{disclaimer - I told my son not to be cutting his nails so short! 🥴}

Pushing back the cuticles and removing the excess dead skin from the nail plates makes them look tidy & clean. It also makes the nails look longer & healthier.

Also this is the key step for nail enhancements to last longer & gives them something to stick to (once all removed & etched) you'll find the products lift if they are applied to the dead skin that isn't removed from the plates so causing products to lift, chip & break.
