Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects millions of people worldwide, significantly impacting their health and quality of life. This disease occurs when the body either does not produce enough insulin or cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a vital hormone that regulates blood sugar levels, and without it, glucose builds up in the blood, leading to various health complications.

Managing diabetes effectively involves a combination of lifestyle changes and medical interventions. Regular physical activity, a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and maintaining a healthy weight are essential for managing blood sugar levels. Monitoring blood glucose levels regularly and following prescribed medication regimens, including insulin therapy for those who need it, are also crucial.

Diabetes can lead to severe complications if not managed properly, including heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, vision problems, and nerve damage. Among these complications, foot health is particularly vulnerable due to poor circulation and nerve damage, which can result in infections, ulcers, and even amputations. Therefore, regular foot care, including daily inspections, proper footwear, and regular visits to a podiatrist, is vital for those with diabetes.

The Information Leaflet and After-Care Pack below is designed specifically for patients with diabetes. This resource provides valuable insights and practical tips to help you manage your condition and maintain healthy feet 👇👇👇

📢 Legs Matter Week: Focus on Treating Shin Splints 🦵🏃‍♂️

Shin splints can be a common but painful condition, especially for runners, dancers, and athletes. With the right treatment plan, we can help you recover and prevent injuries from recurring.

🏃‍♂️Shin splints, or medial tibial stress syndrome, cause pain along the inner edge of the shinbone (tibia). This condition often results from overuse or repetitive stress on the shinbone and the connective tissues that attach muscles to the bone.

Symptoms:
☑Tenderness, soreness, or pain along the inner side of your shinbone.
☑Mild swelling.
☑Pain that worsens with physical activity.

🦶 Comprehensive Treatment Plan for Shin Splints
1. Rest and Modify Activity
☑ Rest: Give your legs a break from activities that cause pain.
☑ Modify Activity: Switch to low-impact exercises like swimming or cycling to maintain fitness without stressing your shins.

3. Biomechanics Assessment
☑ Identifies abnormal movements that contribute to shin splints, allowing us to recommend changes to your running or walking technique to prevent future injuries.

4. Orthotics
☑ Improve foot and leg alignment, providing better support and reducing stress on your shins. Orthotics can correct biomechanics issues and distribute pressure more evenly.

5. Laser Therapy- Acute Stage- within 6 weeks of injury
☑ Reduces pain and inflammation, accelerates tissue repair, and promotes faster recovery.

6. If pain does not settle down within 3 months, then consider:
☑ Shockwave Therapy
Stimulates blood flow and cell regeneration, promoting faster healing of the damaged tissues in your shins.

7. Strengthening and Stretching Exercises
☑ Focus on exercises that strengthen the muscles around your shins, calves, and ankles.
☑ Incorporate daily stretching routines to improve flexibility and reduce tension in the lower legs.

Share your experiences and recovery stories with us! Have questions? Drop them in the comments below or send us a message. Here’s to healthy and strong legs!

Happy World Bicycle Day to all cycling enthusiasts! As a podiatrist, I am thrilled to join in celebrating this wonderful day dedicated to the joy and benefits of biking. Cycling is not just a fun and eco-friendly activity; it also offers numerous health benefits, particularly for your feet and overall lower body health.

🚴‍♀️Unlike running, cycling is a low-impact exercise that reduces the risk of injury to your feet, ankles, and knees. It’s an excellent option for those with arthritis or other joint issues.

🚴‍♀️Regular cycling enhances blood circulation in your legs and feet, helping to prevent conditions like varicose veins and peripheral artery disease.

🚴‍♀️Cycling works out various muscle groups in your legs and feet, including the calves, hamstrings, and quadriceps. Stronger muscles provide better support for your feet and ankles, reducing the risk of injuries.

🚴‍♀️Maintaining a healthy weight is crucial for foot health, as excess weight can put additional strain on your feet. Cycling is an effective way to burn calories and manage your weight.

For those who require additional support, orthotics can play a significant role in enhancing your cycling experience:

📣Orthotics offer additional arch support, which can help distribute pressure evenly across your feet, reducing the risk of pain and injury.

📣They help in maintaining proper foot alignment, which is crucial for preventing overuse injuries and ensuring efficient pedalling.

📣By cushioning your feet, orthotics can reduce the impact on your feet and enhance overall comfort during long rides.

If you’re experiencing foot pain while cycling, it is essential to seek professional help. We specialise in diagnosing and treating foot conditions, ensuring you can enjoy your rides without discomfort.

Don’t let foot pain keep you from enjoying your cycling adventures. Book an appointment today, and let’s get you back on track to pain-free riding.

Heel pain can be more than just a minor inconvenience. Getting a professional assessment is crucial, and here’s why:

👣 Heel pain can result from various issues, not just plantar fasciitis. An assessment ensures that plantar fasciitis is correctly identified and not mistaken for other conditions like bursitis, Achilles tendinopathy, or stress fractures.
👣Different conditions require different treatments. A professional diagnosis ensures you receive the most effective treatment tailored to your condition.
👣Without proper treatment, plantar fasciitis for example, can become chronic and lead to further complications, such as persistent heel pain, altered gait, or additional foot, knee, or back problems. Early assessment and intervention can prevent these issues.
👣An accurate diagnosis allows for effective pain management strategies. This can include a combination of rest, ice, laser therapy, orthotics (https://www.gmtembed.com) and specific exercises. Shockwave therapy is another option but should not be used with anti-inflammatory medications as they can interfere with the healing process promoted by shockwave therapy.

At Quantum Footcare we can provide you with essential advice on lifestyle modifications, exercise routines, and footwear choices to help manage the condition and prevent recurrence.

Don’t ignore heel pain! Schedule an assessment to ensure you are on the right path to recovery. Your feet will thank you! 🦶✨

Toe Brachial Pressure Index (TBPI)

The toe brachial pressure index, or TBPI for short, is a simple test we use to check the blood flow to your toes. It's kind of like checking your blood pressure, but instead of using a cuff on your arm, we use a small cuff on your toe.

During the test, we'll measure the blood pressure in your toe and compare it to the blood pressure in your arm. This helps us understand how well your blood is flowing to your feet and toes.

Having good blood flow to your toes is important because it means they're getting enough oxygen and nutrients to stay healthy. If the blood flow is reduced, it could be a sign of a condition called Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD), which means the arteries in your legs aren't working as well as they should.

By doing this test, we can get a better idea of how well your blood is circulating to your feet and toes, and if there are any issues, we can take steps to address them and keep you healthy.

Did you know that:

Shockwave therapy originated from lithotripsy, a medical procedure used to break down kidney stones without invasive surgery.
📣 In the late 1960s and early 1970s, researchers in Switzerland and Germany began exploring the use of shockwaves for this purpose.
📣On 07 February 1980 the first treatment of kidney stones in a human was carried out at the University hospital of Munich, Grosshadern.
📣In the early 1990s, shockwave therapy started gaining attention in the field of orthopedics as a potential treatment for musculoskeletal conditions. It was then used primarily for the treatment of conditions such as plantar fasciitis and heel spurs. It was also explored as a treatment for tendon and soft tissue injuries.
📣Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, numerous clinical trials and research studies were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of shockwave therapy for various orthopedic conditions 👇

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/339550037_Efficacy_of_Extracorporeal_Shock_Wave_Therapy_for_Achilles_Tendinopathy_A_Meta-analysis

These studies examined its use in treating conditions such as Achilles tendonitis, tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis), calcific shoulder tendinitis, and other musculoskeletal disorders.

In the field of sports medicine, shockwave therapy became increasingly popular as a non-invasive treatment option for athletes with chronic injuries or overuse conditions.

The 10g monofilament testing is a method used to assess the sensation in the feet of patients, particularly those with conditions like diabetes.
During the test, the monofilament is applied to various points of your foot to assess your ability to sense pressure. If you can feel the pressure from the monofilament, this indicates intact sensation in that area of the foot. This is crucial in diabetic patients who may suffer from peripheral neuropathy, a condition where nerve damage can lead to decreased sensation in the extremities.
Early detection of neuropathy through tests like the 10g monofilament testing can help prevent complications such as foot ulcers and amputations.

Are you tired of dealing with the discomfort and embarrassment caused by verrucae?

In many cases, verrucae will disappear of their own accord within 2 years and therefore if it is painless no treatment is required. Letting nature heal the verruca is the best and safest course of action.

However, in the case of those painful, unsightly verrucae, or ones which are spreading, you may choose to seek professional help.

Our needling treatment targets verrucae at their core, effectively breaking down the tissue and stimulating the body's natural healing response for lasting results. This process effectively eliminates the wart from within, leaving behind smooth, healthy skin.

Nail surgery for a Total Nail Plate Avulsion, performed this week at the clinic.

This is a common procedure that podiatrists perform to treat various nail conditions that may not respond to conservative treatments.

In this particular procedure, the entire nail was removed and the nail matrix was treated with a chemical to prevent regrowth.

Nail surgery can effectively address a number of nail disorders but is typically considered a last resort when conservative treatments have failed.

The most common nail problem needing nail surgery is a recurrent ingrowing toenail. However, other conditions such as severe fungal nail infections, paronychia (inflammation of the nail fold), thickening and deformity of the nails or even nails that may have suffered from a traumatic injury may also benefit from nail surgery.

If you are struggling with painful ingrowing toenails or other bothersome nail conditions and are wondering whether nail surgery may be beneficial for you, please contact us on 0161 383 8301.
