Young artists from Chester shortlisted for international prize TWO young artists from Chester have been shortlisted for a prestigious international prize.

The SAF GLOBAL Students Prize has just launched, which will see 18 artworks by students from Gibraltar, Guernsey, Chester, Hong Kong, Isle of Man, London, Malta and Gozo, Portugal and Mauritius, united in an online exhibition. These finalists were previously named winners in their respective regions during 2023. Among the talented young artists vying for the title of ‘Global’ winner are the winners from The Chester Students Prize – Emily Peacock of Sir John Deane's Sixth Form College and Emma Powell of Tarporley High School and Sixth Form College.

Winners of first ever Sovereign Art Foundation Students Prize Chester announced A PRESTIGIOUS art foundation presented its first Chester Prize at an awards ceremony on Wednesday, November 22.

We were thrilled to host the inaugural SAF Students Prize Chester 2023 Awards Ceremony tonight.

Our congratulations to Emily Peacock, Judge’s Prize Winner of the SAF Students Prize, Chester 2023 with her painting, 'The Blue Bridge'. Emily wins £800 and £2,000 for her school art department at Sir John Deane's Sixth Form College. Emily’s teacher Simon Davies collected their cheque on behalf of the school.

Emily said: “I completed this piece as part of my first year Art A-level and it features Hartley Bridge, which I cross regularly. I was drawn to all the clean lines and angles it has. Lots of people have asked if it is a photograph and are surprised it is a painting. Simon said “Emily is one of those students who has that magic spark” and he described the painstaking work she put into this piece, painting each rivet and its shadow.

We also congratulate The Public Vote Prize winner Emma Powell, who won with ‘Watching Autumn'. Emma received £400 and £1,000 for her school art department at Tarporley High School and Sixth Form College. Emma's Art Teacher, James Bowland was delighted to attend and collect their prize money on behalf of his school.

The Ceremony was presented by Stuart Stobie, MD of Sovereign Corporate & Trustee Services (SCATS). Judge Jim Wheat Dollarsandart presented the Judge’s Prize Winner, advising that “creativity takes courage…everyone is an artist whatever your age”. SCATS Director, Josephine Rocca presented the Public Vote Prize Winner.

SCATS also awarded a special commendation of £250 to Samuele Giavedoni, for his painting Lisa which also scored very highly.

Congratulations to all of the finalists on making the shortlist. The exhibition at Chester Cathedral closes tomorrow, .

Please go and see it and support this brilliant display of the 20 student artists aged 11-18, who were shortlisted. Congratulations to all for being in the shortlist.

The student’s work is on display from today until 27 November at Chester Cathedral, opening hours: Monday to Friday 9am – 6pm.

This annual award celebrates the talent and quality of artworks of secondary school art students (aged 11-18) and highlights the importance of art in the education system and rewards secondary school art programmes for nurturing this talent.

As the 11th jurisdiction to join SAF’s Students Prizes portfolio, students from Chester and Cheshire West are invited to enter their artworks for the first time and stand the chance to win over £4,000 in cash prizes. Entry is free and each student can enter 3 pieces.
