Fiji Council of Churches general secretary the Rev Simione Tugi has highlighted the importance of the family in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

And he’s also urged members of the public to reach out to medical centres to get tested.

“You know for us, the Fijian people, the stigma for HIV is one of the reasons why we never go for early testing,” Mr Tugi said.

“They don’t feel comfortable going to church and hospital because of society’s views on things.

“Some have even been shunned by family and friends.”

Mr Tugi said this did not represent the true meaning of Christianity and that people should move away from the traditional mindset.

“We need to have acceptance in the community; we are all human beings, loved by God, and we only have each other.

“So, the only thing now is taking care of each other, the very people we are supposed to look after are the vulnerable.”

Mr Tugi said this was the church’s responsibility, and “we can’t just push them aside”.

“Who is going to look after them? The church, the vanua, and the Government? Please, take care of them.”

Mr Tugi urged members of the public to seek out medical centres for testing.

“This is life and death; you need to go and help yourselves. Get tested.”

Mr Tugi also urged parents to value family time with their children, adding the importance of family time would determine Fiji’s society of tomorrow.

“In the Bible there are only two institutions – the family in the Old Testament and the church in the New Testament.

“So, when the family breaks down, every fibre of society will break down. That’s why almost all of our youths are involved in all sorts of things because there is no family time.

Mr Tugi cited the breaking down of family units, “that’s the most common unit”.

“Nowadays, the couple is doing their own thing, and the children are doing their own.

“Whenever they want to seek validation, reassurance, they won’t be able to because the parents are not present.

“They run to their friends, who will give them whatever they want to hear.

“We think we can handle it alone, but the truth is we can’t; it’s a multifaceted approach.”

The Bible commands us to "fear God, honor the King" and to "pray for those in authority".

But what do we do when we disagree with the "King- when those in authority impose harmful policies?

Well we must know the crucial distinction between the office of the ruler and the person of the ruler.

Christian's are commanded to respect the office but if the person acts contrary to God's law, Christian's have a duty to make known of their views.

Christian's are called to honor the ruling authority as a reflection of divine authority.

On the other hand the Bible is replete with prophetic judgment on particular rulers for oppressing the poor and defying divine law.

📌 Latest Weather Updates - Released at 5am by Fiji Meteorological Service ‼️

The current projections indicate that it is going to be a Category 2 system, but on the high end of this scale. Storm force winds are likely over the Yasawa and Mamanuca Groups, western and southern Viti Levu, Vatulele, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands However, it is a huge system and its effect can be far reaching. Consequently, Gale Warning is in force as far as western Vanua Levu (Dreketi, Bua to Savusavu), eastern Viti Levu

Category 1 tropical cyclone Mal was located around 430km West of Rotuma or 650km Northwest of Yasawa-i-Rara at 3am this morning. It is currently moving quite rapidly in a southeasterly direction towards Fiji with a speed of 28km/hr.

It is expected to pass close to the west of the Fiji Group tonight with the centre of the system expected to lay approximately 170km west of Nadi at 3am tomorrow morning. The cyclone may begin to have an impact on the Yasawa and Mamanuca Groups from later today. While the system is expected to begin to affect Viti Levu from later this afternoon, most of the destructive winds are expected tonight.

Consequently, Gale Warning is in force as far as western Vanua Levu (Dreketi, Bua to Savusavu), eastern Viti Levu and Lomaiviti Group.

These winds can break tree branches, blow unsecured and loose materials, disrupt communication network and power supply due to damaged power lines, damage temporary and weak structures, increase the risk of sea travel for all types of sea crafts, and increase the risk for hazardous breaking waves and coastal inundation of debris along low lying coastal areas, especially during high tides. The ground is already saturated with a lot of rainfall in parts of the country. Thus, it can take little rainfall to knock off trees.

The trough of low pressure associated with tropical cyclone Mal is already bringing a lot of rainfall over the country, especially over the Central Division. Consequently, a Flash Flood Warning is in force for parts of Suva and Lami with a Flash Flood Alert for most parts of the Central Division and Ovalau Island. Rainfall activity may intensify when the cyclone comes close to Fiji. The whole of Fiji Group is under a Heavy Rainfall Warning. High tide is around 7am this morning, with the next one at around 7pm tonight.

THE FIJI COUNCIL OF CHURCHES

Hosts

“TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION PRAYER BREAKFAST”

Thursday 28th September 9.00am LDS Hall 16 Berry Road Suva

The Fiji Parliament has passed the motion to establish a “Truth and Reconciliation Commission” to facilitate open and free engagement in truth telling and confront fears in view of conflicting statements and utterances regarding motives behind the political upheavals so that closure and healing for Fiji is achieved and permanently put to rest this unfortunate and turbulent chapter of our independent history.

Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka states that the “Truth and Reconciliation Commission” will help remove the division between the two main communities that have co-existed since well before independence.

The Fiji Council of Churches is holding a Prayer Breakfast to reflect and pray for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in Fiji.

Prayer Breakfast Speaker:

His Grace Archbishop Dr Peter Loy Chong who holds a doctorate in Sacred Theology from the Santa Clara University CA. USA will speak on St Paul's theology of reconciliation (Corinthians, 2 Cor. 5:17-20)

Key Message

The central point of St Paul’s teaching on reconciliation is that God’s love has been poured onto us as the result of the reconciliation God has affected in Christ. Through reconciliation we have become a new creation. St Paul's’ letter teach three key points regarding reconciliation.

1.Reconciliation is the work of God,

2.Reconciliation is more a spirituality than a strategy

3.Reconciliation makes both the victim and wrongdoer a new creation.

Fiji Council of Churches warmly invites all our Partners, Church Leaders, NGO, Government, MPs, Private Sectors, Diplomatic Co to this important “Truth and Reconciliation Prayer Breakfast.
