Light pollution: Huge fall in stars that can be seen with naked eye 22/01/2023

LED lights create more light pollution than previous sodium lights. Therefore wise use of lighting may help us to enjoy more of the night-sky and benefit nocturnal wildlife too. By keeping gardens dark at night rather than illuminating these spaces we see and enjoy nature above us and wildlife also benefits.

Litter-picking alongside the River Tweed. It was lovely talking to folk who share a love of nature and interest in protecting the local environment and its wildlife.

Greener Berwick on Twitter “Litter-picking walk along the River Tweed from Coronation Park to top of Askew Walk. Dozens of drinks cans and at least a dozen dog-poo bags along riverside mostly thrown over walls and fences. Also, lovely conversations with folk on their walks including some delightful dogs.”

Greener Berwick on Twitter 04/01/2023

Litter is a big problem in Berwick. While groups and individuals do a lot to reduce this issue in the town the amount of litter, especially dog-poo bags, is a big problem. While there’s no magic solution , what could we do to tackle this? Maybe a few more bins? Or bigger penalty notices? What do you think?

Greener Berwick on Twitter “Walk along the River Tweed at Berwick is full of litter and discarded dog-poo bags, when bins are located at different points along the river, at the top of Askew Walk, in Coronation Park and so on. , there must be a way to tackle this illegal behaviour.”

. On environmental grounds alone, the plan to re-locate Berwick Middle School and develop the existing site will ramp up carbon emissions and increase the volume of traffic. Northumberland County Council and Berwick Town Council must take the lead in greening the town.

Greener Berwick on Twitter “Berwick Middle School is perfect location for young people to enjoy nature with minimal exposure to vehicle . The site is also important for wildlife. Rumours of new housing development will destroy this and increase volume of pollution traffic and ramp up emissions.”
