After two amazing concerts this week in Athens and Amorgos, we end our beautiful Greek tour back in Athens at the Antiracist festival, tomorrow at 21:45!

🎶 Την τρίτη και τελευταία μέρα του Φεστιβάλ. Κυριακή 9/7 το Στο Άλσος Βεΐκου, το 24ο Αντιρατσιστικό Φεστιβάλ Αθήνας || άχνει ήχους της γειτονιάς μας. Ήχη από την Αρμενία, την Μέση Αντολή, τη Γαλλία, την Ελλάδα - ήχη που μπλέκονται μεταξύ τους και μας γεμίζουν συναισθήματά.

📣 Και εκεί μαζί μας θα είναι οι Collectif Medz Bazar

🔸 Οι Collectif Medz Bazar είναι ένα συγκρότημα της διασποράς που αποτελείται από μουσικούς αρμενικής, τουρκικής, γαλλικής και αμερικανικής καταγωγής. Αντλώντας από τις αντίστοιχες παραδόσεις τους και εκείνες των γειτονικών πολιτισμών, τα μέλη της κολεκτίβας δημιουργούν πρωτότυπες διασκευές παραδοσιακής μουσικής καθώς και δικές τους συνθέσεις.

Το Collectif Medz Bazar δημιουργήθηκε στο Παρίσι το 2012, έχει ταξιδέψει εκτενώς στην Ευρώπη και δίνει τακτικά παραστάσεις στη Βόρεια Αμερική και στη Μέση Ανατολή. Ένθερμοι λάτρεις των συγκεντρώσεων και των ανταλλαγών, άνετοι με όλα τα ακροατήρια, οι μουσικοί του Medz Bazar εμφανίζονται με τον ίδιο ενθουσιασμό σε μεγάλες πόλεις όπως η Νέα Υόρκη, το Ντιγιάρμπακιρ, το Μόντρεαλ, το Ερεβάν και το Βερολίνο, καθώς και σε απομακρυσμένα χωριά που φτάνουν από τα βουνά της Γαλλία μέχρι την κοιλάδα Μουνζουρ στην Ανατολία.

🎼 Είναι μεγάλη μας χαρά και τιμή που θα παίξουν για πρώτη φορά στην Αθήνα στο φετινό φεστιβάλ!

Si l'huile d'olive avec sa force et ses arômes était une musique, si les épices étaient des notes, et si tout ce qui nous vient de loin était là avec nous dans le présent en nous collant à la peau plus qu'au cerveau, alors, alors, alors ce serait un peu comme un concert de MEDZ BAZAR !

MEET THE COLLECTIVE - VAHAN 🎪

Vahan taught himself percussion and piano as a child, and always wrote music and lyrics. His songs invite to celebrate the uncomfortable: disillusionment, collective foolishness, transgression, growing up.

Owing to his musician parents, his musical world is deeply shaped by Armenian Folk, Troubadour and Liturgical repertoire, but also by the concerts and cassettes he grew up listening. Working regularly in projects involving theatre, dance, clown and bideo, Vahan loves talking to the audience and believes in giving a sense of ritual and communion to concerts.

MEET THE COLLECTIVE - EZGI 💘

Initially trained in singing and in Classical and Flamenco guitar, Ezgi started playing clarinet during her studies in Ankara, her hometown. Arriving in Paris, she studied Jazz music, and has formed several bands since.

Ezgi’s music reached one’s soul and takes the time to make one travel to new yet familiar places. She writes melodies and lyrics with candour and precision, and effortlessly embraces new sounds and tunes with her unique style, on clarinet or saxophone.

April 24, always.

More than a century passed, and still we commemorate, in pain, the genocide perpetrated by the Young Turk government against Armenians, Assyrians, Chaldeans and Greeks all over the Ottoman Empire.
Again and again we call for its recognition and reparation by the Turkish State and by civil society in Turkey. If history has been re-written by the Turkish Republic to legitimate its nationalist ideology, the whole century that followed has proven how destructive it is to cover a crime. More crimes were perpetrated. More peoples suffered. Turkey's problems only get worse by running away. Today, Armenians are more than ever threatened to disappear from their historic lands. Those who think this is good news are only celebrating a cult of hatred, a sad future for themselves and an irreversible impoverishment of their heritage. Sharing a motherland seems more than ever out of the question: each side expects the other to take the first step. Yet it is clear that we still haven't healed from this century-old crime. Armenians need to move on from being constant victims. Turks need to go beyond existential paranoia. Kurds, Armenians, Turks, Assyrians, need a motherland that includes all peoples, in absolute equality.

Our dream is beyond nationalities. We have faith in what music can achieve: it has no borders, it lives forever, it speaks to the hearts and souls, it belongs to everybody. May we build our future together, by healing, by speaking, by dreaming. By mourning and by facing reality.

"Aram and Virginia, an Armenian couple from the diaspora, transmit an ancestral tradition of chant which is in danger of disappearing to a troupe of European actors. During the process of creating a new play, the couple takes the company on a trip to Anatolia where the Armenian civilization has been destroyed.
Along the way, the questioning of the actors brings to the forefront the wealth of this culture: the chant becomes a language of creation and sharing, the breath of life.
An initiatory journey where the sounds, the music, the bodies and the cries impart a memory and a future."

MEET THE COLLECTIVE - SHUSHAN 🎼

Born in Paris to a family of musicians, Shushan Kerovpyan was immersed from early age into traditional Armenian and Middle Eastern music. She learned Armenian modal singing by oral transmission.
As a bassist with soul and jazz influences, Shushan sings in a variety of languages, from English to Ladino, from Spanish to Kurdish, from Greek to French.

RENCONTRE LE COLLECTIF - MARIUS PIBAROT 👑

Marius a commencé par jouer du violon dans la musique classique et le jazz, plus t**d il découvre le bluegrass et et bien d'autres styles différents. Il a étudié la batterie, la contrebasse, la mandoline et le violoncelle... C'est un globe-trotter qui a développé une variété de styles à travers ses nombreux voyages et collaborations : c'est pourquoi en plus de parler rapidement une nouvelle langue, Marius la chantera 🤯

Depuis octobre 2021, il joue également avec son propre groupe appelé Marius and the Needs.

JOUONS : le premier qui trouve le nombre exact de langues parlées par Marius gagne sa place à notre prochain concert près de chez lui !! (répondez dans les commentaires + si vous trouvez les langues, vous recevrez un câlin de Marius)

MEET THE COLLECTIVE - MARIUS PIBAROT 👑

Marius started with playing the violin in classical music and jazz, then started playing bluegrass and many other different styles. He later studied drums, double bass, mandolin and cello.. He is a globe-trotter who developed a variety of styles through his many travels and collaborations : that's why Marius will pick up any other language and not only speak it, but also soon enough sing in it.

Since October 2021 he plays with his own band called Marius and the needs which features amazing musicians.

LET'S PLAY 😉😁 : the first one who finds the exact number of languages spoken by Marius wins his.her place at our next concert near his home !! (reply in the comments + if you find the langages you get a hug from Marius)

We were honored to conclude the evening of support to our friend Pınar Selek by playing 3 songs, in Turkish, Armenian and Kurdish yesterday.

Sociologist, writer, teacher-researcher at the University of Nice and activist, Pinar is an important figure in the struggle for women, minorities, the LGBT+ community in Turkey, and all around the world now.

Tomorrow is the day of her trial in Turkey (despite 4 acquittals) for an attack that she did not commit in, 25 years ago.

She suffered physical torture, and continues to suffer psychological torture since 25 years now. She is now exiled since 15 years.
And she is still a sunshine for many many of us, and for people struggling for human rights.

We are with her, and we are many.
