After our two lido shows this summer it’s easy to forget that most of our performances have taken place on dry land, so to speak. So in eight days, our performance at The Commemoration Hall in Huntingdon on Friday 29 September will be a homecoming of sorts, back on a stage and using physical theatre to tell Captain Webb’s story. Huge congratulations to Sophie Etheridge, who has just completed the longest ever Channel swim, at just over 29 hours! We’re honoured that she was in the audience for our performance at Jesus Green Lido on 12 August, and know that Captain Webb would be proud!

A new world record!

Unofficial success on 22 August: 1-way solo Sophie Etheridge, in an awe-inspiring time of 29:04, pilot Lance Oram.

What an epic and heroic swim which can only really be appreciated from standing back and looking at the full track... once ratified the record passes from one phenomenal swimmer, Jackie Cobell, to a worthy successor, Sophie Etheridge! Congratulations!

We’re just ten days from our return performance at Jesus Green Lido, so we thought we would introduce you to some of the real characters who populate the story of Captain Matthew Webb, the first person to swim the English Channel. The first photo is the man himself; the second is Webb’s great rival Paul Boyton (sporting ‘Merriman’s Patent Waterproof Lifesaving Device); the third is Professor Frederick Beckwith, Webb’s trainer and sometime promoter; and the fourth is William (son of Frederick) Beckwith, who swam against Webb. To find out how these men interacted in the fascinating world of Victorian sport, come along to the show on 12 August when all will become clear. Here’s the link for tickets:

Three weeks till we return to Jesus Green Lido for another performance of Nothing Great Is Easy: The Story of the First Channel Swimmer. With the weather rather disappointing at the moment, we’re hoping it’s going to come good for us on 12 August, just like it did for our previous performance on 10 June when we had glorious sunshine.
