RE-USING MODERNITY // Our contribution to the 2021 서울도시건축비엔날레 Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism "Crossroads : Building the Resilient City" directed by Dominique Perrault Architecture from September 16th to October 31st 2021 At a time of major environmental transformations (global warming, soil artificialization, decline in biodiversity) and to the extent that urban sprawl now leads us to consider architecture as a new geography, the reconciliation between nature and architecture has become one of the key levers in designing resilience. We could question the specificities of Modernity by focusing on the capacity of mutation and the reversibility of its architectural principles. Thus Pilotis, roof terraces, free plan or free façade and horizontal windows open up a range of perspectives for a new colonization by living organisms and their propagation above and under. In this reinterpretation of the iconic Maison Dom-Ino, the theoretical project imagined by Swiss architect Le Corbusier in 1914, we consider nature as part of architectural elements. As it was created by slow colonisation, a phenomenon of sedimentation reveals that the carrying capacity of infrastructure generates its own geography.
