BlueRevolution project
Biodiversity underestimation in our bLUe planEt: artificial intelligence REVOLUTION in benthic taxon
Are you in Brest on Saturday September 16?
We meet at 2 p.m. at 70.8 Brest at Les Capucins to discover the infinitely small be to its seams!
More informations here 👇
The BlueRev team is meeting today to take stock of the progress of the project and the work to come.
🔴 Meioscool - in live !
This is the end! Meioscool 2023 is now finished.
This year we train 20 meio-students!
Thanks to la Aula de la mar de Palma to welcoming us during this week.
Thanks to Pedro (Sekenberg, Germany), Nuria, Diego, Alberto y Marta (universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain) for their participation and meiofauna expertise.
See you next year for a new meio-training!
🔴 Meioscool - in live !
Last day of Meioscool training!
This morning we talk about genetic, imagery datas and outreach!
We also take time to exchange during a open discussion.
🔴 Meioscool - in live !
This afternoon, identifications by binocular continue.
Students were also able to discover the Curiosity mini field microscope. This pocket-sized microscope allows real observations and image acquisition! The students then discovered different image annotation tools such as EcoTaxa and Biigle.

🔴 Meioscool - in live !
A great video of kinorhynca ! 😍
🔴 Meioscool - in live !
On this Thursday morning, 2 practical sessions are offered. A session consists of continuing the sorting of samples. But this time by focusing the identifications on kinorhynca, nematodes and why not on loricifera and tardigrades!
During the other parallel session, participants test copepoda’s synthetic image generation method. This practical work aims to feed developments in artificial intelligence.
🔴 Meioscool - in live !
Today, morning of sorting the samples collected for the meioscool. The sorting session was focused on the sorting and recognition of Foraminifera.
🔴 Meioscool - in live !
The program for this afternoon? 👉 Parallel sessions!
On the one hand a presentation and a discussion workshop on the functional traits of nematodes and copepods. And on the other hand the sorting of the samples taken this morning!
🔴 Meioscool - in live !
In the second part of the morning, a sampling by boat in the Bay of Palma was carried out. Sediment at 30m depth was collected by a dredge.
We will analyse samples this afternoon during practice session.
🔴 Meioscool - in live !
This morning the group of 18 meioscool participants was divided into small groups to participate in different workshops.
One of the groups starts the day by sampling meiofauna at the beach to complete the samples taken by the team from the University of Madrid.
🔴 Meioscool - in live !
Today, first day at meioscool. This day is dedicated to several theoretical courses to go through different taxa in detail. Participants will learn all about nematodes, foraminifera, copepoda, tantulocarida, polycheates, loricifera and kinorhynca.
🔴 Meioscool - in live !
Meioscool 2023 is starting now !
❓ What kind of animals can be found in the sand ❓
🔎 Zoom in on a sample of meiofauna taken on a beach in Baleares.
Can you see and identify them?
📍 Sampling in Baleares ? For what?
The objective of sampling in the Balearic Islands is to study the anthropogenic impact on the meiofauna. In Ibiza, we therefore sampled sediment cores on 3 more or less impacted beaches, at 0 cm, 30 cm and 2 m from the edge of the beach. We also sampled further offshore, on board a zodiac, at around 15m depth, using a dredge.
👆 This series of samples was produced in collaboration with the University Complutense de Madrid.
💡 In addition to carrying out an impact study, these samples will feed the dataset for the BlueRev project and carry out more tests in the sample analysis process.
Universidad Complutense de Madrid
Sampling continues today! What purpose? Answer tomorrow! 😁
📍Leave the sun of Brest for that of the balearic islands !
The BlueRev team flew for a 15-day mission to the Balearic Islands. What is the program? Well, 2 days of sampling in Ibiza by boat and at the beach, then 1 week of Meioscool, and finally BlueRev meetings!
Jan Macher on Twitter “Fantastic colloquium today with and from ! The Blue Revolution Project is developing tools to study and monitor marine benthic diversity. Cool innovations in , and research”
❗️Dear meio community ❗️
Following a withdrawal, we have a place available to attend the Meioscool 2023. This includes:
* Access to the conferences/laboratories
* Social dinner (26/06)
* Accommodation in shared room (check-in 25/06, check-out 30/06, The Boc Hostels City, Palma)
* Sampling activities (including boarding on IMEDEA boat) on 27 and 28/06
‼️ Could you please share this information in your labs and networks, this is a last chance for a young scientist to attend the Meioscool this year!
👉 If you or any contact is interested we need a quick reply to arrange logictics. Note that the first respondent will be selected!
✌️ Feel free to contact us for any question at [email protected]

🔬 Pupils in a fifth form class at the Victoire-Daubié secondary school in Plouzané (France) have embarked on a participatory science project. In collaboration with BlueRevolution project team and Océanopolis, they will participate in the study of meiofauna, as part of the Researcher at School program.
👉 Today they had a practical work in biology class to observe the meiofauna present in a sand sample. A few days earlier the students had taken sand from Minou beach to study the meiofauna.
Thanks to their binocular loupes and the Curiosity microscope, they were able to observe the fauna present in their samples. Their goal was to recognize the different taxa and count the number of individuals!

📍 Last night, the BlueRev team was at BEACH BREAK (Santec, Finistère, France) to present the project and introduce the meiofauna to the science-hungry public during the Pint of Science - Roscoff 🍻 event!
The public has discovered the unsuspected life of grains of sand and also has a clearer view of Artificial Intelligence!
Thanks to the organizers and to the Beach Break.
📍 To live happily, let us live hidden!
Do you live in Finistère (France)? Are you free on the evening of Tuesday 23 May?
Meet the BlueRev team at Pint of Science!
➡️ Doors open at 7pm

🔬 Focus on !
Scanning electron microscopy of a benthic copepod isolated from a core of Roscoff sediment taken last August. Mathilde Bénard, an intern on the BlueRevolution project, has observed on numerous occasions a colonisation of the entire surface of the copepods by epizoic diatoms of the genus Grammatophora or Protoraphis. The observation of the interior of the frustule will tell us more soon...!

Please feel free to spread this information in your networks and to interested students !
📰 An article talking about BlueRev !
The article “Meiofauna - the ocean’s next frontier”appeared yesterday on the eurobioimaging website! Valentin Foulon, BlueRev project engineer, tells you more about the progress on the project!
👇 To read the article go to the following link!
Euro Bioimaging The European Research Infrastructure for Imaging Technologies in Biological and Biomedical Sciences
This morning, Valentin Foulon presented BlueRev project during Marine Imaging Workshop 2022, at Océanopolis, Brest.
Last friday the BlueRev team presented the project and its progress in research at the European night of researchers in Oceanopolis! We presented meiofauna but also deepfake images.
The purpose of the deepfake is to create a bank of fake images of meiofauna individuals to increase the image dataset. this will make it possible to test and validate the image processing technique for sorting fauna by image.
Visitors were delighted!
Have you submitted yr for the 18th International Conf? Keynotes incl. One day left!!!
