learn more about my family history. These members of my church started doing research on my family. As they investigated, they found that my Grandmother's family, comes from a small town near Jyväskylä, called Petäjävesi. They told me that it can be very difficult to find much information in Petäjävesi, because some important records were lost. But by a miracle, we were able to find over 100 of my ancestors! My love for family history has grown as I have learned more. I'm excited to visit Petäjävesi soon and hopefully learn more about them. When we we learn where we come from, we can find principles of our ancestors that we can apply to our lives. I'm grateful for my church members who helped me find my roots here in Finland!

Hello, I am Jonah. This last week has been truly a great experience. I went to a graveyard in Parainen (near Turku, Finland). My great great grandfather was buried there. It was great to walk in Parainen and see how he lived.

He was a sailor and loved the sea. He was an experienced icebreaker captain who once came out of retirement to save some stuck sailors. Eventually Gustav was the captain of his own ship named the S/S Silvia.

I appreciated this opportunity to learn more about my family. If you want to learn more about your ancestors send us a message!

Finland Facts! Have you ever heard of Simo Häyhä, otherwise known as the White Death?
He has a story. It is good to remember those that came before us and learn more about them. One way to do this is through family history work.
