Kinmokusei 「金木犀」Golden Osmanthus tree. Synonymous with autumn in Japan since the Edo period (1603-1868), the dainty tangerine coloured blooms upon these trees give off their beautifully fresh and lightly sweet fragrance throughout towns and cities gently, ushering all sentient beings into the coming cooler months.

Furano is a city in Japan’s Hokkaido prefecture noted for its lavender fields, such as Farm Tomita, with views of Mount Tokachi. Besides lavender, poppies, lilies and sunflowers also grow in the Nakafurano 「中富良野町」 (Furano Town) area.
Furano’s famous lavender is used in all sorts of foods, perfumes, soaps and other products – even ice cream! Personally, I recommend the lavender shortbread cookies. If you ever visit Hokkaido during the summer, see if you can find some!

The art of Kintsugi 「金継ぎ」(join with gold) is part of the Zen aesthetic, where broken pieces of an accidentally broken cup is carefully reassembled then joined with lacquer and gold powder. The point is to repair the item to be beautiful and strong. The precious veins of gold are there to emphasise that the breaks have a philosophically rich merit all of their own. This fragrance is to honour that sentiment, which kintsugi carries with it.

The Japanese concept of Ikigai 「生き甲斐」(reason for being) may be found in the physical, mental or spiritual aspects of life. It may be found singularly or in multiples. A person’s Ikigai can be found in many forms, truly depending on each individual. The earliest use of this term dates back to the Heian period (794-115) This candle represents the cultivation of such a complex concept within ourselves.
