Gulp
Taking microfibre pollutants out of our water systems, one household at a time. They are easy to fit with all accessible washing machines.
Our eco laundry microfibre filter units fit easily, look good and are microfibre hungry!
Did you spot Gulp in The Guardian yesterday? 👀
Fantastic to see an increasing focus on the problem of pollution from laundry and an emphasis on microfibre filtration solutions, such as Gulp, that can effectively address this issue ✅
In our continued efforts to combat this problem, we recently delivered a whitepaper to the European Commission in collaboration with PlanetCare, XEROS, The 5 Gyres Institute and A Plastic Planet. It’s highly encouraging to see this topic gaining attention and hope this serves as further motivation for our proposal to be given serious consideration.

Worried about your laundry releasing microplastics? A filter could be a simple solution An external filter, retrofitted to your washing machine, is an immediate way of stopping microfibres going down the drain
Taking a moment to reflect how amazing it was to see Gulp on display at this week!
We’re honoured that Gulp was selected as one of Kevin McCloud’s this year. It was lovely to see so much interest for Gulp and support for our mission to stop plastic pollution from laundry 🧺🌊
Great to see a big focus on green living and sustainable design at the show. We particularly enjoyed catching a glimpse of Kevin in action chatting with Oliver Heath Design on ways we can integrate nature into our homes to create healthier, happier spaces through biophilic design 🌿
Congratulations to all the other green heroes that were selected this year!💚
The countdown to Grand Designs Live is on!⏳
We’re super excited that Gulp has been selected as one of Kevin McCloud's this year and looking forward to seeing Gulp on display in the Green Living section💚
If you're planning to attend the event, be sure to drop by and catch a glimpse of Gulp up close! Our team members will also be on-site, ready to chat and answer any questions you may have 👍

We get lots of questions about what we do with the microplastics gathered from Gulp. So.. let’s talk about it🗣
To empty the captured microfibres, all you need to do is empty the filter cup when the LED changes colour. The filter drains all the water so no buckets are required🪣
To dispose of the microfibres, you can either pop the microfibres in the bin or save them up and send them back to us as part of our microfibre return scheme. We’ll either recycle them for you or use them for research purposes📫♻️ Both options achieve the important goal of saving them from entering our oceans🌊

It’s World Water Day🌊
This year, it’s all about accelerating change to solve the water and sanitation crisis. And because water affects us all, we need everyone to take action.
How can you get involved?
The four most popular actions that people are taking worldwide include:
🌊 Save water: Take shorter showers and don’t let the tap run when brushing teeth, doing dishes and preparing food
🗑 Stop polluting: Don’t put food waste, oils, medicines and other harmful chemicals or items down toilets or drains
🛒 Eat local: Buy local, seasonal food and look for products made with less water
🌳 Protect nature: Plant a tree via dedicated organisations. You can usually pay just £1 per tree!
Although each action is equally as important, minimising pollution is something that we’re particularly passionate about. That’s why we created Gulp: a microplastic filter that swallows plastics from your laundry before the ocean does🌊🧺

It’s Global Recycling Day♻️
Whilst making waste-conscious decisions is important as an individual, it’s equally as important as a company to do our part.
Gulp is a product with cradle-to-cradle principles, and we’ve put significant effort into the design so that at end of life, Gulp can be easily dismantled and recycled.
We have also created a microfibre recycling scheme, so when the microplastics are captured from your laundry, they can be sent back to us and saved from our oceans and landfill🌊🗑
More generally, at Matter (our parent company) we’re extremely passionate about the ways in which we can reduce waste. That’s why we’re in the process of being B Corp certified in order to further engrain it into our culture.

World nations finally reached a historic and vital agreement to protect the world’s oceans after a whole decade of negotiations.
The High Seas Treaty aims to help place 30% of the seas into protected areas by 2030, to safeguard and allow the recovery of marine nature🌊🐟
This is incredible news, and as an organisation focusing on the protection of the sea, we couldn’t be more thrilled. As Laura Seller, an oceans campaigner for Greenpeace Nordic says, it’s a great ‘sign that in a divided world, protecting nature and people can triumph over geopolitics’.
However, many arrangements and physical actions are still required following the agreement. Along with many other organisations striving for the same thing, that’s where we come in!
We created Gulp because we want to protect our oceans by minimising microplastic pollution. If you feel similarly, find out more information here👉 https://www.gulp.online

Ocean treaty: Historic agreement reached after decade of talks Countries have reached a landmark agreement to help put 30% of the world's oceans into protection.
It’s no secret that our clothes are largely made of synthetic materials that leak microplastics into our waterways when washed🧺🌊.
But what if we told you that’s not the only place they’re found?
There are some really surprising and upsetting places where microplastics have recently been discovered. This includes:
❄️ Fresh snowfall: With an average of 29 microplastic particles detected per litre of snow
🐋 Blue Whales: Ingesting up to 10 million pieces of microplastics every day
🩸 Human blood: With scientists finding particles in almost 80% of people tested
👩🍼 Breast milk: With 76% of samples tested (from a study on new mothers) finding traces of microplastics
Does that surprise you? Because it certainly did us.
The issue of microplastics is clearly extremely widespread. But we’ve created Gulp, a microplastic filter, to minimise the amount that is released into the ocean after every single wash🧺🌊 and in turn, contribute to bringing down those statistics📉.

Environmental startup to feature in Grand Designs' live show Its eco-friendly device has caught Kevin McCloud's attention
Did you know that Gulp’s unique technology requires no disposable filters or cartridges? That’s right, unlike other microplastic filters, you can simply empty Gulp after 20 washes and reuse it over and over again🧺
This means that as a proud Gulp owner, not only are you stopping tiny pieces of plastic from entering our ocean, but you’re cutting the usage of unnecessary disposable plastic🌊✂️

It’s World Wetlands Day 🌱💧
Wetlands are critically important ecosystems that contribute to biodiversity, climate mitigation and adaptation, freshwater availability, world economies and more.
35% of the world’s wetlands have disappeared in the last 50 years. Plastic pollution, including from our clothes, are one of the biggest threats our wetlands are facing.
Here are some small things you can do to help:
📚 Visit The Rivers Trust to learn more about wetlands and how you can support restoration work
🧺 Fuller loads, lower wash temperatures and washing clothes less can all help reduce microfibre pollution from our homes
💧 Check out our microfibre filter Gulp, a washing machine filter that swallows microplastics from your laundry before they enter our precious waterways

It’s National Geographic Day!🌍
In 2018, National Geographic reported that 18 billion pounds of plastic ends up in the ocean each year. That’s about 8 million tonnes…
However, recent estimates from the IUCN indicate this number has risen to at least 14 million tonnes being dumped into the ocean yearly. That’s a huge increase of 6 million tonnes in just 3 years😳
Although the magnitude of this issue can feel daunting, raising awareness and educating about climate issues is crucial to inspiring action. We are grateful for the efforts of National Geographic in bringing attention to the issue of plastic pollution and its impact on our oceans. We'll continue to play our part at Gulp through our work tackling microplastic pollution from laundry 🧺
Throwback to last week's lunch club feast with the team!
On the menu: Butternut Squash and Chickpea Tagine followed by a heavenly chocolate mousse cake 😋🍰
We've been working hard behind the scenes, but it's always great to take a break and enjoy delicious food and conversation🙌
Happy new year Gulpers!🌟
We hope you all managed to enjoy a bit of a break over the holidays and feeling ready to take on the year ahead 💙
It may be a new year, but we’re going straight into 2023 with the same mission - to stop plastic pollution from laundry 🧺🌊
Who’s with us?👀
It’s been one heck of a year for us at Gulp, and before we wrap up for the holidays and let the Christmas celebrations begin, we just wanted to say a massive thank you to every single person that has supported us on our journey this year💙
We are thrilled to be ending the year on the ultimate high after the huge success of our Gulp Kickstarter campaign, raising over $150,000 and reaching over 1000 supporters 😲
We're looking forward to getting our product into thousands of homes across the UK and Europe next year and continuing to grow our community of supporters that want to join us on our mission to stop plastic pollution from laundry 🌊
On behalf of everyone here at Gulp, we wish you all a very happy and festive holiday season! 🎄
Work hard, party hard… There’s a motto that we live by here at Matter HQ!
After an extremely busy year working on solutions to minimise the number of microplastics entering our oceans🌊 (and other various places they don’t belong), our team took to Bristol city centre to celebrate our Christmas party.
Good food was eaten, memories were made, and we looked to 2023 with determination to continue making a real difference💙
How are you celebrating the year’s end?🎄💫
For every 500 t-shirts made, 1 t-shirt is lost in microfibre pollution 👕
On average, 2 billion t-shirts are produced per year. That equates to over 4 million t-shirts being washed down the drain 💧
With the majority of our clothes now being made up of synthetic materials, this is just one example of how our clothes are contributing to the colossal plastic problem in our oceans ❌🌊
Raising awareness of this issue is a fundamental step towards encouraging change. At Matter, we will continue to raise awareness of pollution from textiles and campaign for change whilst developing innovative solutions like Gulp to stop microfibre pollution at source 🤚
