Over the year from March 2023- February 2024 there were 2,430 redundancies confirmed in Northern Ireland.

This was over two and a half times the figure we seen in the previous year.

In the face of economic pressures and uncertainty we’re seeing an increasing number of Northern Irish organisations being forced to make the difficult decision to make large-scale redundancies. While it’s a massive undertaking it’s really important that businesses make this decision in the most practical way possible.

In case you missed it- Australia has passed a new law giving workers the right to ignore work communication that comes in outside of working hours 📣

It’s therefore up to the employee if they decide they want to ignore and refuse to respond to any out of hours contact that they deem unreasonable.

What approach should organisations take?

A recent report published by the CIPD found that remote working has resulted in employees’ connection with the purpose of their organisation falling by 21%. At the same time managers abilities to effectively lead their teams is also reportedly down by 18%.

However, the same report also found that 53% organisations who offer hybrid working say they are able to recruit a more diverse workforce, and that the attraction and retention of talent is up 61%.

The positives that working from home and hybrid working bring to both the employee and organisation cannot be denied, but the negatives should not be ignored.

It’s International Dog Day!

A day dedicated to our four-legged pals is fantastic, but what’s that got to do with HR you may ask…?

Well, at Think People we love any excuse to showcase our furry friends…

However, with lots of businesses following hybrid working models, sometimes our dogs become an extended part of our team. Whether that’s through an impromptu appearance on a teams call, a coffee break buddy or simply responding to us “thinking out loud”, our dogs really do hear it all.

There has also been an increasing trend in workplaces to bring your dog to work too. We’ve worked with businesses who dedicate a single day to bringing in dogs to those who encourage it whenever suits. Of course this only works when the entire team in the office can be around dogs, but if they can there are benefits to doing so.

According to a report from Purina Human-Animal Bond Studies a few years back, employees who often take their dogs into work report a 22% higher satisfaction with working conditions. Any increase in employee satisfaction is always a winner in our book.

Happy retirement Anne Dougan!

Today we’re saying goodbye to our co-founder Anne.

Anyone who has had the pleasure of working with her will know just how lucky we’ve been to have Anne. With her extensive HR knowledge and unflappable approach to working she has consistently delivered amazing results for our clients. She has also continuously supported our people to be their best selves.

After 17 years at Think People we celebrated all that Anne has achieved with a party and waved her goodbye as she she jets off around the world as the first part of her well-deserved retirement.

Commenting on her retirement Anne said “I have had the privilege to work with some fantastic and talented people and have enjoyed the journey we have been on so far. Our business is left in great hands with Emer and the team for the next stage of that journey. I have no doubt that we will go onto enjoy even more success, which I look forward to watching unfold.”
