Here we have two Certified Fire Shutters with a 1 hour fire rating each that have been installed between a kitchen area and hall at a school.
These shutters can be used on daily as normal shutters operating from wall mounted key switches but they are also connected to the fire alarm system and will close automatically on receiving a signal from the fire alarm panel in the event of a fire.

A new shop front roller shutter installed by About Security this week to replace an old worn out non compliant shutter.
This new shutter is electrical operation an made from steel to give maximum protection to the glazed shop front behind.
The shutter has been manufactured with a centrifugal safety brake to comply with current Health & Safety Regulations, a lot of old shutters will not have safety brakes fitted and as such the owners of the shutters will be imminently faced with replacing the shutters or where possible retro fitting safety brakes to bring the shutters up to compliance however it is not always possible to fit safety brakes to all old shutters for a price that is economically viable so new shutters are the only answer in such cases.

A new electrical operation aluminium roller shutter recently installed at Avon Valley Railway Cafe to replace an old aluminium shutter that had done its job for many years.
This new shutter is manufactured from high quality German Heroal aluminium profiles with the shutter curtain manufactured from twin walled aluminium laths filled with a very hard resin infill, it operates very quietly compared to the old shutter.

The importance or regular roller shutter inspection, servicing and lubrication is likely not to be at the top of most shop owners list of priorities but in todays market the cost of serious repairs can greatly outway the cost of preventetive servicing and lubrication as long as this is done to the correct standards.
In contrast we do have customers who insist on annually servicing their shutters to keep them in good condition and this has paid dividends over the years for trouble free operation and reliability.
Large roller shutters such as shop front shutters covering areas where people can walk underneath the shutter when it is in the open position will have safety brakes fitted to comply with current laws, it is very important that these are inspected at least every 12 months so that any potential problems can be picked up before they cause any further damage to motors or the shutter itself.
We have seen badly fixed shutters pulled away from the wall or shop front when a safety brake activates especially if a more powerful motor than necessary is installed within the shutter barrel.
Inspection of these safety brakes is a critical part of a secrvice and lubrication carried out by About Security.
If a roller shutter serviced is not fitted with an appropriate brake or fall back device we will advise the customer as to the best coures of action to achieve compliance with the regulations.

The attached picture shows a safety brake with a cracked casing that was replace with a new brake when undergoing the repair of this shutter, as the brake had seized up it had also destroyed the shutter motor that also needed to be replaced to return the shutter to working order.

Here we have roller shutters with punched curtains for situations where visibility or airflow through the closed shutter is also important.
This style of shutter can be manufactured from steel or aluminium depending on application and overall sizes required.
These style of open curtains have been used by About Security for applications such as estate agent windows, bar shutters, commercial shop fronts and also shutters where maximum airflow is required with the shutter closed such as restaurant kitchens and high voltage substations where airflow is very important for cooling and venting the building.
We have installed these punched shutter curtains in retail shops usually fitted over the rear doorway of shops to allow a constant through draft of air with the security of having the shutter closed, we also use retractable security grilles for this purpose as they provide another option to have security with ventillation.

Fixed welded security grilles fabricated and installed by About Security to enhance the security over several pvc windows of a commercial property, the existing straps across the windows did not give adequate protection as they were spaced too wide apart, new grilles have been fitted to provide gaps no bigger than 100mm between the bars that are manufactured from solid steel 20mm diameter bar welded to steel outer framework and finished in black paint.

Here we have a manual operation galvanized steel roller shutter maufactured and installed by About Security in Bristol recently to close off a recessed doorway area and to add security to the timber entrance door of the building, this customer wanted the additional security that this shutter offered and had only recently taken over the shop.

However there are many increasing instances where roller shutters are being installed to close off access to recessed shop front doorways of business premises not only to protect the door from being attacked and prevent burglary but also to prevent the open recessed area being used as a living space by others or even worse being used a toilet area when the shop is closed, out of hours.
Unfortunately as a lot of public toilets are now locked up or closed off completely for public use then this problem has become more and more common in the city.

An electrical operation roller shutter recently installed to close the loading bay entrance of a new build unit in Bristol.
Our customer has requested the Plastisol curtain fitted to this shutter as one we previously installed on another of this customers units around 20 years ago is still in good conditions and weathered very well in a commercial enviroment.
The new shutter in the picture has the galvanized steelwork finished in polyester powder coat paint finish RAL 7016 anthracite grey to match the anthracite colour plastic coated galvanized steel curtain.
