A-Z of me has now reached the letter U!

U is for University 📚

I went to the University of Gloucestershire back in 2010 and studied Performing Arts for 2 years, playing some amazing roles in shows (such as Amy Dorrit in Little Dorrit) and gaining a Distinction Foundation Degree in 2012 📜

I actually went against what my teachers (except my drama teacher) and career advisors told me I should be doing with my life.

So many times they told me “Don’t do Performing Arts… and you shouldn’t do your backup of Creative Writing or Drama either… why don’t you consider doing something in science or maths?” 🙄 not taking into account that science and maths were my weakest subjects 🤦🏻‍♀️

I decided then that they didn’t know me and what I wanted for my life and went ahead with PA anyway… and I’m glad I did!

It’s paved the way for my career now, and I wouldn’t be teaching if I hadn’t done it.

Sometimes you just need to go against what everyone tells you and go with your heart and gut!! 💜

A-Z of Me carries on with T for Teaching 👩🏻‍🏫

Truth is, I never set out to be a teacher. In fact, at one point, I was adamant that I would NEVER teach.

However, being given the chance to teach in 2019 (on what was meant to be on a temporary basis), showed me that I could do it and actually found it rewarding.

Fast forward 5 years and I’m still enjoying it, having grown from singing teacher to now musical theatre and dance. Yes there are difficult days, but seeing the students excel and grow in confidence is such a great feeling 🙂

A-Z of Me continues with S for Singing 🎵

I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember and was always told I had a big voice for such a tiny person 😂

But it hasn’t always been sunshine and roses…

I was doing Performing Arts at Uni, building up my vocal technique, power and making my voice the best it could be. It was going fantastically until 2011.

In the winter I felt ill, with a massively sore throat. It got worse and I got checked for suspected tonsillitis but it came back clear.

Over the first 4 months of 2012, I steadily got worse but doctors kept telling me it was nothing and I’d recover. It took me being in so much pain (my throat felt as though it was being ripped to shreds by broken glass and razor blades 😖), a soaring internal temp of 43 degrees C, and being delirious (among other awful symptoms) to finally be diagnosed with chronic laryngitis - not only that but the doctor I saw said it was the worst case of laryngitis she had ever seen! 😟 (not surprising when it had built up over 4 months!)

If I hadn’t got diagnosed and continued talking/whispering, I was told that I would lose the ability to sing altogether due to permanent damage.

12 years later, and a lot of hard work to rehab my voice, I can finally say that it is in a place I am very happy with! Yes, the tone, range and timbre of my voice has changed quite a lot, but I’m adapting and learning to love my new singing voice 🎤

Answer is, it’s completely up to you! Personal preference is a massive factor in which fragrances you have in each room of your house.
