The summer holidays are flying by, and for many families, the start of a new school year is fast approaching. As a parent or carer, you might be preparing for this transition and noticing a range of emotions in your child, including some feelings of worry and anxiety. It’s completely normal for both you and your child to feel this way—starting at a new school can be daunting, with so many unknowns, new faces, different lessons, and a new routine to adapt to.
If your child is feeling anxious, they’re not alone—many children share these concerns. To support your child through this transition, there are plenty of resources and strategies available on our social media and link in bio. In today’s post, we’ve highlighted three excellent websites packed with helpful information for easing the transition to secondary school:
thesleepcharity.org.uk: This website offers tips and advice for establishing a healthy sleep routine. Anxiety can often disrupt sleep, which in turn can exacerbate worries. Encouraging your child to adopt a consistent bedtime routine a week before school starts can help them adjust to the new schedule.
youngminds.org.uk: A fantastic resource for advice on building emotional resilience and coping with change. This site offers practical tips that can help your child manage their feelings during this period of transition.
bbc.co.uk/bitesize: This site has a wealth of information about starting secondary school, which you can explore together with your child to help them feel more prepared.
If your child is feeling worried about starting at a new school, encourage them to talk to someone they trust, whether it’s you, another caregiver, friends, or family members. We hope these resources will be helpful to you and your child, and we’re wishing them all the best as they embark on this new journey 🏫 ✨
