This Machine Kills Wasps
Brighton’s newest alternative comedy, music, and musical comedy night
A little interview with our very fabulous founder!
INTERVIEW: Brand New Comedy & Music Night In Brighton A brand new evening starts this week in Brighton!
Time to introduce you all to our evil* mastermind, James, who is only a vague but useful presence on Facebook because he does not enjoy it (which is why he enlisted me, Chloë, to do this side of things.)
I put some questions to him and asked him to write a little blurb about himself:
Hello, I am James, an awkward man from the suburbs.
I put on indie discos in my twenties and early thirties. I’ve put on comedy nights in my forties. This is my first attempt at combining these two loves.
I cannot remember why I got into comedy but I can’t remember a time when it wasn’t a crucial part of my life.
My parents showed me lots of brilliant but age inappropriate things when I was very young, like Airplane and Blazing Saddles.
My dad was savvy enough to explain that it’s the white guys we’re laughing at in the latter, and stupid enough to show the former the night before my first ever plane journey. I was six.
Likes (5):
International socialism, the sea, Björk, Ursula Le Guin, and long rail journeys in a well observed quiet coach.
Dislikes (5):
TERFs, Tories, cars, guns, and the concept of “banter”.
Aesthetic:
Ageing indie kid / bad folk musician, depending on beard.
What you wanted for your 10th Birthday:
I have very little recollection of being 10 but I think the Cold War was coming to an end, so i likely desired my own nuclear powered Soviet submarine. My interest in militarism ended with puberty, as it should for everyone.
* entirely not evil but “kind and lovely” mastermind doesn’t have the same ring to it.
That all-important link for tickets to our debut night! Our venue is beautiful and intimate so do buy soon to avoid disappointment!

Our updated poster! Early bird tickets have gone!
Hello!
We are Brighton’s newest, best, and possibly only music / comedy / musical comedy night and our DEBUT SHOW is at the gorgeous Folklore Rooms on Thursday 2nd February.
Headliners are the fabulous Message From The Ravens, Hastings’ premiere Americana / goth balled / indie folk / sea shanty collective. Expect five part harmonies, folklore, and hooks galore.
Leila Navabi is a 23 year old writer and comedian who is very funny indeed. She has been described as 'the actual future of comedy'(LMAOnaise); her television and radio stand-up credits include Live at Aberystwyth Pier (BBC), Stand-up Sesh (BBC), Stand Up in My House (BBC) and The Leak (BBC). She is bilingual, with Welsh Language credits including Ffyrnig (S4C) and Ni y Nawdegau (BBC Cymru).
Recently completing a sold out run at Soho Theatre, Shelf are a q***r duo who would be James' personal choice for Britain’s 2023 Eurovision entry.
“Clever and catchy” - Bruce Dessau
Selena Mersey is a Brighton based musical comedian and burlesque performer. Her songs have been likened to a MUCH FILTHIER Victoria Wood and her impression of Freud remains unsurpassed.
Sharlin Jahan is a BBC (British Bangladeshi Canadian) comedian who plays no musical instruments that I am aware of. A funny women finalist, she has performed stand up on BBC4 and runs and hosts the excellent Brown Sauce night in London.
Your MC is James Walsh (Next Level Sketch / Factually Inaccurate Stand Up). James is a character comedian, sketch performer, and owner of three (3) ukuleles.
