SEAir Retractable 2 Foil System is designed to enable a boat equipped with one engine to develop lift and foil. The two main ‘hydrofoils’ are installed near the centre of the vessel and can be designed to retract inside the console. The shape of the foils is designed to be very close to the tube when retracted. A third hydrofoil is fixed on the engine.

This patented SEAir concept enables beaching, docking and trailer towing without damage to the foils. Hydrofoil design is crucial to the success of getting a boat airborne and keeping it flying safely in a range of sea conditions. SEAir design team expertise provides optimal sizing of the foils, along with the profile and structure.

SEAir foiling systems are designed to be safe and predictable. By using engine trim the boat driver optimises fore and aft stability of the boat.

As each boat is unique no foiling system is ‘plug and play’. If a boat builder wants to add foils onto an existing boat, a study is required to define structure reinforcements and depending on the centre of gravity the optimum location of main hydrofoils.

SEAir foiling system design service utilises many years of expertise in foiling power boats and sailing yachts. In partnership with boat builders, SEAir can assist with alterations to existing boats or contribute to the design of new foiling boats from 7 metre to over 30 metre.

20/05/2021

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch has published an interim report on the fatal collision between a high speed passenger RIB and a navigation buoy on Southampton Water, UK.

On 22 August 2020 at 1011, the commercially operated Seadogz RIB collided with the North-West Netley buoy at a speed of 38.4 knots. A 15 year-old girl was fatally injured when she was thrown against the handrail in front of her seat.

On board was the skipper and 11 passengers. During the collision two passengers were ejected overboard into the water where their lifejackets inflated. The remaining passengers and the skipper suffered varying degrees of impact injuries.

URGENT SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS:

The skipper was operating single-handedly, at high speed and did not see the navigation buoy, which was directly ahead for 10 seconds before impact.

During the trip the passengers became accustomed to passing close by large navigation buoys at speed and were therefore unconcerned at the crafts approach to the buoy and did not attempt to alert the skipper.

High speed figure of eight turns completed during the trip, increased the risk of hooking or spinning out.

Foil Surfer in Action at Bournemouth Pier UK 27/04/2021

AMAZING Foil Surfing – Going Against The Waves!!

He has NO BATTERY and NO MOTOR - just human energy and superb balance.

Early morning - looking west from Bournemouth Pier towards Poole Harbour. Foil surfer is catching waves - heading NORTH towards the beach. Then carving 180 degrees and pumping back out to sea - heading SOUTH towards France!

A hydrofoil is a long, hydrodynamically designed fin with wings. A hydrofoil works like an airplane wing and needs speed to create lift. Foils have redefined what we consider to be a rideable wave.

The initial ‘speed’ in this video is created by the surfer paddling and catching the first small wave. The pumping technique allows the rider to generate energy mechanically by using their own body movements.

Foils are now coming to power boats. To find out how to foils can be used to reduce fuel consumption and improve comfort see RIB & HSC iFocus Spotlight on SEAir https://bit.ly/3lH1eQ8
