Another today to November of 1966, when I joined J.J. Johnson in the studio to record his album "The Total J.J. Johnson." J.J. was one of my musical inspirations, and I was glad to have the opportunity to play with him.
The first time I saw J.J. Johnson play live, I noticed how he found all the notes so close to the bell. He didn’t have to go further. I studied trombone in college for my degree, and so I was amazed at how J.J. found all those arrangements of notes by not going a long way from the bell. I thought, if that’s possible on the trombone, it must be possible for the bass—to play across the bass rather than up and down the neck to find the same group of notes. I started experimenting on my own, and developed my own bass methods for the same effect.
Also on "The Total J.J. Johnson" roster: Art Farmer, , , , , Snooky Young 1919-2011 , , , and .
