Last week Cambridge's Rory Finnin gave a speech at the Crimean Platform Summit in Kyiv, alongside First Lady Olena Zelenska and Mustafa Dzhemilev. Some of his remarks:
"For too long Western academics have failed Ukraine... We have been too focused on the spectacle of Russia's empire. We have not paid enough attention to the voices of resistance to empire...
"Our failure has led to a grave misunderstanding of the historical depths of Russian colonialist aggression and to a significant underestimation of Ukrainian political culture and civil society. These misunderstandings and these underestimations sadly persist to this day."

Today, Cambridge Ukrainian Studies shares the grief of the Ukrainian people. It has been a tragic few days. Yesterday, on the 3 September, two Russian ballistic missiles struck an educational facility and hospital in the central Ukrainian city of Poltava killing at least 51 people and wounding more than 200 others. Today at about 05:40 (02:40 GMT), the Russians targeted the western Ukrainian city of Lviv. According to the Russia's defence ministry Kinzhal hypersonic weapons were fired at Ukrainian defence industry facilities in Lviv and all designated targets were hit.
In reality, the hypersonic weapons damaged more than 50 buildings in the historic centre of Lviv, including homes, schools and clinics. Among the targets hit were Ievhenia, and her three daughters -Darina, Emiliia and Iaryna. They all died in their home; their father survived. The ensemble of Lviv's historic centre is UNESCO protected; Russia is still a member of UNESCO. How is all this possible?

Congratulations to Oleksandr Khyzhniak for winning the golden medal in boxing at the 2024 Paris Olympics! Khyzhniak was the only Ukrainian boxer to reach the finals of the 2024 Olympics in Paris. He secured the victory in the fight against Nubrek Oralbay from Kazakhstan.

Kinsella is an experienced translator with over a decade of work under her belt, and has been recognized with numerous awards such as being a finalist of the Griffin Poetry Prize, the Derek Walcott Prize for Poetry, American Literary Translators Association (ALTA)’s National Translation Award in Poetry, and winning the AAUS Prize for Translation, among others. She's translated a lot of poetry (Natalka Bilotserkivets and Halyna Kruk in particular) and prose, and has been working on Vasyl Makhno's novel and essays.
Teresa Pearce has worked as part of a team to transform the English-language edition of Ukraine's leading newspaper, Українська правда, and make it into the valuable collection of information on Ukraine that it is now.
William Ronald Debnam is a PhD student at Columbia University and a very promising translator who's not afraid to take on tough texts—such as Mykola Kulish's "Myna Mazailo," for example. He's currently working on translating a Volodymyr Vynnychenko sci-fi dystopian novel!
Romana Mykhailevych is a talented finalist of the Ukraine Global Scholars program and is currently a BA student at Yale University, majoring in Comparative Literature with a concentration in Translation. She has done a lot of very valuable work translating testimonies of Ukrainian refugees for a Yale Archive project, excerpts from '77 Days of February' about Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine, poetry by Tetiana Vlasova, and Vasyl Stus's diaries.

Discover the history of art in Ukraine on a weekend course, taught by art historians and curators.
As we present the most comprehensive UK exhibition about modernist art in Ukraine, this weekend course will explore a rich history of creativity that paved the way for the flourishing of artistic styles that make up modernism in Ukraine.
From traditional Ukrainian folk art to the influence of Byzantine mosaics and frescoes and Baroque architecture on Ukrainian culture, we will uncover the range of artistic styles and cultural identities that make up the history of Ukrainian art.
We will look at the ways in which modernist artists such as Kazymyr Malevych, Alexandra Exter and El Lissitzky built on the blending of Ukrainian, Polish, Russian and Jewish cultures to formulate their distinct artistic styles. Participants will have the opportunity to encounter new and lesser-known works by Ukrainian artists, as well as to reassess Ukrainian artists and artworks that have often been misidentified as Russian.
Over the weekend, participants will learn from a range of experts, from art historians to curators, and are encouraged to engage in discussion and debate.

Marvel at the groundbreaking modernist art made in Ukraine between 1900 and the 1930s.
The modernist movement in Ukraine unfolded against a backdrop of collapsing empires, the First World War, the fight for independence, and the eventual establishment of Soviet Ukraine. Despite such profound upheaval, this became a period of bold artistic experimentation, and true flourishing of art, literature and theatre in Ukraine.
Highlighting the range of artistic styles and cultural identities that existed in Ukraine during this period, this is the most comprehensive UK exhibition to date about modern art in Ukraine. Explore 65 works, from oil paintings and sketches to collage and theatre design. Many are on loan from the National Art Museum of Ukraine and the Museum of Theatre, Music and Cinema of Ukraine in Kyiv.
In the Eye of the Storm brings together the work of such artists as Kazymyr Malevych, Sonia Delaunay, Alexandra Exter and El Lissitzky, as well as lesser-known figures like Oleksandr Bohomazov and Mykhailo Boichuk, each of whom left an indelible mark on the country’s art and culture.

Experience the UK premiere of 'Magura', a short film dedicated to the missing people of war. Following the screening, engage in a thought-provoking panel discussion with experts from politics, journalism, psychology, and individuals personally affected by this crucial issue. The event will conclude with a Q&A session with the director - Anna Starushkevych, the videographer - Paul Bradshaw and the panellists.
Magura is a Ukrainian pagan goddess of war and victory. The short film, produced by the 'Music Will Save The World' non-profit - founded by an opera singer Anna Starushkevych - is based on an operatic aria by Handel and composed of three parts: pre-war serene past, present reality of war, future - one year after Ukraine won the war.
Admission: Free (Donations Welcome). Raised funds will go to UAid International and will be used to support families whose loved ones are missing and organisations like 'Place d'armes' that search for missing persons in Ukraine.

New humanitarian response fund to support students affected by conflict
The University of Cambridge has announced a new fund to support students facing financial struggles as a result of significant conflict or humanitarian crisis. Students who may, for example, be facing difficulties in completing their course or returning home as planned during, or immediately after, their studies, will be able to apply for financial help. Grants will be available to help to meet an unexpected shortfall in living costs, as well as exceptional caring responsibilities associated with conflict or crisis. This is in addition to any awards made by Colleges, and the University’s standard financial assistance award.
Those eligible to apply will be current students at the University (undergraduate and postgraduate taught and research):
whose homes are in conflict zones and humanitarian crises as defined by the UNICEF Level 2 and Level 3 Emergencies List: currently, Palestine, Sudan, the DRC, Haiti, plus Myanmar, eastern Chad, Ethiopia, Ukraine and Mali, and/or with Refugee, Asylum Seeker, or Humanitarian Protection status who are able to show evidence that they have a valid Asylum Registration Card or Biometric Residence Permit, and/or who have valid permission to remain in the UK and where the situation in their home country prevents them from travelling home and they are forced to remain in Cambridge.
The University has pledged £100,000, and it is hoped this will be augmented by philanthropic donations. Full details of the fund and how to apply to it will be published as soon as possible.

Рорі Фіннін, професор українських студій Кембриджського університету, написав статтю «Деокупація Криму в західній свідомості», де вчений прослідковує історичну спадщину кримськотатарської автономії після Першої світової війни та її прогресивного керівного органу, Курултаю. Фіннін витягає кримську історію з лещат кремлівських пропагандистських міфів та закликає до когнітивної деокупації півострова від століттями насадженого російського колоніалізму, а також візуалізує майбутній вільний Крим у складі України.
✏ «Крим є точкою, звідки почалася загарбницька війна Росії проти України, найбільший і найнебезпечніший збройний конфлікт в Європі з часів Другої світової війни».
✏ «Очевидним є те, що робота з когнітивної деокупації Криму в західній уяві тільки почалася. На наших ментальних картах кримський політичний та культурний простір залишається в полоні кремлівських міфологій і туманних банальностей про його «священне» місце в російській історії та пам’яті».
✏ «Але для кримських татар Крим не є об’єктом. Це не територія, якою можна володіти. Для найбільшого корінного народу півострова, мусульман-сунітів, тюркомовної нації, Крим є частиною їхньої колективної суб’єктності — не «Крим — наш», а «Крим — це ми». Тісний зв’язок між кримськими татарами та їхньою прабатьківщиною спростовує путінське твердження про Крим як нібито споконвічно російську землю».
✏ «Курултай 1917 року став уособленням найпрогресивнішого політичного органу в історії мусульманського світу».
✏ «При формуванні Курултаю Челебіджихан та його колеги ставили на передній план кримських татар як титульну націю Криму, але водночас прагнули представляти інтереси всіх жителів півострова, незалежно від їхнього етнічного, релігійного чи мовного походження. Вони були віддані ідеї права на «свободу особистості, висловлювання, преси, совісті, зборів, житла» та багато іншого. Особлива увага також приділялася просуванню прав жінок».
✏ «Визнання історичних заслуг чоловіків і жінок, які стояли за Курултаєм, допомагає нам звільнити Чорноморський півострів із лещат кремлівських міфів і обману. Це один із кроків до деокупації Криму в нашій свідомості. Це також і погляд на довгу історію українсько-кримськотатарської солідарності, яка ніколи не була такою очевидною, як сьогодні».
In May we remember how the Kremlin sought to destroy the Crimean Tatars, Ukraine's Sunni Muslim Indigenous people.
But we also remember how the Kremlin failed. How the Crimean Tatars fought back and returned home from exile. This poem by Maye Safet, which was read in Cambridge by our friend and colleague Ediie Kataman, imagines the day when "the enemy leaves". Ми ще на один день ближче до перемоги.

On Saturday, Cambridge Ukrainian Studies again teamed up with Germany's Federal Agency for Civic Education and participated in a special public event about resistance in Crimea at the Berlin State Library. The evening involved an introductory presentation by Cambridge's Rory Finnin, who spoke with legendary Crimean Tatar leader and Hero of Ukraine Mustafa Jemilev about fear, non-violent resistance, and the urgency of defeating Russian aggression. The event featured pivotal interventions by Tamila Ravil Qızı Tasheva, the outstanding Permanent Representative of the President of Ukraine in Crimea, who was in conversation with historian Wilfried Jilge, as well as a reading by and discussion with Anatasiia Levkova, author of the bestselling novel Za Perekopom ie zemlia. Kateryna Mishchenko, Kateryna Stetsevych and the entire BpB team deserve our praise and thanks for organising this extraordinary public event at such a critical time.

Today Germany's Federal Agency for Civic Education is hosting a special event in Berlin devoted to the theme of resistance in Crimea. The speakers include Mustafa Dzhemilev, leader of the Crimean Tatar people; Tamila Tasheva, Permanent Representative of the President of Ukraine to the Republic of Crimea; celebrated writer Anastasia Levkova; and Cambridge's Rory Finnin. The event has been advertised on Berlin's metro system this week, thanks to our friends at Ukrainer.

Юлія Козиряцька, координаторка Ukraїner International:
— У нас було лише 30 секунд. Ми хотіли представити Крим через цінності, мову його корінного населення — кримських татар. [...] Їхня мова — символ стійкості Криму, його боротьби та свободи. Також Берлін — достатньо інтернаціональне місто. Там багато турецького населення, а кримськотатарська і турецька мови схожі, тому ми використовували схожі слова на початку відео.
— Я щаслива, що ми мали змогу нагадати людям в Європі, зокрема в Берліні, про окупацію Криму росіянами, що Крим — це Україна. Сподіваюся, ми змогли зацікавити людей і вони прийдуть на подію, бо саме там зможуть набагато більше дізнатися про Крим, поспілкуватися з кримськими татарами.
Катерина Міщенко, яка працює у Федеральному центрі політичної освіти в Німеччині, каже, що в контексті Криму важливо говорити не лише про російську агресію, а й про українську політичну субʼєктність.
— Ми хочемо деконструювати імперський образ Криму як «природно» російського простору. [...] Ми нагадуємо, що півострів вже 10 років окуповано, із захоплення Криму почалася війна.
— [Крим] — це той український простір, який десять років тому став такою собі фігурою замовчування в міжнародному контексті. — Ми хочемо розширити знання про Крим та зробити видимими проєкти українського спротиву. Це лише один захід, їх має бути сотні, щоби мінялася громадська думка. Ми плануємо надалі працювати над цієї темою, щоб повертати Криму видимість. Як на мене, інтерес [до заходів про Україну] є, але все залежить від форматів. У нас багато європейських спільних історій, які ще не були розказані.

This morning Russian forces hit the centre of Chernihiv, an important early Rus’ and Cossack city rich in medieval and early modern monuments. We already know that lives were lost and injuries abound. Cambridge Ukrainian Studies sends condolences to the families of all those who died or suffered in the attack, as well as to all the people of Chernihiv and Ukraine. We share your pain and stand with you in solidarity for the freedom and sovereignty of Ukraine. We petition the US Congress and the EU to send sufficient air defence systems and weapons for Ukraine to defend its people and lands.

'Net Making' is the title of Ukraine’s exhibition-pavilion in this year’s Venice Biennale, the international exhibition of global art world that highlights the current geopolitical mood. 'Net Making' references the communal volunteer activity of knotting together camouflage nets for the war effort and also alludes to the act of making connections, reaching beyond artists’ own voices into communities. This year will be the first time the Ukrainian pavilion will present art made in the thick of invasion – art that shows something of what it is like to have lived for two years under the shadow of aggression and violence.

Advancing New Approaches to the Study of Ukraine
Cambridge Ukrainian Studies, an academic centre at the University of Cambridge, aims to promote and contribute to the study of Ukraine in the United Kingdom and beyond. It is committed to deepening public understanding of Ukraine and to advancing fresh, innovative approaches to research on the largest country within Europe, a critical crossroads between 'East' and 'West' with a rich historical, linguistic, and cultural inheritance.
While its primary focus is on the literature and culture of Ukraine, Cambridge Ukrainian Studies seeks to explore – and challenge – conventional notions of disciplinary and geographical borders and to foster a lively exchange between artists, scholars, politicians, and the wider public, as well as between institutions of higher learning in Ukraine, Europe, and North America.
