This is my final blog in this covid series. For some, dreams have been realised; for others, out of necessity has come innovation, and yet for others every day is still a struggle.

Covid has ignited the entrepreneurial spirit of our people, and many exciting innovations and transformations have evolved. The community response to these initiatives has been very positive, and our lives have been made so much more enjoyable during some extremely worrying and troubling times. For instance:

- Personal chauffer/shopper and door to door delivery services help families isolate and keep safe in their bubbles. Overseas families are able to provide for their loved ones a level of care that they simply never could before.

- Musicians and live bands have devised new ways for us to listen to their music while they wait for the time they can once more perform live for us in person. Online payment/donations are generously made without hesitation to support their livelihood;

- Online ordering of grocery shopping is now a way of life for many. Our major supermarkets have stepped up their game with staples now purchasable on line and delivered to your door, or whomever you wish to treat.

- A Community Pantry was initiated by Everyday Supermarket in Votualevu. They had on their shelves 100 free loaves of bread a day for the needy which further inspired locals to buy other items from the supermarket and contribute to the produce on the shelves.

- Our children have been out of school for about a year and exciting kidpreneur ventures were borne - another delight to support.

- amazing creativity and ingenuity is even more evident in our local artisans with the emergence of jewellery items, natural made soaps and beauty products and even deco for the home;

- there has been an explosion of food offerings - an amazing food fest - an assortment of absolutely scrumptious food is now available, all by takeout service.

Over the coming days I will share some of these new and exciting ventures with you, though our first mention must be VotCity Flea Market, the flagbearer of covid entrepreneurship in Nadi. It is still going strong with vendors selling fresh fruit & veg, pure Fiji honey, even fresh chilled soursop juice, and all types of tasty island foods from your favorite curry & roti parcels, delicious seafood, asian fusion dishes, and the ever popular Mama's Kitchen and her signature vudi lolo and coconut cream pies ..

Return visitors to Nadi may note that sadly, some businesses and popular eating places have closed, some temporarily, others perhaps will not return.

Cashless payment for goods and services is so very easy now as many individuals, businesses and restaurants are signed up for internet banking, Vodafone MPaisa and Digicel MyCash digital wallets.

BouganVilla Covid Blog #1 - Down but not out in Nadi!

We are into six month's since Nadi has had any vacationing visitors from anywhere, and its over 18 months since our tourism sector basically shut down. Covid has wreaked havoc and hardship in Fiji. Displaced workers in the tourism industry number 125,000 or more. Some have ventured into innovative home business opportunities; for many, life is still a daily struggle.

Our recent gold and bronze medal wins at the Olympic Games was a much needed boost to our country’s morale .. our Women’s 7s team really stole the show with their gutsy bronze medal win.

Some may think Fiji is no longer a safe place to visit .. not so.. we may be down a little, but we are definitely not out! In spite of a raging pandemic, safety in the tropics has become our reality. Life here is still everything you love about Fiji, our wonderful people, and our tropical lifestyle ..

So, exactly what is life like here right now in the tourism hub of Fiji, in the midst of the covid pandemic? Currently, restrictions on social gatherings continue, and the nightly curfew is 7pm.

Some things have not changed .. for one, our resilient people, despite the difficulties, are still the same smiling faces; second, our sun, sea, and sand; and third our fabulous weather; Pineapples, pawpaw, watermelon abound, the ever favourite bu - sweet young coconut, and mango season is up ahead..

Maybe right now we cant celebrate with friends, do a pub crawl, have sundowner drinks and dance to the band, have dinner at a restaurant .. but it wont always be like that .. there is still so much you can do and enjoy, and keep safe!
