It’s today, so it’s fitting to celebrate the success of "The Power of Empathy" - an RSA Short where Brené Brown reminds us that we can only create a genuine empathic connection if we are brave enough to really get in touch with our own fragilities.

Buuut my website has a request to send me pictures of dogs, and I'm always surprised how many I actually get. Got this one today and it made me feel a little less grumpy. Only a little.

Very very cool technology... but it does make me wonder about my job if everyone can make their illustrations move seamlessly, this easily. Will there still be a place for traditional animators if the technology continues down this path?

I’ve had loads of fun whipping the ol’ colouring pencils out for Superdoodle’s new animation for Camp IHC. It’s quite a long process compared to magic wand > fill but I have so missed these kind of back to basics textures. I used to use loads more textures in my earlier work but that died down a bit with the practicalities of doing my job efficiently enough. But, once in while, it’s worth having a play with styles and having fun!

Super happy to be working with Superdoodle on another animation for Camp IHC, a summer camp based in Pennsylvania in the US (see our previous one here: https://superdoodle.co/work/the-psychology-of-camp/).

It’s fab working for this client because they’re really encouraging and excited when we discuss ideas, and they gave the thumbs up when I suggested we use colouring pencils for the backgrounds of this new video. I’ve been experimenting with that and, apart from having given myself blisters on my fingers, have been pleased with how it’s going! When was the last time you used coloured pencils? It’s therapeutic!

Really excited to say that I’m working on my 7th Happify animation. Here’s some character development of the main character, who I’ve named Rebecca, with her pal Dan.

Created with traditional hand-drawn animation techniques to capture the unique style of Quentin Blake’s artwork, the programme will be part of a long and established tradition of Channel 4’s animated Christmas specials such as The Snowman, The Tiger Who Came to Tea, and We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.

Well well well… back to work after well over a year of concentrated mumming. I had been on maternity leave until March and then the world turned upside down, and childcare options were in the bin with no way to dedicate any time to animating. I’ve really missed my work but it’s been glorious making memories with my two wee sprogs. Now the kids are back in nursery/school it’s back to work for me! I am thrilled to have some clients waiting for me and have some exciting projects to sink my teeth into. Starting off with drawing puffins! Here’s some character development I’ve started this week.
