KIDS CLASSES What are dry ingredients? Why do we incorporate them at the end? What is the result when we measure in volume vs. weight? Reading and understanding recipes written by others is a critical step to developing our own creations. Not to mention the opportunity to practice math, vocabulary and new techniques.

Kids can benefit from developing their confidence in the kitchen, but not every dinner can be a teaching moment. We cannot scaffold skills while multitasking and most family meals are cooked at crunch time.

Find the moment that you can be open to the mess, the mistakes, and the slowing down. Build the skills first, in their own designated time without pressure or the necessity of a result. Suddenly the child who was “in the way” becomes a kid who can truly help get dinner in the table.

Reflective practices are amazingly protective against competition and (unfruitful)comparison.

As I am building more workshops for kids I realize how results focused food can be and am working hard to keep perfectionism out of the kitchen and off of the plate.

This is HARD. They are already wired to rate things in a hierarchical order. I find that for me personally it is a tricky double message to say «  you eat with your eyes first » and « let’s just learn from the process ».

I love beautiful and delicious food and believe aesthetics have their value. All I can hope is that by asking them to question why they like something-and where those preferences come from- that we can keep things curious.

When we sit down after a busy workshop we present our dishes at the table -not to only recap what we did, but also reflect on we might do differently next time. Reflective practices helps us to find opportunities for learning which we might otherwise deem as a failure in the kitchen. Cheers to questioning our expectations of perfection and learning from our experiences.

Let’s raise the bar for kid cooking programs where students actually can take pride in the skills they are learning instead of working backwards from a desired end result. Trusting that they know how to properly follow a recipe,understand cooking vocabulary, measure a dry ingredient, peel, chop, or work safely at the stove… any one of these skills will give them the confidence to work on their own and feel that their contribution is REAL.

There are classic dangers that come with working in the kitchen. Of course we do not want our kids to get cut or burned. Before they learn skills they first need to be supported to take age appropriate risks and to know when to ask for help. There are a lot of opportunities for safe confidence building when children are ready to take on more responsibility in the kitchen. When we can trust their seriousness, they will want to prove us right.
