I have some awesome news, myself, , , and are collaborating to bring an interactive exhibition to the Jamaica Street Studios on Stokes Croft (Bristol).
If you love Reggae music, as well as the art and culture that comes with it, this is the event for you. There will be lots of prints and graphic design from , exclusive prints/merch from , and a ton of limited edition merchandise from ourselves.
There is a launch night on Friday the 23rd, drinks will be available, and records will be playing. Please do come along and support. There is no entry fee. This event is strictly for the culture.

.form Studios welcome Poor Man’s Friend Records to exhibit a body of work.
Put together by a collective of artists that have all played a significant role in building an Independent record label.
This exhibition is a celebration of the long-standing relationship between music, the arts, photography, and collaboration. Poor Man’s Friend is the total of these parts, a brand that is built through the shared ideas and passion of different artists, artists that
have come together to create an imprint that represents them.
This exhibition will be open to the public from August 23rd to August 25th, guest Dj’s will
be playing from 6 - 10 on the Friday and 6 - 8 Saturday. There will be refreshments available
as well as an extensive range of merch, prints, and original pieces for purchase.

THIS MONTHS DROP is so exciting, a brand new super limited poly vinyl dubplate is now up on our bandcamp (link below in comments) This is an incredible record, written and performed by the legendary Glen Ricks, perhaps better known as the lead singer of the iconic group "The Fabulous Flames". Mr Ricks gives us a super soulful but melancholy vocal that floats over a beautiful mid-70s roots cut absolutely drenched in plate reverb. The B side is a heavy Nyahbinghi dub cut.
Arriving in Toronto in 1969, he entered a talent contest where he met the first place winners, a group of guys from Jamaica called "The Fabulous Flames." Impressed with his stagecraft, the group soon found that Glen had musical talent in abundance. Glen joined the group, which also featured Lloyd Lovindeer and Kirk Salmon.
Soon after, they went to Jamaica and did their first recording, "Holly Holy," a cover of the Neil Diamond hit. The recording featuring Glen's voice was done with legendary producer Clancy Eccles. The song became a big hit, sparking the creation of their first album that spring a second single called "Growing Up," which also became a hit.
When the group split in the seventies, each member pursued a solo career. Glen began travelling to the United States to pursue a solo career. It's during this period that he went to Chicago and met his idol, Donny Hathaway. He was given the opportunity to work closely with Donny, which took his music and talent to an even higher level.
Late in the eighties he returned to Jamaica, establishing himself as an in demand singer with leading producers like King Jammy, Phillip “Fatis” Burrell, Bobby “Digital” Dixon and Lloyd “Pickout” Dennis.
This record is super limited. Only 25 copies are available from our Bandcamp. They are £25.99 each, and there will be no restock.

The last few copies of this beautiful Tony Tuff are available through our Bandcamp (link below). Mastered I've been using this one as an opener in sets recently, a nice downtempo soulful roots tune from Mr Tuff (R.I.P) with a lovely old school dub with alternative horns arrangment and sax solo.
We are going to have a load of new merch and a new record hit the Bandcamp at the end of the month, we are super excited to show you all what we have been working on at Hq. The plan is to put out twelve releases this year, including an Lp. Thank you to all of you who have supported. Lots of you have been rocking with us from the very beginning! For that, we are super grateful, and we promise to do our utmost to keep bringing you creative and authentic music.

As most of you avid reggae listeners already know, Tony Tuff sadly passed away last weekend. We unfortunately decided to put out our last recording together on the Friday just before. For obvious reasons, I decided not to promote the release over that period.
Here's a short video of me playing the tune (face in for the algorithm), the record sounds absolutely incredible! Everyone involved absolutely smashed it as always. did an awesome job cutting this one as always, artwork looks as beautiful as ever and the musicians created the perfect backdrop for Tony's beautiful and heartfelt message.

Tony Tuff ( born Winston Anthony Morris, April, 1955) , was a singer who was a member of The African Brothers in the late 1960s before embarking on a solo career in the later end of the 1970s.
Tuff started his career in 1969 as a member of the vocal trio The African Brothers, along with Sugar Minott and Derrick "Bubbles" Howard. The African Brothers split up in the mid-1970s, and Tuff pursued other work outside music until he returned as a solo artist in the late 1970s, with the album Tony Tuff Meets Errol Schorder, split with Errol Scorcher, and self-productions including the "I'm So Glad" single on his own Winston label. He worked with YabbyYou on the Tony Tuff album in 1980 and worked with Sugar Minott again on the 1981 album Presenting Mr. Tuff, released on Minott's Black Roots label. He worked on several sound systems in the late 1970s and 1980s, including Lees Unlimited and Henry "Junjo" Lawes' Volcano system. Lawes also produced several successful singles by Tuff, including "Water Pumpee" and "Mix Me Down."He also produced his 1983 album Come Fe Mash It. He continued to be active during the 1980s but was largely absent from the music scene in the 1990s. He returned in 2000 and has recorded several albums in the new millennium, including How Long, recorded with . He toured Europe twice in 2002 before touring Canada and the United States.
This is our latest polyvinyl release, recorded in January of this year. Tony continued recording right up until the end, a true rootsman. He will certainly be missed.

The legendary Mr. Tuff steps up to bat for the Poor Man's Friend team with a brand new 45. It's hard to put into words what this artist means to myself and the team here at PMF. Mr Tuff started his career in 1969. He was the lead singer for the African brothers, he recorded for Yabby You, Junjo, Errol Scorcher, Jah Shaka, Coxsone Dodd, and many, many more To say this incredible artist is prolific may well be an understatement.
In classic Tony Tuff style, he has written us a beautiful roots record. A sparse rhythm section plays second fiddle to an almost overpowering horn section. Huge backing vocals litter the track, recorded by up and coming artist . This one really hits the soul, calling for all of us to get up, stand up, and fight for our human rights.
As with all of our poly vinyl dubplates, this one is super limited. Only 25 copies are available, I know that £25 is a hefty price for a record. It is, however, the most viable way to support the artist financially in an immediate way.

This will be the first of a series of collaborative nights. These events will be dedicated to bringing back the old time stylee ! If you love hearing unreleased music, obscure Dubplates, vintage 45s, and weighty Lps, this event is for you.
Bristol Reggae society is thought to have been established in 2005/2006, second only to Reggae Sundays in terms of Cosies longevity. They have an incredible passion for Reggae music of all eras and all styles.

Hi everyone, I hope all of you have had a great start to the week! Thank you all so much for the support with our last record. All sold out in a day, it has been brought to my attention, however, that there were some issues at our local royal mail branch the day of sending. If anyone hasn't received their copy, please do get in touch.
Well, what can I say about this record, Mr Tuff is one of my favourite artists period. We have a few forthcoming 45s with vocals from the 80s. However, I wanted to work with him as he is now. I wanted to hear the fire that still eminates from a man who started recording in 1968. A man who sang lead for the legendary African brothers, a man who recorded hits in every decade in nearly every style. For me, he is one of the original voices, with a style that can't be imitated.
This one will be another limited edition lathe cut with a heavy instrumental/dubwise on the B side. 30 copies at £30 a piece. If you would like to secure your copy, get in touch via Dm. If not, they will be going live as a pre-order on Friday. If you choose to buy a copy, you will be supporting a veteran artist and an independent label. We are so grateful for all the kind words and support you gave us last month for the Candy Man and Leroy Horns record.

Riddim created in the Poor Man's Friend studio with my brother .d_oconnell, horns Played and arranged by none other than the talented , the flipside is a vocal coming straight from Youthman Promotion studio, courtsey of the one Candyman (keep your eyes open for the next post).
As always, this is going to be an exclusive plate for the soundmen and sound women. There are only 20 cuts up for grabs. These will be £30 plus postage. A few of you have already reserved a copy, so those are set a side. The rest will be going live this Friday at 6 pm (UK time) and will be shipping the week after.

For years, friends have been asking me to put up some selections/mixes. Up until a few weeks ago, I had been horrible at doing so. However, to make it up to you all, I have started putting out monthly mixes and selections. There are currently two up on our YouTube channel (subscribe, please 🙏). There will be different guest hosts, guest djs, and all types of sweet ear candy. This is a picture of my Taula 4. All mixes will be recorded through this with a set of trusty 1210s. Let us know if you're feeling the output.

I'm incredibly proud to have made it into this month's , yet again another beautiful review. This time, it was written about our new record featuring the incredible in combination with the venerable . See blow for the translation 👇
Rare artist with a very characteristic style. Icho Candy reminds us of good memories with its high tones of sufferer, supported by the beautiful harmonies of the Viceroys, for one of their last appearances on record. This combination is placed on a very roots riddim, complete with its mystical cues and its melodica riff as well. These ingredients are skillfully deconstructed and enhanced on a beautifully crafted dub almost from the 70s evoking King Tubby. Bristol is definitely a new source of authentic reggae!
I am glad to have been included amongst such a prestigious peer group, shout out to , , and . Big up on the graphic design once again, on the horns arrangement and on the killer Dub! Thank you so much for including us in your beautiful publication once again. Proud to represent for the UK and Bristols Reggae scene.

Robert Dallas meets Silver Cat, two big bull inna one pen style. These two legendary artists meet for the first time on our relick of the Delroy Wilson Trojan classic. The instrumental was cut at the Poor Man’s Friend Studio after we heard a beautiful rendition of the original which was cut for a dubplate, once our version was cut Mr Dallas promptly proceeded to contact Silver Cat for the feature and his longtime friend Manasseh for the dub mixes.

PMF004 - Icho Candy Ft The Viceroys - Pave The Way and Dub, is now available to preorder from today (link at the bottom of the page). We are so proud to present what we feel is an incredible piece of roots music on a Limted 7".
A truly enigmatic character from the golden era of Jamaican roots music, Icho Candy is an artist that has, to me, always been shrouded in mystery. A devout rastafarian born with a gift for prophetic songwriting, Candy always writes in a way that is true to himself and his deep seated beliefs, regardless of the external pressures he endures as a veteran artist, an incredible feet for an independent artist with a career that spans fifty years.
First recording for the great Joe Gibbs and Jack Ruby in the late seventies, Icho’s big break in the industry came with the hit record “Captain Selassie”, a track that is widely considered to be one of the greatest rastafari anthems in dancehall. During this time Icho also recorded for labels such as Jah Life, Rockers International, Tesfa, Jah Shaka and many more. Like so many of the great artists in the eighties Icho recorded and toured in America for an extended period alongside Sugar Minott, Nicodemus, Nitty Gritty, King Kong before returning to Jamaica to record two amazing albums for the late Jah Shaka.
The A side of this latest seven inch gives us the classic writing style of Icho Candy. Pairing his lyrical depth with an early 70’s Phil Pratt style production. An eerie horns line meets the clean sharp, older school backing vocals provided by The Mighty Viceroys to create something magical, the type of record we thought we may have already heard on some scratchy 45 deep in a soundmans crate.
Yakka once again returns to the label on B side duties, providing another Tubby inspired voyage into dusty fx units and quick draw fades. The bassline increases, the vocal decreases but the vibe never ceases. Welcome home Icho Candy

What an awesome first year for our label, we managed to put out five releases and some great work.
