Celebrated composer, Gustav Holst, was born in Cheltenham on 21st September, 1874, and is best known for the orchestral suite The Planets. As part of a town-wide celebration on his 150th birthday, we are pleased to present a special screening of this biographical documentary, followed by a Q&A with acclaimed director Tony Palmer.
Holst led an extraordinary life; he taught himself Sanskrit, lived in a street of brothels in Algiers, cycled into the Sahara Desert and allied himself during the First World War with a ‘red priest’ who pinned on the door of his church “prayers at noon for the victims of Imperial Aggression”.
Palmer’s film combines wonderful renditions of some of his best-known works with insightful interviews, including Holst’s daughter Imogen and former colleagues and pupils of his.

SPECIAL GUEST: We are joined for the opening night film of Timestalker by its writer/director/star, Alice Lowe. The film has received unanimous praise from critics, scoring 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. CheltFilmFest – Timestalker
Sep 13 @ 7:00 pm - 9:45 pm
Groundhog Day meets Monty Python in Alice Lowes long awaited follow up to Prevenge.
As well as writing and directing this entertaining anti-romcom, Lowe takes the lead role as the hopelessly lovesick Agness, who is continuously reincarnated to relive the same doomed romance. Beginning in 1688, she finds herself overcome with love for a handsome heretic preacher – just as he is about to be executed – and then trips over her dog and fatally poleaxes herself. She is immediately reincarnated a 100 years later, and falls for a strikingly similar man, only for it to lead to another gruesome death. Repeating through the centuries with similarly gory results each time, the object of her unrequited infatuation takes various guises – landed gentry, highwayman, rock star – but is always a complete and utter jerk.
Playfully deconstructing the romcom, Agnese’s futile search for eternal love is a riot of absurdist laughs, colourful characters and flamboyant costumes, while remaining surprisingly insightful in its exploration of romantic obsession.

THIS IS MY MOTHER
Tackling bi-polar disorder with heart and humour, this tender autobiographical drama is a tragicomic delight
Pierre, a successful 33-year-old florist, sees his life upended when his flamboyant and unpredictable mother, Judith, suddenly reappears after a two-year absence. Suffering from bi-polar disorder, Judith brings a whirlwind of anxiety, guilt, and painful memories. Their reunion, both unexpected and explosive, sets in motion a chain of events that will change their lives forever.

A fictionalised account of the two remarkable women behind the pioneering Montessori schools
French Courtesan Lili d’Alengy travels to Rome to bring her learning-disabled daughter to an institute for special needs children, run by the titular Maria and Giuseppe. Maria is a woman taking the role of a man, and as such is not paid for her inspirational work, yet she is no less committed to helping ‘idiot’ children who would otherwise be cast out of society. Seeing past their exteriors, she treats them like any other class, with results that far exceed any expectations of the fiercely misogynistic society of the turn of the 20th century.
This inspiring story of two head strong women on parallel journeys of motherhood and emancipation is brought to the screen with sumptuous photography, lavish production design and a pair of winning performances.

A Normal Family
Hur Jin-ho
Successful lawyer Jae-wan and his brother Jae-gyu , a doctor, and their wives regularly dine together at expensive restaurants. Jae Wan has recently taken on defending a savage road rage case involving a brattish trustafarian who hopes he can buy his way out of trouble, while Jae-gyu holds high personal ideals and puts his patients ahead of his own interests. These conflicting standards come to a head during one of these dinners, when it becomes apparent that their teenage children have committed an unforgivably callous crime which has implications for all of them.
Hur Jin-ho’s meticulously constructed drama probes an uncomfortable moral dilemma from opposing viewpoints as their differing ideals and principles are eroded by a testing real life situation. Four superb performances draw on an incisive script adapted from Herman Koch’s novel The Dinner, revealing a complex web of social and personal issues and motivations. Food for thought indeed.

Girls Will Be Girls
Shuchi Talati
Set in an Indian boarding school, this superbly crafted first feature explores the complex dynamic that evolves when A list head prefect Mira brings home her dashing “study pal” Sri. Her youthful mother Anila knows full well what is really going on but tolerates their burgeoning relationship under her careful watch. Anila’s relationship with Sri soon turns flirtatious as she attempts to reignite a lost youth. A patriarchal society looks on with disapproval.
First-time actress Preeti Panigrahi is captivating as Mira in this remarkably refined first feature. Intimate camera work and deft performances capture stolen moments, the playfulness, excitement and fear of first love, awkward s*x scenes and mother-daughter tensions with great authenticity

We Have Never Been Modern
Matej Chlupacek
In 1930’s Czechoslovakia, the co**se of a newborn inters*x child is found sitting in rubble at a newly built chemical plant. It might sound like the setup to a Nordic noir thriller, and there certainly is a detective story at play as the factory director’s wife Helena sets out to solve the mystery, but this stylish period drama is also concerned with very contemporary issues of gender and s*xuality, which it probes against the flawed dreams and ideology of rising fascism and increased industrialisation. Helena’s investigation runs in parallel with her own pregnancy, her inquisitiveness putting her in great danger as she links the body to a political cover up with implications for the whole community.
With a compelling lead performance and ravishing cinematography, this engrossing, thought provoking historical drama holds a mirror to current hot button issues.

The Dog Thief
Vinko Tomicic
Martin is an orphan who lives in foster care and scratches a living shining shoes on the streets of Bolivian capital La Paz. After befriending a lonely tailor who he believes to be his father, he steals his dog, initially as a money-making scheme, but it increasingly becomes a way of getting to know him.
The De Sica references speak volumes about first time director Vinko Tomičić Salinas’ intentions, and he certainly captures the Italian master’s neo-realist style and compassion for impoverished communities. Touching performances reveal a pair of characters who are missing a family connection – the tailor’s German Shepherd being the nearest thing he has to a child, with Martin, who faces little chance of being adopted at his age, filling the gap when the dog goes missing. There’s also some good canine acting, and the city of La Paz becomes a character in its own right, Salinas’ camera finding beauty in its scrap yards, hillside shanties and crumbling street corners.
Best Film Shortlist 2/5
Yurt
Nehir Tuna
Set in the 1990s, Nehir Tuna’s impressive debut feature follows Ahmet, a 14-year-old from a privileged background, who is placed in a strict Islamic dormitory, a “Yurt”, to learn Muslim values. Ahmet’s sophisticated manners and attire alienate him from his peers, leading to tensions. However, his encounter with Hakan, a savvy street kid, becomes transformative. Together, they navigate the harsh environment of the dormitory, challenging its rigid masculinity and finding joy and friendship outside its walls.
Tuna’s confident direction turns the boys’ spiritual journey into a metaphor for modern Turkey at the crossroads of east and west. Florent Hery’s stylish black-and-white cinematography, plus a selective classical and folkloric score and Tuna’s confident direction enrich the film with recalls youth classics such as The 400 Blows and Pixote.

My Wonderful Stranger
Johanna Pyyko
Ebba, a lonely 18-year-old who is looking after a luxurious house for a couple while they are on holiday, encounters a wounded Bulgarian man at Oslo harbour. Upon learning that he is suffering from amnesia, she convinces him that they are lovers and brings him into her fantasy laden life. As he begins to regain his memory and dark facts about his past life emerge, the tables begin to turn.
Moodily shot and featuring a superb breakthrough performance from Camilla Godø Krohn, this enigmatic game of cat and mouse unfolds in deeply satisfying as it twists and turns, as the boundaries between imagination, delusion and deceit begin to blur.
