What exactly are SEMH needs?

Understanding the basics can help you better support your child or student in the classroom.

SEMH refers to a range of emotional and behavioural issues that can impact a child’s learning and social interactions. Make a point of learning more about the signs and how to address them. Here’s a few tips-

-Emotional outbursts
-Withdrawal from school/peers/family
-Anxiety
-Behaviour issues that don’t add up
-Academic struggles….

Just a few…

Dealing with kids who have SEMH issues for whatever reason means they will not react or act in the same way a kid who doesn’t have these issues does. So don’t deal with them in the same way….⭐️

⚡️Teacher Tips⚡️

I’m only giving 5 right now because there are so many things teachers can do to improve differentiation for their learners….
Parents.. ask for this.

These are standard tools and strategies for teachers that they learn during teacher training.
Sorry teachers but it’s time…

⭐️ Make sure you know your student; plan for them. Individually.

⭐️ Amend plans to support their sensory needs. Kids don’t need a diagnosis to deserve sensory support. Add sensory tools to your classroom.

⭐️Chunk it up- if a work has been created, then chunk it up into sections- support their working memory and make it make sense to them. Don’t just expect them to ‘catch up’.

⭐️Check in with your class- find out how they feel before you start work- connect with them.

⭐️ If you can, shift their creative learning to the afternoon- utilise fresh brains in the morning for the academics.. if you’re allowed of course…

✨Things we can concentrate more on in the new year for our kids….

There’s so many tools we can support with and empower parents with, but my biggest piece of advice to all parents of kids who have any kind of difficulty is to give them more love. ❤️

Sometimes it’s tricky, too hard and we have to delve really deep inside ourselves to find the tools.

Just keep love in mind. It can always be the best backup plan in those difficult moments. Take a breath.

⭐️Dig deep in 2023.⭐️

29/12/2022

⭐️IF THEY ARE GIVEN THE RIGHT TOOLS⭐️

Next year I’m offering 60 min calls for parents who feel stuck. What does this mean?

I’ll spend time with you and your child working out strategies to help them and you…
This could include-

⭐️Helping them with their studies ⭐️Handling school situations
⭐️Unbiased school advice
⭐️Sen support and advice
⭐️Tutoring advice/matching
⭐️Deciphering school reports

Every situation and child is different and their planning needs to be reflective of that.
I’ll be talking about it a lot on here and will also be offering one of these mentoring sessions FREE every month until June.
👁️ Keep an eye out for a link next week to sign up for news and the Free session. ✨

⭐️Don’t give them a hard time for saying “whatever”⭐️

I have and it got me nowhere. Then I realised what it really meant for my son.
The force they are thrown into teenage life and hormones is too quick for their mindsets to handle.
They create a barrier or boundary which looks like rudeness and disdain- but they’re just trying to navigate emotions and feelings and so they just need help to decide or know what’s going on.

Be patient. Pick your battles. ❤️

⭐️They are going through so much right now. ⭐️

I know it may seem like they hate you, or they’re shutting down, but it’s a lot.

🥺Imagine having everything happen at one time, emotions, puberty, exams, grades, behaviour, parent issues, siblings. And more.
🤓Resilience is only built through being held in a supportive and respectful environment.
☺️Support them by giving them space to grow and realise their actions.

Things I remind myself while parenting…

⭐️Make them feel responsible, give them a fun job- teach them to earn and reward themselves. Help them look forward to something. Hope. Ask their opinion. They are becoming their own person.
Trust them to be honest with you; don’t teach them suspicion.
Support them through these hard school years. They need their education more than ever.⭐️

⭐️Parents are asking me how to support their kids study at home -it’s my biggest question asked⭐️

Here’s some extra bonus tips - if this is the least you do- teach them these techniques:

❤️ Condense the information- write it in your words to make it your own.
❤️Create a memory map that you can look back on- your brain will remember the image of this in your mind.
❤️ Create a second set of memory flash cards. They belong to you and your brain. Write down the things you repeatedly forget.
❤️ Get a mate round and teach them the parts you are struggling with. You’ll be amazed how much this will help you.
❤️ Use past papers and exemplar answers. Learn the technique to the structure of exams.
❤️ Team up and revise with someone else. It will motivate you and help you to feel supported and not alone.

⭐️Are you watching your child go off to school tomorrow to sit a mock exam?⭐️

Don’t take it for granted that they are ready for these exams. Yes, teachers and schools have made a massive effort to update and prepare the students as much as possible but the fact is, they’ve had to step up.

💥Your child maybe worried but not showing it. Check.

💥Your child maybe stressing out and not talking. Check.

Sit and give them a hand with revision tonight.

Are you struggling with Getting your child to read? You are NOT ALONE. In their minds, they are not at school, they don't 'NEED' to read and they will be fine when they go back to school. This is not always the case. As a teacher, I've noticed, especially since last year, that children are reading less. ... But what can you do at home? If you have a child (like mine!) who doesn't want to read- It's still my job to encourage it at home. Get them to read everything! them to read ingredients for you, or ask them to read something for you that's on your laptop...Anything. Just put those words in front of them...

24/05/2021

Just in case they are too afraid to say out loud….

02/03/2021

✨It’s our job to make sure that every student in our classes understands what to do regardless of their ability. ✨

✨Teaching is tough, but being a student with any sort of difficulty is tougher. Especially this year.

✨I promise to make sure that every student I work with, leaves feeling more confident about their work and themselves in school.

✨That’s my promise to you✨

01/03/2021

⭐️With World book day coming up, I’m starting a new reminder to my own kids and those I teach about reading.. but don’t add too much pressure, parents!⭐️
It’s hard, I know, when your child says “No” to learning because they have low self confidence about aspects of their curriculum, but adding reading to their schedule every evening gives them a lot more than you think.
If you have a troublesome learner, try these 2 tips:

✨Read to them. Reminding them about how to pronounce and the flow of a story helps build their confidence- swap over and ask them to read to you after. Hearing you helps them. Children love a special time with their parents.

✨Pick their favourite story! Don’t feel pressured to read something new all the time. Repetition is not a bad thing when they are reading their favourites. Re-reading familiar texts will also build speed, accuracy and confidence.
❤️

Teaching GCSE this morning -checking out Iago’s speech from Othello.
✨Don’t just read it- act it out✨
Iago is such a manipulative and charismatic character, it is a great character to study- going through Shakespeare texts can be hard for some students but not if you act it out! 😃 ✨

Words to look up after today’s lesson:
Patronising.
Manipulative.
Duplicitous.

They look like hard words, but these are the 3 that my student picked out this morning! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

What is Dyslexia? 17/02/2021

Just a small insight to what dyslexia is.. Its not a "one size fits all" diagnosis nor is there one way to support. Everyone is individual and needs 1-1 focus to help them create their own strategies over time.

What is Dyslexia? Dyslexia is something which affects hundreds of thousands of people across the UK.
