What about the GONON vineyard ? 🍇

Coming from a peasant family, Pierre Gonon owned a few plots of vines on the Gonon estate at the beginning of the 20th century. Like many families of the time, the agricultural worker lived on polyculture, especially fruit and vegetables. His son Émile, war interested in the land, works in the administration and lets the vineyards of the Gonon estate decline. Only a parcel of aged vines remained when his descendant, Pierre Gonon, decided to resuscitate the vineyard in the 1950s. Aged 15, the wine worker strived for the first years to replant the vines, then vinify and sell his wines. in trading. In 1964, Pierre Gonon and his wife acquired a plot of land conducive to the production of white wine. The white Saint-Joseph, then not very popular with the trading houses, pushed the winemaker to produce the first cuvée of the estate. The couple's children, Pierre and Jean, came to support them at the Gonon estate in 1988. The two brothers worked hand in hand and ended up settling permanently in the family property. In 1990, they wanted to change the agricultural method. They grass their vines, then in 2004 they bought the equipment needed to work the soil on the hillsides. They follow the organic specifications and certify the Gonon estate in 2010.

What about this OWC6 of Chateau COUTET 1953 ? 🗝

▪️ First built as a fortress, Château Coutet still bears the stamp of its medieval origins. The square tower with its battlements, located in the centre of the courtyard, is typical of military constructions of the time. The chapel and two other towers show how the estate evolved during the 18th century. The history of Château Coutet as a winemaking estate starts in 1643, when Charles Le Guérin, known as Lord of Coutet, made it one of the first vineyards in the Sauternes appellation. The estate remained in the hands of his descendants until 1788.

▪️ Thomas Jefferson was also a wine merchant and wrote travel diaries from great French wine-producing regions. A man of good sense, he acknowledged Château Coutet as "the best Sauternes in Barsac."

▪️ Following a number of informal rankings, the 1855 classification ordered by Napoleon III was issued for the Universal Exposition. It officially recognised Château Coutet as one of the Classified First Growths of the Sauternes and Barsac appellations, alongside the finest wines from the Médoc and Graves regions.

▪️ Gabriel-Barthelemy Romain de Filhot acquired Château Coutet just before the French Revolution. After those troubled times, the estate passed to his grandson, Marquis Romain-Bertrand de Lur-Saluces. Also the owner of Châteaux d'Yquem, de Fargues, Filhot and de Malle, he was the largest producer of sweet white wine in the world at the time. Château Coutet remained in the family until the 1920s.

▪️ Henry-Louis Guy, an industrialist from Lyon, acquired Château Coutet in the 1920s. The famous and unrivalled Guy & Mittal hydraulic presses, still in use, stand as a memento of his time there, holding the secret to the extraction of juice from the estate’s best grapes. His daughter, who later married Edmond Rolland, managed the estate until 1977. The tradition of an exceptional wine in her honour, the Cuvée Madame, persists to this day.

▪️ Marcel Baly and two of his sons, Philippe and Dominique, became the new owners of Château Coutet in 1977.

What about Latour à Pomerol ? 🗝

This legend which draws its name from the tower that adorns this charming château, was acquired by Mme Loubat, who also owned Château Petrus, in 1917. Etablissements Jean-Pierre Moueix has farmed the vineyard since 1962.

The vineyard is characterised by the diversity of its soils, which brings complexity and harmony to the wine: gravel and clay for a marvellous parcel next to the church of Pomerol; loam surrounding the château.

The vineyard receives the same care applied to all the J.P. Moueix properties: leaf-thinning and green-harvesting to allow for optimal grape maturity followed by a manual harvest. The wine ferments in concrete vats before being aged in oak barrels.

Château Latour à Pomerol is known for producing generous, concentrated wines that strike a perfect balance between elegance and power.

LATOUR À POMEROL 1959 : 96/100 Robert PARKER
"Dark garnet with an amber edge, the 1959 Latour reveals a touch of volatile acidity in the nose, along with aromas of melted caramel, to***co, and jammy red and black fruits. As the wine sat in the glass, notes of minerals, coffee, spice, and underbrush emerged. There is still copious tannin in the finish (I am not sure it will ever be fully resolved), but this sumptuous, complex, fragrant, super-rich Latour cuts a broad swath across the palate. Fully mature, it is best consumed over the next decade."
