Isometric Strength For Sports Performance... ... Isometric Strength training in simple terms relates to muscle contractions without any joint movement e.g plank, rack pulls or wall sit ... Related to Rugby Specifically isometric training can be useful for these situations where isometric contractions occur - Scrums - Making tackles - Breaking tackles - Ruck time contesting - Mauls ... As part of strength development for @medwayrfc under 18's S&C sessions I threw in a bit of tug of war .. Not only is it fun but it also challenges the boys to maintain strong isometric contractions both in upper and lower extremities .. Demanding the intent of effort required no motivation as the competitive nature of the exercise maximised their ability to produce as much force as possible for that short period of work! ... Other benefits of isometric training is that it: - Doesn't create as much muscle soreness as high intense eccentric (lengthening) contractions can produce -Allows the athlete to produce maximal force for prolonged periods of time Genuine pleasure working with this Rugby club and all coaches ....

Deadlift Day - Having seen improvements with squat numbers of late it's nice to see it transfer over to my deadlift with 200kg for 5 reps. I struggled a bit with the knees coming on in the last few reps but some extra glute work should fix that!
Friday Frustration..Working hard on Olympic lifts drills today. Didn't quite hit the range I was after but struggled with grip today. 8 reps on Hang Cleans at 100kg. Always take positives from a session- Today's was that legs felt fairly strong throughout!
There is no magic secret to getting stronger! Just hard work, good form, appropriate recovery and simple programming. I'm currently half way through my Back Squat strength program. I fancied seeing where I was and matched my Personal Best of 180kg from 2 years ago (when I was training a lot more consistently). If you're after some guidance on improving your strength numbers give me a shout :)
Motivation Monday! Consistency is key! I've been training Rob now for over 6 years and daaaamn has he progressed! On the left you'll see Rob holding an alcoholic drink which used to be a huge part of his Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights during the majority of his 30's and Rob will agree that bodyweight strength for him then was holding up his hand to wave down a cab home! On the right is Rob this weekend gone, leaner, stronger and happier completing Men's Health Survival Of The Fittest 2017. He knocked 22 minutes off his time from last year! and demonstrates fantastic bodyweight strength smashing the rope climbs and rings obstacles! Making the change is one thing, staying consistent and progressing deserves even more praise, well done Rob!👍🏽💪🏽
