My thoughts of Verrruca or ‘Guard Socks’ 💭

Soooo one of the things that pains me greatly is the concept of Verruca socks or ‘Guard Socks’ Urghhh 🙄

My reasons are as follows:

1. There is a question mark as too whether we actually catch verrucas from swimming pools. Research now shows most kids are carrying the HPV virus on their skin anyway. So, my thinking is we do not actually catch verrucae like we do a cold but actually like how we get fungal. It’s on your skin and when the circumstances are right, and there is micro trauma to the skin, this allows the verruca virus to get into the skin and to the basal layer and create a lesion.

2. Social stigma/ruins your street cred. Go for a swim with everyone saying ‘arghh look at that person with a sock on, they are infected’.

3. They are not waterproof or designed to be. As a result, a layer of water will accommodate between the sock and the foot creating a soup of infectious water. Which then in the changing room ends up all over the floor when the sock is taken off and is consequently all ready for the next person to stand on.

4. They are called 'guard socks' with the idea of not having an infection escaping, but to stop one getting in. So theoretically the people who should be wearing the socks should be the ones who haven’t got a verruca and don’t want to get one.

Inconclusion they are unhelpful and more harmful 🤷‍♂️

Another tool I use to assess people, if I suspect there maybe some kind of vascular or circulatory problem is a Doppler!! 🦶❤️

It will be familiar to anyone who has had children in the past. As this is what they use to listen to the baby’s heartbeat 👶. However, we can use it to assess people’s circulation!

There are 3 different things we are listening for:

1. The Rhythm (how the heart is beating)
2. How sharp the sounds are (if there are any blockages)
3. How many individual sounds we can hear (if there is any hardening in the arteries)

Listening for these are particularly important if you have diabetes or any other conditions that cause vascular issues. We can also pick up problems before they become acute by using this equipment!

Lets talk about the dreaded Verruca 😈😈😈

- What is a Verruca? 🤔
A Verruca is a term for a wart that presents on or around the foot. It is a viral infection of the skin and is part of a group of viruses called Human Papiloma Virus (HPV) of which there are numerous types.

The virus sits in the upper layers of the skin and utilises your own cells as host cells.

The virus does not need its own blood supply and produces very few sigs that it is there, this makes it much more difficult for your immune system to detect the virus and remove it, as you would expect with other types of infection.
Most people will have some form of immunity to the virus but in practice this does not always protect you from getting an infection. There are some groups of people who seem to be more susceptible than others

- Treatments
The most common method is self-treatment using a caustic which will soften the skin on the lesion so the skin can easily be removed. This treatment is repeated every other day, therefore removing enough skin to remove the area infected with the virus.

Other treatments include: Swift, Needling, Cryotherapy

- General
• There is no 100% cure rate.
• Treatment can involve a combination of or alternating treatment regimes
• Interrupting he treatment regime will in effect mean the treatment will start from the beginning as the Verruca will recover from previous treatments.
• Be careful not to spread the virus while treating it, any debris from the lesion will have viral elements in it.
• The lesion can increase in size after initial treatment as it may be uncovered by the treatment.
• Treatment can take up to 6months in some cases.

- Common misconceptions
• Verruca do not breath, covering them will soften the skin in a similar way to a caustic preparation.
• Black sports are blood vessels only, they are not the virus or its roots.
• Banana skin is a powerful but inconsistent caustic, it is difficult to control and can cause burns.
• If the lesion is covered patients can swim with a Verruca.
• Due to the effect of the immune system a Verruca can spontaneously disappear.
