This duck and 13 ducklings (we think - they move so fast!) were escorted from @corpuscambridge through Catz this afternoon - on their way to @queens_college and the river @cambridgeuniversity #CambridgeUniversity #CollegeLife #DucksOfInstagram #Ducklings #DucklingsOfInstagram

Rain, sponges and buckets of cold water couldn't dampen the enthusiasm of our May Ball Committee, who raised £130 for Jimmy's Cambridge at an end-of-term fundraiser (each sponge thrown raised £1). There's now less than 3 months to go 'til the Ball on 20 June. Tickets are still available via https://linktr.ee/catzmayball

Our Master Sir John Benger (1979, English) has added his words of encouragement to this new video encouraging students to reach out for support. Featuring leaders from across Cambridge, it has been released for University Mental Health Day (14 March). Further information about the support available can be found at studentsupport.cam.ac.uk or caths.cam.ac.uk/welfare-hub/students #ReachOutCambridge

We're pleased that alumnus Xander Byrne (2019, Natural Sciences) who is back for an Astronomy PhD features in this new video marking University Mental Health Day (14 March). It encourages students to reach out to the different sources of support available, which includes our Health & Wellbeing team at Catz. Visit studentsupport.cam.ac.uk or caths.cam.ac.uk/welfare-hub/students

For Holocaust Memorial Day, we follow Catz Fellow Dr Gilly Carr (2006) and her journey to this week’s launch of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) Charter for Safeguarding Sites. Alumna Amy Wilkinson (2017, Natural Sciences) is back at Catz for a PhD in Biological Sciences thanks to a Harding Distinguished Postgraduate Scholarship, and has appeared in a new video about participating in a public dialogue project on cutting-edge human embryo research now that proposals to modernise the law in this area are being considered. As tonight is the longest night of the year, check out this video of the sun’s point in the sky over Cambridge at the same time of the day over the last 12 months, with the winter solstice at the bottom. This shape is known as an analemma and was created by one of our student photographers throughout the seasons since November 2022, using only their mobile phone and Python coding (analemmas are usually produced using fixed cameras set at the same angle)

We've given prospective applicants on TikTok a peek inside the start of a Chemistry lecture by Prof. Peter Wothers MBE (1988, Natural Sciences; Fellow 1997) as an example of how our Fellows are involved in teaching in Cambridge. Thank you to Michael Webb and the Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry for this timelapse video. (Music by the Chemical Brothers of course!)

A beautiful hummingbird hawk moth visited the flower beds at the front of Main Court, which were intentionally planted to support biodiversity. Catz students, staff and Fellows interested in the College's biodiversity activities are welcome to come along to the next Green Working Group meeting: https://www.caths.cam.ac.uk/about-us/news-and-events/green-working-group-meeting-6 (Video by Dr Maria Dias)

The Catz Telephone Campaign has started well and our callers have enjoyed their many engaging conversations with our alumni. Thank you so much to everyone who has taken the time to speak with our callers and made a gift so far. Here’s two of the team sharing why your support makes such a difference. The NHS turns 75 today 🎂 Its foundation in 1948 was an important milestone for us to include when we created a short timeline last month about the history of medicine as a subject, at the University of Cambridge and at Catz since we were founded in 1473. If you like this clip, the full 5-minute video and transcript are available at caths.cam.ac.uk/history-of-medicine

We're gearing up for our Open Days (6–8 July) and looking forward to showing lots of prospective students what it is like to live and study at Catz. Find out more and book a spot at caths.cam.ac.uk/OpenDays. We are also piloting a new TikTok profile (@Catz_Cambridge) to share admissions information over the next few months and to reach more prospective students aged 16-18 years old.

Catz alumnus John Addenbrooke died on this day in 1719, so we thought it was a fitting tribute to produce a short timeline about the history of medicine as a subject, at St Catharine's and at the University of Cambridge since we were founded in 1473. If you like this clip, the full 5-minute video and transcript are available at caths.cam.ac.uk/history-of-medicine

Catz eyes on the skies 😍 Summer has started to arrive in Cambridge and one of our student photographers captured this timelapse footage of the changing clouds visible from two different windows in College.

Today is Earth Day so what better day to celebrate our Environment Fellow Professor Bill Sutherland CBE 💚 His conservation expertise was on display this week when he helped a family of ducks to find the river and has resulted in a prestigious prize from the International Ecology Institute. Congratulations to the Catz undergraduates who returned triumphant from the recent Varsity Ski Trip and are now planning to create a club for alpine skiing.
