Natural hydraulic lime. Is it worth the difference in price?

Built in 1846, this grade 2 listed building has been lovingly restored by Lathams Stone Restoration to last another 176 years. During its long history it's had lots of bad repair work done, which unfortunately had left it in a very bad state. The client was experiencing a lot of damp issues inside caused by cement pointing, we used a natural hydraulic lime to allow this beautiful and historic building to breathe again. Bollin tower, it's been an absolute pleasure.

We arrived to the property to witness this farm had been pointed in the past using cement, as a result this created alot of damp inside the property. We carefully cut out all of the defective cement pointing and replaced it with a natural hydraulic lime. The building can now literally breathe again.

Working on a grade 2 listed building and inside the tower we find some old banker marks and also a strange goblin/demon carved in the stone.

Apologies to those following L.S.R. although the page has been fairly quite, we have been extremely busy behind the scenes, pricing lots of jobs from your terraced houses to large stone churches, stay tuned for images of them which will be coming soon. Majority of our work is completed using Natural Hydraulic Lime and we won't point in temperatures under 6 degrees and for cement under 3 degrees incase it freezes and ruins the finish. For all the customers awaiting work done we will be in touch very soon as we expect temperatures to rise very soon. Thank you for your patience and stay safe.

Merry Christmas to all following L.S.R. Contracts are ready to start for the new year and we can't wait to get 2020 and covid19 out of the way.

Behind the plastered walls of this kitchen were a mixture of engineering brick and concrete block. The client wanted a more rustic look. Brick slips were provided by the client and we created this stunning rustic feature wall and finished with a natural hydraulic lime.

A prime example of how your stonework shouldn't be pointed, we cut the pointing out by hand and used a natural hydraulic lime to repoint it. #

The client of this edwardian property has done an excellent job renovating his home back to its original state. He called us to repoint his porch, we used different graded sands and natural hydraulic lime to match the original texture of pointing and also used a natural dye to colour the pointing to match the original colour. Overall the client was happy and so were we.

Some examples of the damage caused by cement pointing to soft porous brick. This sort of damage also occurs on stone. Cement isn't breathable and moisture is unable to pass through the joint. This moisture then gets trapped within the brick or stone, in freezing temperatures the moisture expands and causes similar damage as seen in these pictures.

Before and after of a house we cleaned and repointed in natural hydraulic lime.

A couple of brick repair samples provided using lime restoration mortar, then pointed with lime mortar. Using cement on soft brick like these would cause a barrier between the brick and repair, trapping water and damaging the brick even further.

There wasn't much left of these stone cills due to once again the non breathable paint. We restored them back to their former glory using lime mortar.

Lime mortar repairs on Lancashire cricket club, we love doing this type of work and the entertainment wasn't bad either.

Start to finish of a small job. Originally the client didn't want to expose the brickwork and just paper. They changed their mind and we were glad they did as the brickwork totally compliments the natural stone fire surround.

This is a serpentine granite column, the quarry stopped production of this type of granite and the client wanted us to repair it as buying new wasn't possible. Here is the sample we produced for him.

This is a before and after of a window head, reveals and cill which had been painted with a non breathable paint. We use hydraulic lime which is breathable and sympathetic to the stonework behind the repair.

There is always something we can do, if your brickwork is beyond repair and cleaning.

This is a pointing sample we did for a client who owned a victorian house. We used hydraulic limes and different aggregates to match the original line pointing as close as possible.
