The PCCMHS Phase II Partners (ESCAP, PIFS, ILO, IOM) visited Tuvalu this week from 2-6 July. The purpose of the visit was to brief the Government of Tuvalu and stakeholders on the Pacific Regional Framework on Climate Mobility and progress its national level implementation of PCCMHS activities by gathering perspectives from key stakeholders.
On Day 1, PCCMHS Partners made courtesy calls to the New Zealand Aid Tuvalu Coordination Office and thanked Dr. Tauisi Taupo, now PS for Finance and Economic Planning, for his leadership in the Joint Working Group (JWG).
On Day 2, PCCMHS partners discussed priorities with Hon. Minister of Home Affairs, Climate Change and Environment, Dr. Maina Talia. In addition, the team planned activities at Climate Change Department to be supported by IOM Tuvalu, collaborated with Labour Department, explored partnerships at Tuvalu NDMO and Ministry of Foreign Affairs. ILO also convened meetings with the Tuvalu Overseas Seafarers Union.
On Day 3, PCCMHS partners explored the key gaps and issues related to climate mobility, through discussions with TUCAN, Tuvalu Red Cross and the President of the EKT and the Tuvalu National Private Sector Organization. The Fiji NDMO and IOM Fiji with the funding support from KOICA Fiji & Pacific Office μ½μ΄μΉ΄ νΌμ§&ννμ μ¬λ¬΄μ retrofitted the Natadradave Evacuation Center in Natadradave, Tailevu Province and facilitated the official handover to the community on 12 April.
The retrofitting of the evacuation center was initiated by the urgent need for gender and disability inclusive disaster-resilient infrastructure, capable of serving as a multipurpose center during times of crisis. As Ms. Hankyulsam Cho, KOICA Country Director in Fiji, expressed during the handover ceremony, "May this evacuation center stand as a beacon of hope and resilience, demonstrating what can be achieved when we unite with a shared purpose."
With a focus on gender-sensitive and people-centered preparedness, IOM - UN Migration recognizes the needs of women, girls, children, and the elderly as we worked on retrofitting the evacuation center. Our goal is to place the safety of women and girls first by mitigating risks of gender-based violence and exclusion, by building inclusive water and hygiene facilities, installing handrails, ramps, and partitions to ensure the dignified usability of the evacuation center by all.
This achievement not only ensures the physical safety of individuals during disasters but also reaffirms IOMβs commitment to inclusivity and solidarity within the community.
