Grief can hit us especially hard at times like Christmas. So many of us have lost people we love, and the festive period can be a difficult reminder they're no longer here.

It's okay to miss loved ones.
It's okay to not feel 'festive’.
It's okay if you want some space.

We all heal differently. Do what works for you and helps you on your grief journey.

“I stay home for me. I was first diagnosed with lobular breast cancer in 2011. After surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and hormone therapy, I’ve been disease-free for nine years. But after routine checks, I found out on 2nd January this year that the cancer has returned in the mammary nodes and my pelvis. There’s never a good time to receive this news, but this coincided with the final stages of planning my daughter’s wedding, which was due to take place on 3rd April. Then coronavirus struck! By last Monday we could see that the wedding was unlikely to take place as planned. We also had the added worry that if we postponed everything for six months, I don’t know how my health will be. Instead, we took the decision to bring the ceremony forward and postpone the reception. On Saturday, in a very intimate ceremony with only five guests, I got to see my beautiful daughter get married! I want to be there for the reception later this year.” Thank you to Susan for sharing why she’s staying at home. Who are you staying home for? Let us know in the comments.

“Max’s world has been turned upside down, but he tries to keep a smile on his face.”

Max, who is aged seven, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) in May 2023. He has started his treatment with three different types of chemotherapy and multiple hospital admissions.

His mum, Laura, says, “His bravery keeps us going. He makes us so proud. Thank you for the Star Award pack for Max and the certificate for his brother Ronnie – it was great to open after a difficult time.”

Read our latest patient blog: Ruth Hall thought that following a kidney cancer diagnosis it was best to take the option offered to her from her MDT (multidisciplinary team) not to remove her infected kidney. But she was purseded by family members to seek a second opinion, something that changed the course of her life.

“You never think it is going to be you and a lot of my friends have said to me that my experience has taught them to be a lot more vigilant. If there's one thing I can take out of this experience, it's being able to make people aware as I didn't know what lymphoma was and what to look out for. That’s why I feel it is so important for me to share my story to raise awareness about the signs and symptoms of lymphoma – particularly in younger people who, like myself, may not have even heard of it before.

“I completed my course of chemotherapy in February and now, six months on, I feel a lot more like myself and that my spark for life is back again. I have also recently completed my CPID Human resources qualification which I started before I was diagnosed. I refused to let cancer take over my life, and I was determined to complete it. Now I am looking forward to my graduation next year. I am also proud to have held some fundraising events for Lymphoma Action, knowing that they will help to support more people affected by lymphoma.”
