Nest making this week to highlight Big Garden Bird Watch to my learners.
Made alongside the lovely story about why different birds make different nests its a great inclusive activity for learners of all ages. Mother nature gave me a little gift today from the recent winds as one of the children found a nest that had blown out of a tree .... wonderful serendipitous moment ... we reflected on how sad that was for the bird that made it. So much learning !!
To make a nest ..
Take a bowl and invite the learners to take turns spooning some mud into the bowl to make the base.
Ask them if they would like to add some small sticks.
Then take a piece of birch twigs (hopefully there should be lots of these about because of the wind ... we are always collecting them as they are great for getting the fire going π₯) Twist the birch and coil it in to a wreath shape then add on top of the bowl to make the sides of the nest.
Then encourage them to add some more mud.
Finally they can add some soft materials like Feathers to make it cozy ..... Voila .. a nest π¦π¦π¦
As I dig deep to plough through January and February my soul tells me to seek shelter, hibernate, gravitate to warmth and Wellness.... but my schedule is sessions outdoors...ploughing on. I start all my sessions at this time of year with a reminder we are fostering a love of the outdoors and this is not an endurance test π

Recipe -
350g Plain Flour
2 teaspoons ground ginger
1 teaspoon bicarb of soda
100g marg
175g soft light brown sugar
1 egg
4 tablespoons golden syrup
Sieve the dry ingredients. Rub in the marg, mix the egg and syrup and then add and bring to a dough. Roll out, cut (it's sticky so you will need lots of extra flour) and bake for about 10 minutes at 190c 375f or gas mark 5 .
Merry Christmas π

Wonderful end to our year of Women in the woods with some new faces and some regulars . We crafted and chatted round the fire coming together to just be for a couple of hours. As I walked back from the loo at one point I could hear the chatter and laughter coming from the campfire and my heart was filled right up π
This really is a special space π

Vygotsky says "it must not be forgotten that the basic law of children's creativity is that it's value lies not in it's results, not in the product of creation, but in the process itself".
