Today we say a sad final farewell to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, we celebrate her life & dedicated service. A truly remarkable woman who has touched so many lives in so many ways.

I had the privilege and honour to be invited to her garden party after the London Olympics and remember how beautiful (and tiny) she was, wearing the most perfect pale pink coat dress, with matching hat and a perfectly matching pink umbrella.

Her smile lit up the garden as she spoke with athletes and support staff. One of my proudest moments which I will remember forever.

Known for her signature red or pink lip, her beauty inside and out was, and is timeless.

She will be in our hearts forever.

Sending deepest condolences to the Royal Family in this moment of greatest sadness.

May you rest in peace, your Majesty, with your beloved Philip.

I just had to share this gorgeous photo of Karina and her lovely daughter on this sunny Mother’s Day! Both looking fabulous wearing our broad spectrum SPF30 N**e Flora & Snowberry Red lip treatment!

Like many of you, daily SPF on my face and lips is a routine I now never miss, but there was a time in my teenage years & early twenties when SPF was only used on holiday and factor 4 was often the preferred choice ( , )😱😱😱 !!!

Thankfully things have moved on and thanks to many Mothers, their children, teenagers and young adults are using spf regularly and understanding the importance for long term skin health.

I feel so passionately about education & supporting people through their skincare journey & choices and I feel so grateful to all my lovely clinics & stockists who do the same everyday.

So I have been a little quiet on instagram...but after having lunch with the lovely Dr Sharon, 𝐃𝐫𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐁𝐃𝐒 𝐌𝐉𝐃𝐅 𝐏𝐆𝐂𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐄𝐝 ™] last week, I was reminded and inspired to be a little more visible on these squares. It also got me thinking, why have I been so invisible... ?⁠

The simple answer is that I have been totally overwhelmed with work, lots of lovely new customers & clinics in the last few months - of which I am grateful for beyond words! Finding time for social media in between orders has been a struggle⁠ yet again and I think mentally I just needed a digital break!.⁠
⁠... but as I dug a little deeper I realised there's a little more too it, because I haven't found anytime for me either. ⁠

As women in her 40s fast approaching the next decade (how exactly did that happen ?!?😳) I have been feeling a bit unsettled by the changes in my skin & without really realising, I think its part of why I have retreated a little from bit from life & maybe these squares.⁠

So while I still have work to do on finding that elusive balance between work & life I am making a promise to myself to be a little more visible and who knows maybe go wild and finally book the facial I have been promising myself for the last few months!!!⁠

On this 👻🎃🧙‍♀️spooky weekend 👻🎃🧙‍♀️I am loving these haunted lips by talented artist 💋🕸💋.

Keeping lips hydrated, smooth and plump year after year, doesn’t have to be a chore, some simple daily and weekly steps can keep your lips in great shape as the seasons change and protect them from photo-ageing UV, whatever your lifestyle of make up look.

A few of our top tips to stop your lips from getting haunted by dry flakey unhappy lips are:

💀avoid harsh sugar or physical exfoliants as dry dehydrated lips can often be a little inflamed and a harsh scrub can just make matters worse (despite that rather satisfying sugary feeling at the time!). Instead use a damp muslin (or flannel) to firmly wipe (not scrub) a few times a week.

🧙‍♀️dab a little oil on the lips (an un-fragranced plant oil is ideal) and gently massage in before applying an emollient balm overnight to lock in moisture and nourish the lip.

👻 apply your SPF30 balm in the morning and throughout the day. Use alone, under or over other lip colour to protect against collagen loss, and the fine lines, wrinkles and loss of fullness which can follow.

🕸If you have recurrent or chronically dry lips, consider changing your toothpaste to an SLS free one and adding some omega 3 & 7 to your daily supplements.

As part of menopause awareness month we are focusing on key aspects of lips over time.⁠⁠

💋 If lips could speak to your 16 year old (or preferably younger)self they would say please use an SPF30 lip balm every day (and yes you can put it on under your favourite matt lip or your uber glossy gloss).⁠⁠

💋WHY??? because it will protect your collagen and slow photo-ageing down considerably... it will also help guard against the dehydration that leads to sore, dry, chapped lips.⁠⁠

💋Your lips would also say its never too early or too late to start protecting the delicate skin because UV damage is cumulative, the more you stop the better!⁠⁠

💋 Over time, unprotected lips can become much more sensitive to UV (UVA & UVB) and this increases if you have burnt your lips in the past...The skin never forgets and the damage lurks below. High UV exposure also increases the risk of lip cancers in later years too. ⁠⁠

💋..and finally the menopause punch to your pout ?? ⁠⁠

As we approach peri-menopause and menopause, the drop in Oestrogen actually reduces the thickness of both the dermis and epidermis in lip skin, further accelerating the effects of photo-ageing and everything described above…and this in addition to other structural changes in the face and jaw is why lips and the peri-oral region seem to age more rapidly (at a rather alarming rate😱) in the fifth decade. ⁠

It's World Menopause Day today and I wanted to take a moment to highlight the lips and why they need and deserve special care & love ⁠⁠

Hormones? Lips ? Is there a connection I hear you say? The answer is YES but so often the connection is forgotten or even dismissed. ⁠⁠

Peri-menopause and menopause are commonly associated with the following:⁠⁠
⁠⁠
- Dry lips & dry mouth, which not only is uncomfortable but also can lead to very dry dehydrated cracked lips ⁠⁠
⁠⁠
- Increased sensitivity to UV, with an elevated risk of burning in the sun & accelerated photo-ageing of the lips & peri-oral region⁠ all year round.⁠⁠
⁠⁠
- Accelerated loss of lip volume, thinning of the lip skin⁠, ⁠development of fine lines & wrinkles on the lips, lip line and peri-oral region⁠⁠.
⁠⁠
Depressing? A little - but here's the thing ......We can't stop ageing or the accelerating impact of plummeting oestrogen on this area but we CAN HELP and we can slow it down.⁠ Over the next few posts we will be exploring some of the ways to help (and what not to do!)⁠ in these key areas:⁠⁠

May is a time when we focus on Sun/UV awareness and it is important to realise that UV damage is cumulative, so the more unprotected skin is exposed over time, the more damage occurs. ⁠⁠
⁠⁠
We can see evidence of significant UV damage (the black spots) on the nose, forehead, cheeks, lips and lip line in the image. This damage is not visible to the naked eye but is seen very clearly via a special UV camera. ⁠⁠
⁠⁠
The lips (often forgotten), are incredibly vulnerable - the epidermis is only 6 cells thick, compared to the face which is 16 cells thick and this means the cells, and the collagen and elastin in the dermis are at significant risk of damage and degradation - leading to premature photo-ageing, fine lines, wrinkles and of course increased the risk of skin cancers. We know that UV significantly reduces the thickness of the dermis over time - so its never too early or too late to start protecting the lips and the face everyday (even on cloudy days!!!).⁠⁠
