๐ฑ Striped ecru cotton cushion cover woven in pedal loom ๐พ
Minimalist cushion cover with striped design. The neutral design allows this cushion to fit easily in most rooms and balancing the decoration. The craftsmanship portrays a sense of rooting and balance. To achieve the neutral tones of the final design, the cotton was not dyed but left with its natural tone. The closure on the back is a hidden zipper.
WHO MADE MY CUSHION COVER?
This cushion cover was made by Jesus or one of his family members working at their shop very close to the beaches of Huatulco in Oaxaca, Mexico. They take 1 day to make the whole woven cloth in the pedal loom, and take 1 more day to cut the cushions, sew and add finishing details like zippers.
๐๐ป SWIPE right to see the final patterns woven line by line shaped with the different colour yarns. Isn't it gorgeous?
The 8 cushion covers I sourced for you were made in machines like this one: a pedal loom.
These machines have foot pedals ๐ฆถ๐ป used for weaving wool, cotton, and silk fabrics, and could become anything: clothes ๐, table runners, rugs, or your cushion covers!
With these, the weavers run line by line making all kinds of shapes and designs that could be created with several yarn ๐งถ colours.
Now with the yarns in different colours, they can start weaving cloths in the pedal loom shaping their designs line by line.
๐ฏ What an amazing technique right?
SOLD ๐ฏWoven yellow cotton cushion cover with loops and tassels๐ป
Cushion cover in deep yellow colour with small loops on striped design. It has tassels in its 4 corners and a zipper closure on the back. The artisan explored more innovative designs for these cushion covers, to adapt to the modern market. The colour is a deep earthy yellow that reminds me of the Mexican sunflower or the yellow walls of Mexican haciendas from the Spanish colonization.
This cushion would give a subtle pop of colour to your living room, your bed, or armchair. This piece celebrates the Traditional Technique used by the artisan.
WHO MADE MY CUSHION COVER?
This was made by an artisan from Mitla, Oaxaca, the pre-hispanic Zapotec ceremonial city. This artisan joined with a few others to sell their handcrafted products in a shop close to the beaches of Huatulco, Oaxaca. He rarely attends the shop and only sends his products because he stays in Mitla taking care of his children alongside his wife.
Here are all the details about my sourcing process for the Artisan-made Collection in Oaxaca, the obstacles and achievements I had.
There's still a lot to learn and improvements to make, but I am very proud so far for the success in reaching the right places to source with a better understanding of the people on the supply chain behind the cushion covers!
I hope this transparency gives you a better understanding of the values and work behind the process!
If you have any concerns or questions please DM me! ๐
These are your cushion covers, before all the skilled work of the artisans! Do you want to know the process? Read below ๐๐ป
1. The artisans take the raw material which in this case, is the wool from sheep, and prepare the wool passing it between the 2 brushes you see in the basket.
2. Then spinning it to create the yarn ๐งต.
3. The yarns are then naturally dyed with different elements found in their surroundings depending on the colour they want to achieve.
For example, they use walnut ๐ฐ for brown, indigo plant๐ฑ for blue, pomegranate for orange, Mexican marigold ๐ผ for yellow, or cochineal insects ๐ for that deep red colour which was also used for the coats of British soldiers ๐ฌ๐ง!
Then comes the pedal loomโฆ to find out about the next steps keep your eyes peeled ๐ and turn on your notifications for my posts and stories in the ๐ โ๏ธ!

WHO MADE MY CUSHION COVER?
This cushion cover was made by the mother of Freddy, the person in charge of a cooperative shop 2 mins away from the beach in Huatulco, Oaxaca. Their family is from Teotitlan del Valle, Oaxaca, a historic Zapotec weaving city.

While watching the brilliant and thought-provoking series โPan y Circoโ moderated by Mexican actor , these words by Mapuche journalist and activist resonated deeply with me.
Humanity has come far causing destruction of our planet and even our own species.
We need to reconnect with our ecosystems, with nature, with ourselves. I couldnโt think of no one better to learn from, than the Indigenous and Local Communities.
Letโs learn from them.

We're 2 years old! ๐ Yes baby olives, you have made Olives and Linen come this far! ๐ฟ
It all started with a post on this platform during lockdown in my bedroom ๐๏ธ, with a big dream of helping beautiful garments โจ๐ find new homes instead of going to landfills ๐ฎ. It has been a lot of fun, I've learned the most unexpected subjects, and it has taken much more work than I thought, consistency, silencing the imposter syndrome, and self motivation in a place where I knew no one, but trusted you guys would be out there and I could reach you.
And I did! I found conscious people who believe in fair wages ๐ฐ, in equal rights โ๏ธ, in fair pay for skilled artisans. I found you kind hearts that care about people in extreme poverty on the other side of the world, about the tons of garments dumped everyday in deserts ๐๏ธ far away from your homes, and you who believe we and our next generation deserve a living planet ๐ฑ.
I found you guys, who know that no one is ever too small to make a difference.
Thank you baby olives ๐ฟ, for teaching me this. You are changing the world for the better ๐.

In the details of every product on the website you will find a "WHO MADE MY CUSHION COVER?" ๐จ๐พโ๐ฆณ๐ง๐ฝ๐ต๐ฝ space, where I tell you about the artisans who made each of them and from what town in Oaxaca they are specifically from.
See you here at 6 pm!
Look at the craftsmanship and detail in these! ๐ I have always admired artisan creations, but where I see high-quality treasures, other people from bigger cities in Mexico see simple crafts ๐, undervalue this highly skilled work and expect to pay very low prices๐. So the craftsmen are used to accepting this low income.
As these pieces become more valued and desired internationally ๐, new businesses had arisen to work directly with artisans but most still pay them very low costs for their work. There must be intermediaries that pay fair prices to artisans but without transparency, it's very hard to tell ๐คท๐ผโโ๏ธ.
This is what pushed me to source pieces which I could trace back to the person ๐๐พโโ๏ธ who made them and make sure they acknowledged and received the market price ๐ that I paid for the products, without another intermediary lowering the earning of the artisan ๐ฐ.
๐ซ Iโm bringing said pieces to you this Thursday at 6 pm!
๐ 8 unique cushion covers made by 3 different artisans that I will tell you about! ๐Set your reminders for the launch!

8 unique cushion covers sourced directly from cooperative and family owners businesses in Oaxaca, Mexico ๐ชก๐.
The artisan-made Collection is coming up very soon. Here's why I feel so connected ๐ณ to it:
Growing up in a big Mexican city๐๏ธ๐ฒ๐ฝ didn't give me the opportunity to get involved with artisans, or craftsmen from local communities. Nevertheless, whenever we visited other towns my parents loved to walk in artisan markets or stop on the motorway ๐ฃ๏ธ where indigenous artisans put their stalls with their crafts ๐บ๐งถ๐๐๐งบ. My house was always full of artisan-made homeware: from handcrafted mesquite chairs and travertine marble stands, to hand-painted vases.
But I must say, the ones that always made my heart skip a beat were the textiles ๐๐.ย Their creation by the artisans' traditional techniques requires long hours that could come up to months depending on the piece.
Iย admire these creations, and I see a bright spark โจ in certain pieces. This is the same spark โจ I see in everything I source for the shop.
๐ท Like the textile in the pictures, this is a waist loom weaving. With this technique the artisan inserts the tread line by line, while giving shape to their designs depending on the thread colour.
I'll tell you more about how this precious pieces are undervalued by the market in my upcoming post.

Happy Friday baby olives! โผ๏ธThere was a highlight for me last weekend in London ๐ก. The trip was mostly touring around the city but I did want to share this:
๐๐ป SWIPE to see what thrilled me while walking by Regent Street: conversation about sustainability โป๏ธ.
I found it very fulfilling to see lots of eco-conscious messages advertised in one of the world's most prestigious shopping ๐๏ธ destinations! This means that consumers are changing their ways to shop!
As we continue educating ourselves, being careful of what we buy, we are pushing the industries into making bigger efforts towards more sustainable practices. And THAT baby olives, is how we make a bigger change ๐๐.
๐ On the downside, this also means that they could be (and several certainly are) trying to Greenwash us. So I'm not here advertising Carbon Neutral is enough, but they do notice WE CARE about what we buy. And are they truly being eco-conscious? That is our job as consumers to keep educating ourselves, looking further and asking questions ๐.
