Our head gardener Emma spotted these brightly coloured caterpillars today - the offspring of the mullein moth. The nocturnal moth is brown in colour, often looking like dead plant material, which is perfect for camouflage. By contrast their caterpillars have bright yellow and black spots. Verbascum (or mullein) are their favourite food but they also like buddleias. Have you seen any in your garden? We spotted this clever red-tailed mason bee (Osmia bicolor) making a little nest in our vegetable beds. They also like to set up homes in empty snail shells.
