Vanessa Williams, PTSTA (O) and Organisational Transactional Analysis
Along with her other roles, our intrepid interviewer, Georgina Hunt, managed to grab a couple of minutes with Vanessa Williams to ask her a little about herself and her role at Connexus. Vanessa is running an immensely popular Organisational Transactional Analysis course – seeking to understand and improve communication/relationship at all levels of an organisation and examining change and growth from the perspectives of individuals as well as groups within organisations and departments as whole. We are currently taking applications to start in September 2022. Connexus Institute is delighted to partner with @Sue Cox of Smart-UK to offer an empowering and scientifically based course on auricular (ear) acupuncture as an adjunctive intervention to treat a wide range of indications, including substance misuse, mental health conditions, and general well- being. We draw on the beautiful and poetic theories of the five elements and Yin Yang to bring you this dynamic four-day course, set over two weekends in October 2021. It is designed for those already working in the field of addiction or mental health, including qualified and trainee counsellors and psychotherapists, health workers and designated prison staff. Originating in China and Japan, traditional Five Element Acupuncture uses the elements of Fire, Earth, Metal, Water and Wood as analogies to explain complicated systems in a simple way, to help understand everything in the Universe, including human beings, the core of the personality, how people interact with the world, and how they might assess situations in daily life. Imbalances of these elements can lead to difficulties in our being able to grow or flourish when depleted. Ever find yourself in challenging, uncomfortable or unpleasant situations with the same person or people every time you meet? Maybe you have a friend or a relative who is constantly critical or puts you in the role of listener, never taking an interest in what you have to say. Maybe there is someone at work you feel you cannot say no to, and you and clam up wishing you could say or do something differently. ‘Next time,’ you might think, ‘it’ll be different, but the pattern never seems to change. TA suggests that one of the overriding factors in the continuation of difficult relationship dynamics is not, in fact, the other person’s behaviour but our own psychological state of mind. We can move between three different ‘ego states’: 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭: where you think, feel, and behave in ways copied from past parents or authority figures. 𝐀𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐭: where you think, feel and behave in ways that are present-centred and not controlled by past influences and experiences. 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝: feelings, attitudes and behaviours replayed from earlier versions of yourself and in ways that are again not helpful to current, present-centred problem solving or relating. Think of a recent difficult event with a particular person and ask yourself the following: - Did I think, feel, and behave in ways that my parents used to (or other grown-ups) when I was little? - Did I think, feel and behave in appropriate ways and a direct here-and-now response to what was going on? - Did I think, feel and behave as I did at some point in my recent, mid or distant past? Connexus Institute offers courses in Transactional Analysis from beginner two-day introductory 101 courses to counselling, psychotherapy and organisational training. Our next 101 course takes place on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th August 2021 at our beautiful premises in Hove. This very popular course has been described by many as the most useful learning they’ve done to date! Detail

In Transactional Analysis (TA), the term 'Game' refers to some of the most painful and destructive relationship patterns that can ultimately limit the quality of our lives and lead to the reinforcement of negative thoughts/feelings about ourselves, others and life in general. Writing through an organisational lens, Summerton (1992) proposed a way of looking at Games from a systemic perspective - within teams, organisations, and the workplace. He wanted to provide a model that could help people understand and analyse their own 'group processes' and in a way that allowed for productive discussion and resolution of the difficulties and re-engagement with the task at hand. Summerton's 'Games Pentagon' suggests that difficult situations tend to attract people to one of five different roles: Stage Manager, Spectator, Sniper, Saviour and Scapegoat. Understanding these roles in a workplace situation can greatly benefit people who may want to find strategies to deal with difficulties and overcome barriers to growth and productivity. The Connexus Institute's part-time 120-hour Organisational Transactional Analysis programme led by Vanessa Williams starts in October 2021 and is ideal for those who are working at any level of an organisation to: • Understand how organisations behave • Design and deliver development interventions • Bring about change • Clarify professional identity • Enhance relationships, management and leadership capability • Develop skills in areas such as coaching, consultancy, L&D https://www.connexusinstitute.com/our-courses/course/organisational-transactional-analysis-20/ Get in touch if you'd like more info - we look forward to hearing from you! #transactionalanalysis #leadershipdevelopment #leadership #motivation #leadershipcoaching #success #business #coaching #coach #leaders #hr #training #humanresourcesmanagement
