Recently we spoke about continuity of equipment from small batch size through to large scale production. The importance of this cannot ever be underestimated. When we're talking about using a rotor stator for homogenising instead of hand stirring or a stick mixer, aside from the difference in skinfeel, stability of product and particle size reduction it is also about process. If you make a product by hand as a small batch you quite simply cannot replicate this for larger batches. When your process alters, so will your end product. When you scale, so many variables come into play not least of which can include the cooldown process taking MUCH MUCH longer than that for small batches. If you are wanting your product to be replicable for scale it is best to ensure your process is the same.

We love seeing our equipment used to help solve a problem 💜. Anne's problem is her clients love her products so much she needed to innovate to go from small batch to a much larger batch and quickly (not a bad problem to have 😉). Here Anne from The Zapy Store is trialling a 10kg batch using a bain marie with her Misceo 300P. Given the results there is no doubt this temporary trial setting will move to her permanent space in no time at all. Beeswax can be quite the unsung hero in cosmetics. It is a natually occuring product which has many beneficial properties for cosmetic products. It offers emollient properties which can assist in softening and soothing the skin, its occlusive properties may help to minimise TEWL (transepidermal water loss), it can help lock in hydration and is also used as a thickener, emulsifier or stiffening material across a range of cosmetics.

Why is this important?

All of our rotor stators from the 250 range through to the 2200 range are designed and manufactured to the same exacting standards meaning that from an equipment point of view, the homogenisation process is the same whether you are processing a 100mL batch or a 100L batch. This means that when scaling, there is one less thing that can potentially impact your resulting product.

Sweet Almond Oil (prunus amygdalus dulcis) is a great 'all-rounder oil' with it's main chemical components being Oleic acid, Linoleic acid, Stearic acid and Palmitic acid.

Sweet Almond oil is derived from, you guessed it, Sweet Almonds, while Almond Oil is derived from Bitter Almonds.

What do these chemical components mean? They mean that Sweet Almond Oil is great for nourishing, moisturising, calming and soothing. It is not only great for skincare but also in hair products.

Our new tool spotlight this week is on the Dissolver/Dispersion tool which can fulfil medium-high shear requirements.

Features include:
• Medium/High Shear
• Medium to High Speed
• Low Viscosity
• Radial Flow

The Dissolver/Dispersion Tool with medium/high shear is used at a medium to high speed in low viscosity fluids to reduce particle size and break down agglomeration (clumping of particles forming a mass). With a radial flow (drawing from both the top and the bottom) this medium/high shear tool creates high turbulence and is ideal for particle fragmentation and dispersion. Ideal in low viscosity for dissolution of powders, homogenous pigment dispersion and use with materials that are not shear sensitive. Once particle reduction and agglomeration break down has been achieved you may choose to continue with a lower shear tool such as the Turbo Agitator Tool, the Anchor Stirrer or the Spiral Stirrer for the remainder of your product.

As with the anchor stirrer, this tool is currently available with the 'foot' attached for the 250 and 300 models however will soon be available as a separate interchangeable head, meaning one 'foot' multiple tools. Could not ask for more than that.

How lovely and shiny does she look? 😍🎇

One of our new tools in the 'medium shear' range. An anchor stirrer is an extremely useful tool for any formulator.
Features include:
• Low/Medium Shear
• Low Speed
• High Viscosity
• Tangential Flow

The Anchor Stirrer is used at a low speed in high viscosity fluids. With a tangential flow (moving fluid horizontally around the vessel) the Anchor Stirrer will not break/damage sensitive materials and is ideal for the distribution of high mineral content in fluids. Suitable for emulsions, suspensions, gels, colour cosmetics. Can be used with products that contain large particles or beads that you do not want to be broken. With little vertical flow you may also use the anchor stirrer at low speed for surfactant formulations (shampoos, body washes etc).

The anchor tool is available right now with the 'foot' unit for the 250 and 300 motor blocks, however for those who already have a Turbo Agitator Tool, this attachment will be available soon as a separate interechangeable 'head'. Stay tuned for that.
