When we hold our breath, the urge to breathe comes from the need to offload carbon dioxide (CO2), not a lack of oxygen! 😮

Our bodies need oxygen for various processes, including energy production 🏃‍♂️

When we create energy, we produce CO2 as a byproduct. To maintain a healthy balance, we need to offload this CO2 by exhaling 🌬️

When we hold our breath, CO2 levels rise in our bloodstream, creating the urge to breathe. Surprisingly, we often still have enough oxygen in our system at this point. It's the buildup of CO2 that triggers the sensation of needing to breathe 🤯

However, we don't want to get rid of too much CO2! This is where the Bohr Effect comes into play. The Bohr Effect states that when CO2 levels are too low, our body struggles to deliver oxygen to our muscles and tissues ⚖️

In other words, we need a certain amount of CO2 to ensure optimal oxygenation of our bodies 🌟

Intrigued? Stay tuned for my next post, where I'll share how to check your CO2 tolerance and what it means for your overall health and well-being! 📊 You don't want to miss it!

Are you tired of living with shoulder pain? You don't have to suffer through it or give up your favorite activities! Medication alone won't solve the problem, and you don't have to give up your active lifestyle to find relief. In this reel, I'm sharing the two tests I use to assess shoulder flexibility and mobility. Why do I focus on shoulder flexion and abduction? Because these movements are crucial for many activities, from reaching for objects to throwing a ball. By identifying any limitations or weaknesses in these areas, I can create a individualised plan to to address them. Don't let shoulder pain keep you from living your best life. Do you experience low back, hip, knee pain, or plantar fasciitis? Did you know that limited ankle range of motion could be the underlying cause of your discomfort? As the foundation for most human movement, the ankle plays a crucial role in how our bodies function. If the ankle isn't functioning correctly, it can cause other areas of the body to compensate, leading to pain and injury. That's why I screen ankle dorsiflexion (pulling your toes towards your shin) and plantarflexion (pointing toes down) for all my clients who are experiencing these issues. By assessing the range of motion and identifying any limitations, I can develop an individualised program tailored to your needs, symptoms, and goals. Don't let pain hold you back from living your best life. Let's work together to improve your ankle mobility and address the root cause of your discomfort. Completing a movement screen like this gives me insight into flexibility and mobility through 9 assessments. What did I learn from my screen? 1️⃣ Standing Lumbar Pelvic Flexion (SLPF) - Limited, more so than my previous screen. This affects my body hinging effectively. I also felt sensation in my calf which is a sign of sciatic nerve pressure. 2️⃣ Kneeling Butt to Heel (KB2H) - Lacking knee flexion and ankle plantar flexion. I'll need to reduce my squat depth (e.g. box squats) and any jumping movements. 3️⃣ Ankle Dorsiflexion - My left ankle was limited and felt in my calf muscle. It means to complete certain movements having my heels elevated would be beneficial. 4️⃣ Prone Heel to Butt - Shows relationship between knee flexion and hip extension which affects running. This shows my quads need work - hello eccentric Bulgarian Split Squats 🥵 I also have a pelvis shift which is due to my body compensating for the limitations! 5️⃣ Supine Hip Flexion - I tried 3 'slots' and for me slot 2 was the most comfortable so I can replicate this in squats. It also shows how my hips wouldn't affect squat depth and why a full assessment is important! 6️⃣ Shoulder Abduction - Full. If limited it would affect lifting overhead and to use an alternative such as Landmine Pressing. 7️⃣ Wenis - Limited. I would want to see a noticeable gap while keeping elbows together. This affects front rack and also throwing movements. 8️⃣ Shoulder Flexion - Full. This would show whether your Lats were causing the issue of your thoracic spine. 9️⃣ Wrist Extension - I struggled to put weight through my left side due to my injured finger. Seemed limited from my own observations. This would again affect front rack but also anything flat palmed. As you can see I carried out the test on myself. There is a good better and best to this. Good is by yourself. Better is having someone help you complete the test under guidance. Best is having a professional comp
